Thanks Martha for the posting. I checked the list out of curiosity and did find what i think is my great grandmother # 424 Annie Cohen nee Goldberg. I didn't find her husband but possibly her son Abraham Cohen # 421 and daughter Rachael # 459 or 460. What is the best way to get copies of these cards as I live in USA. What a great resource. Given the many joys of searching for people who never spelt their names the same in two consecutive documents it is possible to browse the complete list of aliens Go to advanced search. http://catalogue.wyjs.org.uk/advanced.aspx?src=CalmView.Catalog Do an any word search for WYP/LE, then click on entry "19. Thank you for this link. I looked immediately to see whether my gg grandfather Abraham/Thomas Garlick/Harris was listed (I think I found him in Manchester in the 1870 census) but he's not listed. It took me awhile to find how to access this list, so perhaps this will be helpful to others: If you go directly to http://www.catalogue.wyjs.org.uk/TreeBrowse.aspx?src=CalmView.Catalog&field=RefNo&key=WYPLE%2F19 you will see an alphabetical list of the persons in the alien files. In order to get to that page, I typed "alien files" into the search box, then clicked on "section" under "Level." Martha PS Sherry, there is an Abraham Landa! GARLICK (GRYLAK?)/HARRIS: Kalisz(?) Too soon old, too late wise - it never occurred to me to look for such files! Well, I'm not a Brit, I'm an American, so maybe I have a bit of an excues. My relatives were not in West Yorkshire (as far as I know), but maybe some kindly Brit can tell me if there are similar files available for other parts of England? Specifically, I have grandparents who were in London (not sure by what route they got to London) and had a child born there. Might I be able to find files like this, if I knew where to look? Can anyone tell me where to start looking? Hello, I've come to a bit of a dead-end. 4 of the 5 surviving TAYLOR brothers went to USA (as far as I can tell)-Children of Barnet and Jane (nee TAYLOR). One appears to have stayed in Leeds. He was still alive in 1954 when his mother died and her will was proven to him. Then it gets much more tricky. This was not a family who believed in announcing anything in the JC. I now have a possible match (plus maybe a wife) and wondered if anyone is going anywhere where they have the probate index and/or to NCVS New Farnley Cemetery in Leeds and would be able to look at the index and/or the headstone and get the information from them. It might help me prove/disprove the link. Dear Genners, Like many of you, with the continual release of new information I'm having to go back and revisit some old research. Celia WESTNOVOTE married Reuben the youngest of ten FRANKEL children. Reuben was my grandfather's brother. I became interested in the Westnovote family because they are the only ones with that name. Celia was one of twelve children of Ephraim and Fanny Westnovote; the latter eight were all born in London's east end. With so many children and obviously even more descendants, maybe one or more of you can claim a relationship to the Westnovote family. If so I would be interested in hearing from you. I would appreciate hearing from anyone who might have information about a Rev Simon Mirsky and his family. In 1928 Rev Mirsky was residing at 44 Pembury Road, London N.E.5. His second son Moshe was famous as a child prodigy cantor and became a Professor at the Guildhall School of Music. Moshe married but did not have children. I am trying to trace Rev Mirsky's other child(ren) and, hopefully, current descendants. Please respond to me direct at alancomm@netmedia.net.il Many thanks Abraham Goldberg Jerusalem
Hello again Listers, I have a marriage taking place at 21 Finsbury Square in 1856. The couple married came from Dover (bride)and Reading (groom) respectively and they made their home at Reading. The ceremony was conducted ‘according to the Rites and Ceremonies of the German and Polish Jews’ by the Chief Rabbi, Nathan Adler. (I have the brother of the groom also marrying at 21 Finsbury Square in 1859.) >From what I can gather this was the address of the London School of Jewish Studies; which had opened the previous year. The witnesses were Isaac Myers and Morris Lyons. Were they possibly students of the School? Can anyone explain why the couple would have chosen to marry there, and not at the Synagogue? Was this a cheaper option, especially if the wedding was small and not attended by many family? Or would they only be allowed to marry at their ‘home’ Synagogue? Any ideas? many thanks Cynthia (New Zealand) Researching HART, NATHAN, BARNARD, ABRAHAMS,VANDERLYN
Hello Jackye and thanks for your help and ideas which are gratefully received. Although my Elizabeth had a total of eight children, five of which are showing with her on the 1841 census, they were all born between 1820 and 1836. So, this has ruled out any chance of finding a national record. Strangely, we have been unable to find the correct death certificate for her. We have some reason to believe she died around 1843 and she does not appear on the 1851 census where her husband is showing as a widower. There is a death record for a an Elizabeth Abrahams in 1850 but regret this is for her 3 month old niece named after her. Things are complicated because the family use two sir names (Abrams as well as Abrahams) and their Elizabeths are sometimes called Betsy. Thanks again for any assistance, Anthony Fielding.
