We have been searching for ages for our GGGranmothers Maiden name. As someone already asked you a similar question and the answer was to order a childs Birth Certificate, but the child was born in Gibraltar and we haven't been able to find necessary numbers to order Cert. My GGG's name was SALOME and left several cyrilic language books when she died. We wondered if she had been born Jewish, she spoke German at home. She married ( not sure where) her husband, WILLIAM GEORGE MORTON was stationed in Gibraltar in the Army and their daughter ELIZA was born there in 1848. They went back to the UK and SALOME died in Briton Ferry and was buried in NEATH Glamorganshire, in 1851. Forgive me if this is a too awkward request but we have to try everything, don't we? With Thanks from Sheila Dixon in New South Wales Australia.
Are you saying that you are looking for the maiden name of Salome, mother of Eliza MORTON, born abt 1848, in Gibraltar? If so, Eliza's birth certificate should give that information. The birth certificate will be registered under the appendices to the GRO Index. Beyond the England and Wales returns there are other returns for things like consular and army events. If William MORTON was in the British army at the time of Eliza's birth he would have had to have registered the birth with the army. Try somewhere that holds the normal GRO Index on film/fiche. Certificates must be ordered centrally from ONS in Southport, as there are no locally held copies of entries. The other thing to try is William's army records which should be available from The National Archives at Kew. It should state the date and place of marriage and the births of any children... best, Sherry On 17/04/2008, Sheila Dixon <sdi39142@bigpond.net.au> wrote: > We have been searching for ages for our GGGranmothers Maiden name.
