First I want to thank everybody for there time and effort in looking up records for me, you have come up trumps again. Thought I would quickly share my discoveries to date. Leah SCHNEIDERS married Michael JACOBS 1873, London (lost at that point). FOUND, By late 1873 they had travelled to Melbourne, Victoria. Michael had by then added Alfred to his name. There was no mention of the name Alfred on birth Index, English Marriage certificate or Hebrew translation. He went on to have 3 children, 2 surviving in Melbourne. Then I found him and Leah on the National Archives site, she divorcing him for all manner of things, icluding one which he was imprisoned for a month for a bigamous marriage. He "married" in 1880 before the divorce under the name Alfred Jacobs, the Judge was confident this was the same person as Michael Jacobs to convict him, can't find a copy yet of the trial. By 1891 Leah is back to her maiden name SCNEIDERS/SNIDERS and the children are also known by that name, although her daughter married under her birth name of JACOBS. Lost Michael/Alfred again, don't know if he made a new life with his partner, married her legally, or did she dump him. Still looking but not sure for what name! Again thanks for your patience and help Debbie Bozkurt Outer Hebrides - Wet and Windy again!
Debbie Don't know if this will help but I found 1888 divorce documents for a relative in the Supreme Court archives of Sydney. It was a gold mine - letters from family, detailed affidavits and even a photo of the bride one Marie KEYZOR nee JOSEPH, daughter of Alfred JOSEPH of London then Sydney. By proving I was related, even though distantly, I was able to get copies of everything. If they divorced in Melbourne there should be something similar. If you can find more details I would be happy to look them up if they are in Melbourne.
