Dear Catherine, You mentioned in an earlier letter that there were Jewish people living in Windsor, Berkshire, in the early 19th century. I remember our family had a cousin called "Cousin Adel" whose name was Adelaide AlEXANDER and who ran a jewellery shop at 4 the High Street , Eton, where all the Eton school boys and their parents used to come to buy watches and jewellery. She inherited this from her father Nehemiah Job ( 1851/61/71/census)but I wondered why they chose such a small place and didn't come to live in London. Her mother Rosa was born in Whitechapel but I cannot find her marriage to Nehemiah. Does anyone know anything about this family or if there was a formal community in Eton/Windsor.? I only know that Nehemia died in 1890 and he had three sons besides his daughter Adel. they were Alfred, George and Joseph .Joseph died in 1877 . I wonder if anyone in America or Australia is researching them .These countries were mentioned in Joseph's Jewish chronicle death announcement with the names given in Hebrew and English Incidentally, bridging this gap , I remember going with my grandmother and Great Aunts Lizzie and Rachel Hart to visit Adele at the back of her shop which ran down to the river. I must have been tiny as they were worried about my falling into the river! With best wishes, Louise in London, I knew that Adel and the Aunts were friends but don't know if they were real cousins or just courtesy cousins.
I do have an ALEXANDER in my database, who lived in Eton in the early 19th century, but no mention of any "Cousin Adel". Any connection? I don't know. Barnet ALEXANDER (1754-1824), son of Alexander ALEXANDER, moved from Kidderminster to Eton in 1796, where he assumed the name LEVY. He was a clockmaker to King George III, by whom he was apparently personally known. Maybe that's the Windsor-Eton connection, and the rationale for the jewellery shop. He had married Rosetta ISAACS in 1795, and in time they had four sons (Alexander, Michael, Henry and Barnett). I do not have any record of any of their children continuing to live in Eton as adults, but that doesn't necessarily mean that they didn't. The son Barnett ALEXANDER/LEVY further confused the issue by assuming the name Barnett LEE. Born in Eton on 6 December 1804, he moved to London sometime before 2 October 1836, on which date he married Diamond-Diamante FOLIGNO at the Western Synagogue in London. He was a court tailor trading at 39 Duke Street, St. James's. He is said to have remembered being presented as a very young child to King George III, whom he met with his father at Windsor Castle. He remembered the king calling him a pretty boy. Barnett LEE died in London on 11 August 1877. Barnett and Diamond had five children, and named their elder daughter Rosetta, after her paternal grandmother. Anne Joseph Montreal, Canada.
