Dear BJ Genners, Ann Jensen wrote: I wonder if the fact that he went through Ellis Island indicates he had immigrated or taken out citizenship and where do I look for the records? This would seem to indicate some misunderstanding about Ellis Island. The fact is that Ellis Island seems to have a sense of mystique surrounding it, whereas it was simply the name of the Port of New York and the official place of arrival for all inbound passengers who weren't traveling first or second class. Everyone else had to "check in" here first, even if they were returning U.S. citizens. People departing from the Port of New York did so by leaving on a ship from one of the piers on (usually) the west side of lower Manhattan. If you wish to search for citizenship records, then it depends on when and where he was living. As Carol Freeman asks, have you looked at the various U.S. censuses? These usually ask whether one has naturalized or not, and some censuses even ask for the year of naturalization. The LDS has microfilmed the indices to naturalization and in some instances has also microfilmed the records. The records consist of a two-step process, this by the way being the post-1906 federal government process. A person intending to naturalize would first fill out a Declaration of Intention. This could be done as soon as the person sets foot on U.S. soil. However he has to live here continuously for five years before he can then fill out a Petition for Naturalization. Once this has been checked and approved (and presumably he has been checked out) he will then swear and oath of allegiance (as I did in 2001). Your Manny Warner may well have been "going home" but this should not be construed as being indicative of his naturalization status. As others on this list have suggested, it seems like you still have some homework to do.
