Hi everyone out there, just wondering whether anyone has any familial links to these families, or has noticed them in their trees etc? Hyman WOOLF ( Chaim Zalman ben Yehuda) and His wife Betsey (Borvitz) (Bayla bat Nachum) resided in Whitechapel in the 1870's with a number of children. (WOLFF 1871 CENSUS) >From BDM documents here in Melbourne, they appear to have come form Riga, Courland Gubenia or possibly Golding, all within the Latvian area, but at that time confused for Russian Poland. Their eldest daughter Freida , anglisized (Fayda Yehudit) married Samuel Barnett Jacobson ( Shmuel ben Myer) at the Great synagogue in London in dec 1875. His father is shown as Myer and mother shown here on BDM as Pauline, obviously anglisized. Father unknown. Hyman and Betsey emigrated here in the late 1870's to Melbourne via it appears Dunedin New Zealand where a child was born and died here in 1877. Hyman and Betsey died in 1882 and 1891 respectively. Fanny and Samuel had many children, Myer being born in London in 1876. Alexander may also have been born in London . Other children, Raie, Rachel, Pauline, Annie. Fanny and Samuel arrived here in about 1882. Fanny died in 1919 and Samuel in 1962. I have just recently visited their stone which is still readable , in the Brighton cemetery. Documents obtained here indicate Myer Jacobson being a manufacturer , it appears caps . Myer married Lilly Aarons from Leeds in 1903. They also had many children. Lilly died in 1950 and Myer in 1962. I have connected with a desendant in Western Australia , via ancestry.com and she has verified information about this part of her tree. Yiddish was spoken and my grandfather Tobias WOOLF was the son of Hyman and Betsey. D-M soundex methods seem to indicate that the original surnames would have been close to the anglisized versions, with Jacobson probably being JACOBOVITZ. Betsey's maiden name appears to be part of this name, so the may have been a connection between the families having come form the same shtel or nearby. Many of the causes of death appear to be cardiac and hypertensive in origin, with some strokes as well....definitely a family trait. Does this jog anyone's memory??? Any assistance would be welcome. I will be in London in october. thanks again Esther Kahn nee WOOLF Melbourne Australia researching lewkowicz/czestochowa poland woolf/ jacobson/riga.courland/golding/latvia /london/melbourne // altman/czestochowa/dzialosyn majerowicz/kamyk/nowa wies/czestochowa /
