    3. This type of handwritten reference to an entry in a later quarter was a standard method of cross-referring to a 'late' registration. You'll find it at the foot of many pages of the births index, especially during the war years. The earlier reference is abbreviated because it's a cross-reference, not an index entry in its own right. The GRO index is an index of birth *registrations*, not of births, so if a birth was registered only in 1943 you wouldn't expect to find a full entry in 1940.
