    1. [BRITISH-JEWRY] Rachel Phillips died Paddington, London, 1903
    2. Terry Newman
    3. Dear Listers My GGG grandmother, Rachel Phillips, nee Jacobs, died in Paddington, London, in 1903 aged 97. She was the widow of Simon Phillips, furrier, of Cutler St, London, who died in 1845. At least 2 sons, Asher and Morris (my GG grandfather) migrated to Australia and established families there. I would be grateful if some kind person who subscribes to the Jewish Chronicle can provide me with a copy of Rachel Phillips’ obituary notice. (JC, Oct 3, 1903). Unfortunately the notice produced from the online index to the Jewish Chronicle is unclear. With thanks. Terry Newman Sydney, Australia

    1. [BRITISH-JEWRY] Vishnick
    2. Myra & Peter Waddell
    3. I have found in the 1911 census someone I think is a cousin of mine - Max Posner. He was boarding with the Vushnick family at 39 Buross Street, Commercial road, EC1. I realise that none of the family is likely still to be alive now (despite there being several very young children in the Vishnick family) but just wondered whether, perhaps, there are children or grandchildren who might have knowledge of Max. Perhaps the Posners and Vishnicks came from the same village/town/city. I am an optimist, as you can tell but, if you don't ask, you don't get! Myra Waddell (Adelaide, South Australia). 3. I also found a Woolf Hessel Hershelowitz in the 1911 census born abt 1908. Since "G" and "H" can be interchangeable, this person could also be another possibility. His parents were Israel Wolf and Pauline. If he changed his name, it would seem that he would be buried under the "new" name. Maybe a call to the cemetery or the people overseeing it could clarify for you. 3. I found an article in the Jewish Chronicle from 2008 about Harris Woolf & Mary Gersholowitz who are buried at Edmonton. I think this is a different man. It says Mary was buried there 100 years ago. Also, there is a Harris Woolf Gersholowitz (1 year old child) in the 1911 census. His father was Lewis. 3. Just check the GRO index or the free BMD index. Both are available online. You can also check the Jewish Chronicle. 1. Re: [BRITISH-JEWRY] curious entry on English Birth Index Page
    2. Judy Lester
    3. This type of handwritten reference to an entry in a later quarter was a standard method of cross-referring to a 'late' registration. You'll find it at the foot of many pages of the births index, especially during the war years. The earlier reference is abbreviated because it's a cross-reference, not an index entry in its own right. The GRO index is an index of birth *registrations*, not of births, so if a birth was registered only in 1943 you wouldn't expect to find a full entry in 1940. 1. [BRITISH-JEWRY] curious entry on English Birth Index Page
    2. jeremy frankel
    3. Dear BJers Every once in a while I actually get the chance to do some more work on my own families. Last night I was using FreeBMD to enter some ALTMAN relatives and discovered something I've never seen before. The second quarter of 1943 listed two Altmans, both with the same mother's maiden name, but the first entry's place of registration was Carmarthen, Wales, and the second was Edmonton, London. How could this be! The FreeBMD entries alerted me to an earlier entry for 1940 for the Carmarthen birth and sure enough, at the bottom of the column was a handwritten entry which listed the full name, volume number and the note "see J43" meaning see the entry for June 1943. I am assuming this latter entry was a delayed birth entry. My point is that while I was quite comfortable seeing a delayed birth registration, I don't recall ever seeing an entry also in the right quarter/year with no registration but a note to see a delayed entry index location. Has anyone else ever come across this anomaly? From, I might add an incredibly non-storm rainy and very windy storm in Northern California Jeremy -- Jeremy G Frankel ex Edgware, London, England Berkeley and Folsom, California, USA FRENKEL: Plock, Poland; then FRANKEL: London, England GOLDRATH/GOLD: Praszka, Poland, London, England KOENIGSBERG: Vilkaviskis, Lithuania, London, England, NYC, NY, USA LEDER/LEVY: Kalisz, Poland, LEVY (later LEADER): London, England PRINCZ/PRINCE: Krakow, Austria-Hungary, London, England, NYC, NY, USA WYTWORNIK: Plock, Poland
