Hi Naomi, I am researching Abraham HENRY born 1794 "St Cathernes Middlesex". Varous research suggests this is actually St Katherines which is where St Katherines Dock now stands just by the Tower of London. I know that Abraham joined the British Army and, in 1820, while in India he re-married his wife Mary Ann xxxx. I say re-married because I have seen the wedding entry details in the British Library India Section, which read as follows: ...Abraham Henry Private 11th Dragoons and Mary Anne were married by me this 12th June 1820. H L Williams Chaplain of Cownpore. This Marriage was solomly between us Abraham Henry and Mary Anne Henry. In Presence of Elizabeth Pashley her mark X and James Ditton his mark X. xxxx xxxx the above named parties having been married according to the ritual of the Jewish Church have at their own special request been remarried by me according to our ritual having became members of our church. H L Williams 12th Jun 1820 Cownpore. On the left hand side it shows Ann as a "spinster What obviously interests me is the comment ,..."above named parties having been married according to the ritual of the Jewish Church"... . I know all their history after returning from India in about 1837.. but what I am desparately trying to find is their Jewish marriage details ..I know that this would have had to be before they sailed to India in 1819 as I have seen their names on the Ship manifest. she is listed as Mrs Mary Anne Henry. His wife came from St Martins in the Field London... a few miles from St Katherines...so I assume the wedding took place in either of their home locations. Do you have any information on this family ? Hi Paul and welcome. There are many Jews with names that can't be categorized as Jewish. Many Jews assimilated or changed their names and some had original names that don't fit into any mold. I looked at the Jewishgen Family Finder and saw a person researching the surname CONTESS. That is very close to yours.
