Hi to everyone over there, Does anyone who is researching the WOOLFfamily( WOLFF in 1871 census) have any of these names in their tree: HYMAN WOOLF wife BETSEY (nee Borwitz?) in the 1870's or before? Came from Belarus to London with children: JACOB, FRIEDA, HILLEL, RACHEL. CHANA born about 1871 in Whitechapel, 'INKHORN COURT', TOBIAS born 1873, address 2 ROSE ALLEY, in the Bishopsgate area.? Then went to Dunedin New Zealand, presumably with whole family SON NAFTALI BORN IN DUNEDIN APROX 1875 ' DIED IN MELBOURNE AUSTRALIA AROUND 1876 HYMAN was a GLAZIER by trade , BORN ABOUT 1830, parents YUDEL AND FANNY, movements of parents unknown HYMAN DIED AROUND 1880 IN MELBOURNE BETSEY DIED IN ABOUT 1890 IN MELBOURNE If jewish people who migrated around the 1870's came via the Whitechapel route, were they registered as Aliens or any similar designation?? I believe that your National Archives will be releasing digitised copies of Denizations and Alien registrations later this year. I will be in London later this year. In addition to trying this source, are there any records kept from this time that would indicate the original family name that was obviously altered upon their arrival in London by whichever authorities? Were name changes made in an ad hoc manner or formally recorded for all those entering the country at this time?? Does the address Inkhorn court have any significance re new arrivals at this time. It no longer exists. Did your Jewish Board of Guardians keep any records at this time?? Any assistance would be welcomed. thanks again Esther Kahn Melbourne Australia _________________________________________________________________ Are you paid what you're worth?
