    3. Hi Susan Yes it was me. And yes, it was down to the usual multitude of names! Marie was known as Marie or Martha SIMONS JACOBS or SYMONDS JACOBS. She was the daughter of Saul SYMONDS (SIMONS) and Hannah (Henrietta) ELKAN. It took me ages to discover where the JACOBS part came from. With the help of Pat Simons (not sure if she is a BJ lister), I found that my gg-gf Saul was the son of Moses JACOBS and Bluma SIMONS. Some of the family used the name JACOBS, some SIMONS and some SIMONS JACOBS. To complicate matters, Saul changed his family name to SYMONDS during the 1880s. If you look at the GRO indexes for the 1840s-1880s, there are numerous entries for "SIMONS JACOBS" and spelling variations. Marie's siblings were as follows: Sara SYMONDS JACOBS - married Maurice Julius HENOCHSBERG Flora SIMONS JACOBS (SYMONDS) - my g-grandmother - married Mendel HYAMS Godfrey JACOBS (SYMONDS/SIMMONDS) Morris/Maurice SIMONS (SYMONDS) Kate SIMONS JACOBS (SYMONDS JACOBS) - married David MORRIS Elkan SIMONS (SYMONDS) - married Annie Ososki Hope that clarifies matters! Jill <I was able to explain the 6 ½ gap between marriage and the birth of their 1st child. (Conjugal rights were not part the prison system at that time). What I cannot remember is whether we discussed why JC referred to the bride’s family as Symonds. According to the GRO, her name was Marie Martha S Jacobs. Was this a 2nd marriage? Or just the usual multitudes of names sent to try us?.
