At least three and possibly four of my great grandparents came from Suwalki Gubernia, which was in Poland until 1918 when part of it was ceded to Lithuania (the part round Mariampole, Kalvaria and Vistytis). Names do indeed change and up to 1866 this Gubernia was called Augustow gubernia. Suwalki and Augustow were the two main towns in the area, and remained in Poland after 1918. British census and naturalisation records record use of both Suwalki and Augustow (three out of four great grandparents came over in the 1860s and the 4th in the 1870s), whilst records obtained from Suwalki records office showed one branch of the family came from Dalny Las on Lake Serwy near Augustow (shown in 1881 census as Augustow, and naturalisation record as Suwalki). Because Suwalki area was so close to Konigsberg (New East Prussia) and the Baltic, this afforded an easier escape route and many people from the area came to UK and US relatively early (pre 1880 rush). This is all rather similar to me telling people I live in Sutton/Surrey/England/UK (take your pick) when I go abroad.
