Today I had occasion to visit Mile End Hospital and had to park some distance away down Bancroft Road. I was struck by the appearance of a burial ground as I was walking from my car to the Hospital. It appeared to be a Jewish graveyard as what stones there were had what appeared to be Hebrew inscriptions. But the site was in a state of terrible dereliction - most of the stones were shattered and strewn around like so much rubble. From what I could make out the stones were dated around the early 19th Century and the dead were presumably by now sufficiently remote from the living to allow the neglect to the monuments to occur. It struck me as incredibly sad that the burial ground was in this state - I was intrigued to see that Tower Hamlets Council had pinned a notice to the railings asking the owner of the ground to contact them! Does anyone know about this burial ground and its history? Ros
