I have had difficulty tracing a Ph[o]ebe LAZARUS who, I believe, was a sister of my gr gr grandfather. According to FreeBMD, she was born in the Dec. quarter of 1841 in Plymouth, Devon. She later turns up in the 1861 census for Toronto, Canada, with members of her family and that's the last I have seen of her. The rest of the family went to the States but she doesn't appear with them there nor have I found her back in England, whence the rest of them returned. She may have got married in Canada, but doesn't appear in the list of Ontario Marriages. I think she may have died c. 1870 (thereby missing 1870/1 censuses) as her brother names a daughter of his Ethel Phoebe in 1873. What puzzles me particularly is that I can't find her in the 1851 census for Plymouth with her mother and her siblings. Can anyone else find her ? Eve Richardson (in Toronto, wondering if if we are going to have fog, rain, sun icy pellets or snow today)
My memory and my filing system have let me down. Someone on the list (Jill maybe) was interested in the following - Jewish Chronicle November 6, 1885 Daniel Jacoby son of the late Sigmund Jacoby .at North London Synagogue .to Marie Symonds, youngest daughter of Saul Symonds, 252 Pentonville Rd. I was able to explain the 6 ½ gap between marriage and the birth of their 1st child. (Conjugal rights were not part the prison system at that time). What I cannot remember is whether we discussed why JC referred to the brides family as Symonds. According to the GRO, her name was Marie Martha S Jacobs. Was this a 2nd marriage? Or just the usual multitudes of names sent to try us? Regards, Susan McPhedran Bowmanville, Ont
