    3. Hi Stephen, Lilac Terrace most certainly did exist. It ran off Regent St (at 111 Regent St). http://www.leodis.net/ has photos of Lilac Terrace amongst which is this one http://www.leodis.net/display.aspx?resourceIdentifier=2002424_6052798 which might save an unsuccessful day trudging round Leeds looking for a street that no longer exists. If it is any consolation, if it had survived as a street it would not have looked as it did then! If I can be of further help, I have a database for Leeds but with a name like LEVI/LEVY I need a DOB and parents' names and DOBS for find the right Rachel, email me back. Best wishes Sherry (23170, Viersat) There is some confusion over the grandmothers name- Rachel Annie Levy (or Levi, the spelling is unclear) but the family is clear that she lived at 28 or 33 Lilac Terrace, Leeds. I've tried to find this Lilac Terrace on modern maps, but according to GoogleMaps, Streetmap and the Royal Mail, no such place as Lilac terrace exists any more. It appears in historical records (such as the 1901 census) as being part of the Central Ward of leeds, in the Sheepscar, St. Luke parish of the city. I suspect its either a local name for a terrace on a better known street, or one that has been demolished or renamed over the years. While the grandmother has passed, my friend (her grand daughter) would very much like to visit Lilac Terrace (if it still exist) and photograph it for her elderly father. If anyone in the Leeds community has the local knowledge to guide her that area, both the family and I would be very grateful.

    1. [BRITISH-JEWRY] Worms in Birmingham

    3. Hi all. I have been aware for some time of a story that suggested that 3 Worms brothers migrated from Germany to England around the 1790 period. I feel pretty confident that I have located two of the brothers Hyam aka Henry, and Aaron Worms in London . However I have recently started looking for the possible 3rd brother, and the name that keeps popping up is Lewis Worms who was based in the northern city of Birmingham. Although the name Lewis is one that repeats in both Hyams and Aaron's descendants, & the surname Worms (relatively unusual in itself) ,combined with the fact that this Lewis was born in Germany (as were the other two) in the right time frame, would seem to suggest a link, the fact that he was based in Birmingham seemed to negate (in my mind) a familial connection. However, since this is the only chap that seems to be remotely possible, I was wondering if anyone had any knowledge of this Lewis?? His daughters married men with very Jewish immigrant sounding surnames, so I suspect that Lewis and his children remained faithful to the Jewish faith. I was surprised to see though that this Lewis had actually married in London to a London girl and believe that the following is their marriage entry in the Great Synagogue London ' 29 April 1823 Layman WORMS Asher Lemly s of Abraham married Ann ABRAHAMS Shprintsa d of Yehuda Leib' GSM 217/29 I am no expert on theses entries but the two other Worms grooms are listed 20 years earlier as "Hyam s of Leib Cohen (ttl)' and Aharon s of Yehuda Cohen (maven - title - Priv'd Member), which don't seem to me to marry up with the Lewis Worms entry. Any information regarding the Birmingham Lewis Worms would be really welcomed, as well as any input regarding the wedding entries Regards Lesley Champion Melbourne, Australia
