    3. There is a birth shown on Free BMD in June qtr 1946 for BOXER Phillippa H Mother surname Emanuel Marylebone 1a 713 which makes Maureen Boxer the father. Cannot think of male replacement for Maureen. Perhaps a mistake was made on the marriage certificate which was later corrected with a new certificate but the actual record was not amended. Would love to know the result of this enquiry!! 3. Dear Genners, I really have to thank Miriam Pollak for bringing this to our attention as once again, the question forms the basis for a wonderful genealogical exercise in sleuthing. So let's see shall we. First of all, looking in FreeBMD there it is for all to see, Irene H.R. Emanuel marrying, presumably a Maureen Boxer. I looked at both marriage indices, for Boxer and Emanuel to make sure and yes, both indices appear to be supporting the idea that an Irene married a Maureen. (Not that this would bat anyone's eyelids these days.) So what next, well, I then checked to see if there had been a birth for an Irene Emanuel about 20 years ago and sure enough there was one Irene H Emanuel (mother, Silverman) born in Wandsworth in 1920. This would support the Lambeth marriage for those of you who are well-versed in London geography. Now it was over to Maureen Boxer and see if there was one born around the same time give or take five years - nada! Nothing save one born "oop north" in 1942. Couldn't be "her." Now what, well, I slid over to the site that shall remain nameless and looked for an Irene Boxer - after all, she was for real. I found an Irene H Boxer in the Electoral Registers living Lambeth, would you believe. I clicked on the image and there she was - with her husband Maurice! Problem solved! Thank you again Miriam for that "Monday" equivalent of the New York Times crossword! 3. Hello, Is there any one who is signed up to JewishGen (jewishgen.org) who can make out the Hebrew on the tombstone in the following link and and translate it for me? You may not be able to go directly as it is in the JewishGen Archives and you have to log in. If that is the case and you have to search for the person, go to the Burial Register - Canada - Ontario and search for Alexander LAZARUS, born Jun 1887, died 30 Jun 1899. I'd like to know if the Hebrew gives any other information. There is probably another Alexander Lazarus who died at around the same time; he isn't mine. I just realized - this isn't a British cemetery - Alex's father was from Devon - so contact me off-list if you can do this for me Thanks, Eve in Toronto

    2. Miriam Pollak
    3. Dear Mailing List, I have a slightly odd query that I would like some help with. I am trying to trace the descendants of Joseph & Esther Emanuel who lived at 266A Upper Tooting Road. Joseph died on the 14 August 1917 and his wife, Esther (nee Mordecai), died on the 7th August 1923. They had the following children (that I know of): Lewis, Hannah, Mark, Mary, Barnett, Joeseph, Goodman and Kitty. I know that Joseph died in WWI. I am writing to gain their permission to use a photograph that I have taken of Joseph & Esther's grave for a cover to a book that I am writing. I am not a member of their family. I would appreciate any help that members of the mailing list can provide. Kind regards, Miriam Pollak Melbourne, Australia currently working on a book about Plashet Cemetery

    3. I don't know why everyone seems to think i know everything about this site! I know the same as everyone else who went to see and read the pages. However, you would not be wanting a check, would you...you would be wanting copies of the documents and as, I have already said, each file has a different number of pages so you have to contact them with the reference numbers and they will see how many pages in each file and then tell you how much it would cost. It seems to cost £1 to request a quote for copies. Could people now, stop asking me questions because I don't know and I have not got the time to find out for you all. Good luck. Sherry Landa (Oxford, UK) I had checked out the FAQ"S and they want 28# per 1 hour check . That would be about $40. 00 in US money. Does that cover copies of the cards? I have 3 or 4 names to look up.

    3. http://www.archives.wyjs.org.uk/archives-news.asp I quote: Alien files released from the Archives - is there an alien in your family history? In the summer of 2012, West Yorkshire Archive Service received a deposit of alien registration records from Leeds City Police comprising almost 3000 cards, covering c1850 – c1960 relating to immigrants registering in the Leeds area. These have been catalogued, conserved and are now available for the public to view. This incredible family history resource provides not only an insight into the journey of immigration in the 19th and 20th centuries in West Yorkshire, but it also reveals some of the real life stories of those escaping religious and political persecution and of those desperately seeking economic opportunities. This fantastic collection includes registration cards and files which give us vast amounts of information on individuals and their families, including name, age, occupation, nationality, spouse and very often a brief history of their circumstances leading up to their arrival in the UK. This series of registration cards gives us a real glimpse into the conditions imposed upon these people in their homeland and the opportunities which presented themselves in the UK, USA and other countries. Information can be found on our online catalogue including the names and details of all the individuals who had cards, the actual files themselves can be viewed at our Wakefield office.
