    1. [BRITISH-JEWRY] Soman family - Norwich - Thanks and more thoughts...
    2. Jessica Leschnikoff
    3. Dear all, Thank you to Keira Lockyer, Linda Kelly, Michael Sayers and Sherry Landa for their help in researching the Soman family from Norwich. I had a daft thought that maybe, Soman was the anglicized way of pronouncing the French "saumon" - reason being that one of the early Soman people is said to have come here from Epinal in Vosges, France. Why would an immigrant adopt this pronounciation of the French for salmon? Why are so many of our Jewish families named Salmon eh? So, I wondered what the odds were for there being families with the name of Salmon in Vosges, and I did a search on Geneanet.org, and promptly came up with quite a number of trees with the Salmon name in them. Not only that, but it appears that the places these Salmons were living in are very closeby to Epinal - surrounding villages in fact. So probably, David Somon was from a village or town near to Epinal. Perhaps some of your could advise me further; I already have cottoned on to the link between Solomon and Salmon / Salomon, Saloman etc. It also appears that Vosges had a small community of Jewish people that was decimated by the holocaust. and there was a synagogue in Epinal - I googled synagogue and epinal to get this info. So that's where I'm at; although the Somons aren't related to me at all, except by marriage, I have maybe stumbled on a lost part of the family's history. If anyone is related to them directly and would like to get in touch, please do. Best regards, Jessica Leschnikoff - and I thought my last name was "complicated".
