    3. You don't have to pay $100. I did, but my year has run out and I can't renew this minute. So Debbie is correct, you can log in and have a search, but only for one thing at a time--you can't search for Solomon of Back Church Lane, you can search for Solomon or Solomons under surname, BUT, here's the trick. If you have a street, or even a variation of it, change the search. Don't do "surname" do "any field" and then choose "sounds like" or "is exactly" and...have fun. Once I knew "Manuel Solomons" was at 76 Cable Street, I wanted to see who else was at their address. I did a search for "any field" "is exactly" "Cable" and saw who his neighbors were up and down the street. Voila, it appeared his son worked a few doors down at 51 Cable. So I narrowed it down and searched for exactly 76 Cable and exactly 51 Cable to see who their landlords, co-workers, etc might have been. One of the neighbors, Michael Michael ( I then did more searches on some of the neighbors) lived on 9 Church Lane in 1819 (where my Solomons lived later). He also may have been the Michael Michael of Cable Street who was tried at the Old Bailey at age 26 in 1802 for coining--he was found guilty, and was sentenced to death, which was "respited." Reading the trial record told me a little about daily work life on Cable Street. Other people at 76 Cable Street were the Lazarus family over a several decade long period--Lewis Lazarus from 1819-22, Samuel Lazarus at 62 Cable Street in 1836. The Barnetts--Emanuel Barnett, 1749, Barnett Barnett (aka Barnard) Mazchor 1807, Emanuel Barnett (possibly the grandson of the 1749 one) through the 1830's--and then by 1853 David Barnett of 12 Back Church Lane--when my family lived at several addresses on the street. Once you know someone is at a street, go to search records of the Old Bailey and do a map search for the street. It usually will give you an idea of the neighborhood, how many crimes over the years, insights into the physical setting via the trials, which you can click on on the map--you can go to the years your family was there up to 1834 and realize you're listening to their neighbors, if not your ancestors themselves (my Emanuel Solomon, circa 1819, witness to a crime--I also searched under "Manuel" to see if he was ever listed that way, no luck). Lucky for me, Cable Street had a lot of crime, mostly theft. It was near the London Docks, so I got a sense of the businesses and the traffic--drunk sailors who woke up minus a pocketwatch, etc. A stolen handkerchief that ended up getting on transported for life... And consider searching on Jewish Gen under names of each directory--I did a search under "any field" "Is exactly" "AlexRit" which gave me all the subscribers to a book of Hebrew rituals circa 1819. Somebody went door to door selling subscriptions to this, so names turn up close enough to each other that you can see some patterns. Then I did a search of "Britten" which was clock and watchmakers...looking for Jacob/John Levy, watch and clockmaker--still sorting out the few John and Jacobs and Jonahs...but it's helpful in locating them and ruling out this or that one--the one at 12 and 13 Bevis Marks lived into the 1840's, so I can rule him out...etc. (The pot roast was great--weeks o' frozen leftovers to come!) 3. OK, I just tried to log in to JewishGen and observed a couple of things. You do have to long in, I think. You should not have to pay anything just to create a log in--I searched for years without ever making a donation (slob that I am). When you do your search, "surname" can be either "sounds like " or "is exactly." If your ancestor has a common name, yes, it can be a bit of a slog but ... When you search "any field" it's exactly whatever you type in. Err on the side of brief--Angel instead of Angel Court. Because it might have also been Angel Alley and you don't want to rule anything out yet. > Carolyn Hahn, NYC >> Searching for SOLOMON/S of St George in the East, Levy of Holywell St >> or Cannon St Rd. >> >> Debbie Bozkurt wrote: >>> No you only have to pay $100 if you want to do an advanced search, you >>> can still type a surname in but not a combination of Surname, place >>> etc. justs means if you have a common surname it takes a while >>> >>> Debbie Bozkurt - Outer Hebrides >>> >>> On Jan 20, 2008 10:25 AM, Alfred and Louise >>> <alfredlouise@btinternet.com> wrote: >>> >>>> I have tried to log into Jewish Gen's london database but they >>>> seem to want >>>> $100.