Hi All, Do you have an Elizabeth in your genealogical records that went missing in the Birmingham area, circa 1818 ? I am researching the maiden name of my Jewish 4 times great grandmother, Elizabeth, born circa 1800 from Warwickshire, possibly Aston, but most likely from the Birmingham area. If you are able to assist me, it is unlikely you would know her married name, as she married my 4g grandfather in about 1818-1820. I understand that most Jewish marriage records from this early period in Birmingham are now lost and she would have disappeared from your family genealogical radar at the point of this marriage. The first sighting I have of her is as married, with several listed children, on the 1841 census, where she has a tick in the box for born in Warwickshire. So, if you have lost track of an Elizabeth in Birmingham about 1818 onwards, please contact me, Many thanks, Anthony Fielding. (Researching Abrahams/Abrams 1786-1886)

Dear Genners, Further to what Jackye has written, I looked at a birth certificate I have for my earliest English-born relative, my great, great grandmother, Rachel PINKUS who was born in London in 1847. The certificate DOES indeed state the maiden name of the mother (in this case Harris). This should not be confused with the mother's maiden name being included in the Birth INDEX, beginning with September 1911. (Gee, what took them so long!) That said, in Anthony's case, as Elizabeth was born in 1800 and probably married some twenty years later. She would have been having children well before civil registration began. Hence, as Jackye suggested, following the children as they grew up, married, died, etc, may provide clues as to the mother's maiden name. Have you followed the husband? Was there any probate filed? Was any of her family mentioned as beneficiaries? What about the burial location, maybe her family was buried nearby? Good luck with your research. I've found the part of this family (Simon and Bessie and their son Philip) who emigrated from England to Philadelphia in 1904-5. I'm still looking for other members of this particular "Gold" line who may have been in England for Simon and Bessie to join in 1903 when they came to England (from Russia), or who may have stayed in England after they left. Possibly helpful information: 1. Bessie's maiden name, I am told, was Gorudsky or Novagorodsky (she was married when she and Simon came to England in 1903 not long before their son Philip was born there). However, on Philip's birth record the name is listed as "Rebecca Szlatta" - I can't explain this except possibly as a misinterpretation of the "what is your maiden name" question - (zlato/zoloto being the Slavic word for "gold"). 2. Ralph (Raphael??) Gold may be related. Any leads much appreciated. Martha Schecter Forsyth Newton, MA, USA
Anthony, Have you searched for her children's birth records from the registrar's office? I don't know when maiden names started appearing on births but it's possible the answer could be there. Do you have her burial information? It's possible that you could obtain her father's first name and that could help in searching. I'm not surprised to hear that the JC website is infected as I was refused each time I tried to log in. They said I had given the wrong password. I knew I hadn't since I gave the one that they wrote in my renewal letter. After wasting a aweek or so, I phone the JC and the IT department said it was not my fault that there was a fault at their end. Then I was able to use it again last week.
