Ann, Katie might have travelled alone. They had to get out of the Old Country! We've seen single 17-year old-girls traveling alone. My grandmother and her sister were 17 and 15. These folks had courage! The town was probably Stopnica, Poland. There were over 3,000 Jews there in 1900, per JewishGen.
