At last year's "Who do you think you are?" Exhibition at Olympia, the JGSGB was approached by a local authority councillor from the London Borough of Wandsworth, Rex Osborn. He wanted information on the Salvador family who were Portuguese Jews who lived in Tooting and then Twickenham in the 18th century. Beverley Bergman, myself and Martin Nicholson from the SW London JGS, were able to find a fair bit about this family, one member of whom became a prominent American in Georgia. However, he made his money from a sugar plantation, which inevitably involved slavery. Having recently come back from a conference in Liverpool - and taken the opportunity to visit the Liverpool Maritime Museum at Albert Dock (excellent for those who had ancestors who went to USA from UK) - it is clear you cannot get away from slavery in 18th century. Much of Liverpool (and Bristol) were built on its proceeds. It does not mean we should condone it, but in 18th century people viewed things differently unfortunately. It is clear wealthy Spanish and Portuguese Jews were involved in this trade. I have searched on the internet and much of the information I have found is for jews involved in the Slave trade, but I need more than just this. Does anyone know if anything detailed has been published in this field? David Alexander Puycelsi France
