    1. [BRITISH-JEWRY] London Rifle Brigade & enlistment age in 1914

    3. I had an uncle born in London Jan 1890, lived in Hackney from 1908. He went to Australia where on 17 August 1914 when he was aged 24 1/2 yrs he enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force -(infantry) He stated his age on the enlistment form as 21 yrs 4 mths. I am puzzled as to why he falsified his age, perhaps he really did not know it? As to previous service, he stated "London Rifle Brigade 3 yrs [discharged". I wonder why he had enrolled there, there was no military tradition in the family. From the web I get "The London Rifle Brigade, popularly known as the LRB, was formed as the 1st London Rifle Volunteer Corps in 1859 and within a short time consisted of fifteen companies " but I cannot find any detail about what the unit did in the period around 1910 when my uncle must have been in it. On the National Amy Museum website I cannot find any email contact to enquire. Does anyone have any information or how to find it, or I may have to consult their library. And how many Jews were in the LRB? Bryan Diamond, London
