Adoption records would be sealed, but there are agencies who will pass letters on. It's a question of knowing who handled the adoption, isn't it? Are you sure she was adopted and didn't end up with her mother? If you have the father's name and it's not SMITH or JONES or COHEN it would probably worth searching the BMD index, to see if the child was registered under her father's name. This would then give you the mother's maiden name and the registered name of the baby. However, quite possibly she was registered under her mother's name and then you are stuck. We did have someone on the list with extensive experience of tracing adoptive parents/children.
