Hi, Ann--glad you found something! People were respited for a veriety of reasons. A woman sentenced to death could "plead her belly" and be respited till the child was born--you can def. research the punishments given and how often they were really carried out (there wasn't much mercy!). But that was in the pre-1830's records, where many people were sentenced to death or transported for life for minor crimes. It will be interesting to see how much respiting went on later...
