    3. Thanks for all your replies on this. I have now received translations. I have established that the family were not Jewish (as they talk about celebrating Christmas when reunited). The letters are touching and spend a lot of time (especially in the first one) of asking over and over why they haven't heard from Richard (the recipient) and how they have written over and over and are worried. Then in the second they repeat their joy at receiving news from Richard. The letters are from Luzia (Richar'd sister) on her behalf and that of their mother. The second letter reveals that they don't know the fate of their father/husband. It also mentions that they were in Siberia at one stage. It mentions people who have helped them-using Mrs. presumably for someone who was not a relative and first names for others (maybe relatives). They say that they have struggled but that they have everything they need and a comparatively luxurious and easy life in India compared to previously. Of course, the letters leave as many questions as they answer-such as what became of them, did they survive, did they find their father, did they remain in India or relocate? etc. The question as to why Dutch bank notes were enclosed remains. Thanks to everyone who has contributed. This thread is now closed, but feel free to email me privately if you like. Best Sherry Landa (Oxford, UK)
