Jan-Feb-Mar 1980; Vol. 15, pg. 2462 Westminster, London You can track Irene in the voter lists from 1945 to 1965. Maybe the addresses will suggest a connection. Hope this is helpful. 3. A few more leads to following regarding the inquiry regarding the connection between Adrian Charles Cuthbert Seligman and Charles Gabriel Seligman: The 1906 Jewish Encyclopedia has an extensive piece on the Seligman family including a family tree:  http://www.jewishencyclopedia.com/articles/13403-seligman.  By the way, the company the family founded was J & W Seligman and Company which was an abbreviation for Joseph & William Seligman. The grandfather of Adrian Seligman was Isaac Seligman and Isaac had a son Charles David Seligman who married Eva Merton which does not look like it is the Charles Seligman mentioned in the original posting. In the Palgrave Dictionary of Anglo-Jewish History, one can find Charles Gabriel Seligman (1873-1940) and his wife Brenda Zara Salaman (1885-1965).  CG Seligman was the son of a wine merchant.  The online copy of the Palgrave Dictionary is missing the page with the entirety of the piece on the Seligmans, so you would have to get it from the library. I have one Nathan LAZARUS, born in Exeter, Devon, about 1826 (not to be confused with his cousin of that name, born about 1849). Nathan was in Exeter at the time of the 1841 census. In 1853 he married another cousin, Fanny Lazarus, in Plymouth, Devon. By the time of the 1861 census they were in Toronto, Canada. At the time of the marriage, the Plymouth Hebrew Marriage Register has Nathan as "Gentleman, London", while a newspaper announcement refers to him as "of the United States". Apart from the wedding itself, I haven't been able to find Nathan anywhere between 1841 and 1861, in England on the States. I've tried the English census, looking for Nathan, born Devon. I've tried Nathan La**s - somewhere (I'm now confused about what I've searched!) I've tried the Ellis Island site and it insists that no Lazarus born that early came through there (which is rubbish, I'm sure - I must be doing something wrong). I'd really like to find out where Nathan was because I'm researching the Lazarus family's worldwide involvement in the optical trade and he was one of the first to go into it. 2. Colin Cohen
    3. This may be too complex an enquiry, let's see! My great-aunt, Brenda Salaman, married Charles Sligs* Seligman [1873-1940], later FRS. He was son of Hermann Seligmann [1835-89], note the presence/absence of the double-n. My father worked in intelligence in WWII and for reasons that are not at all clear in 1941 flew to Istanbul via Portugal, west Africa, Sudan and Egypt. In the family photo album there is a photo of Adrian Seligman. There is a possible clandestine war link between my father and the latter [for the his 'Boy's Own' adventures see www.telegraph.co.uk/news/obituaries/1439346/Adrian-Seligman.html, which does not tell the half!], but my father was working in a very different part of the secret jungle so I can't help felling there is a personal rather than 'work' connection and wonder if there is a family link between 'Sligs' and Adrian out there. Seligman seems quite a rare Jewish name in the UK compared to the USA so I feel a link should be findable, but I have not, so it may be the link was just 'business' and it is true there are one or two photos in the album that probably should never have been taken! Cheers, Colin -- 'I worry that the person who thought up Muzak may be thinking up something else. Lily Tomlin *anyone have ideas as to the meaning of Sligs as a nickname?

    1. [BRITISH-JEWRY] The role of 19th century arranged marriages
    2. Eve Richardson
    3. I may have asked this question before, in which case my apologies, but perhaps more recent lister will have more information. In my Lazarus family there was a network of intermarriages between cousins, down three generations. My grandmother, for example, the child of two Lazarus cousins, was also married to a Lazarus cousin. My grandmother's marriage, in London in 1916, has been reported to me from two disconnected sources as having been arranged. Some have suggested that family members intermarried because there were few options outside the family, but just a look through census lists and the marriage registers of the Plymouth and Exeter congregations shows that even in the mid 1850s this wasn't the case. Once the family moved out of Devon, the choices multiplied, and one can hardly argue that a young woman in 1916 London was limited to a small circle. I've wondered if the family arranged marriages to strengthen the family's businesses, also an extensive network of ties, but I have no information to back this up. Does anyone know of research material or books that touch on the role of arranged marriages in 19th century Jewish life? Any help gratefully received. Eve

    3. Dear Eve, (And BJ Owners, forgive me for beginning with straying from UK genealogy). As Ellis Island per se opened in the 1890s and closed in the 1920s, okay to be precise it was from 1892 until 1924, there is no way that Nathan Lazarus could have come through that portal. Yes, he could have entered the Port of New York but using the moniker "Ellis Island" can be misleading. A well-known website whose name cannot be mentioned has passenger manifests going back much earlier as I'm sure you know. It's more probable that he entered by way of Montreal instead, but I could be wrong. Now back to UK genealogy: Your plea for help for locating any information on Nathan Lazarus between 1841 and 1861 raises the typical question that any genealogist should be asking first - what documents would have been created during that period of time that he might appear in? This is what separates out the novices from the more experienced researchers. Enthusiastic people always ask whatever happened to great aunt/uncle (fill in the blank). The real question is, as I've cited above; knowing what records exist, what they contain and would the information therein be of any use to you? What did Nathan do for a living? Was he a merchant (try business/trade directories). Perhaps his trade or profession had a guild or trade organization. Was he active in his local congregation? If a business owner did the local newspaper run adverts? Of course reading between the lines, if he hadn't made much of himself, then there is far less likelihood that he would have been in many if any of the documentary records of that time. On the other hand if he had committed a crime, there might be something in the local newspaper! And it's just occurred to me that as the couple married in 1853 - did they have any children? Do their birthplaces shed any light on where the couple were living? These avenues of research are the same approaches one would take no matter which side of the pond he might be residing. 3. Hello listers Does anyone have a current sub to a well known family history site starting with ‘A’ who can give me a quick look-up and copy a page for me? When I had a sub I linked a document from the England and Wales Probate Calendar to my tree, but when I looked at it recently I see the reference image gives me only the first part, however the remainder of the information is on the second page, which unfortunately wasn’t saved: most annoying! The probate is for Barnett NATHAN d 25 Dec 1866 . The will was proved in Feb 1867. I have recently found some old research that refers to this will being re-sworn at a later date. I am thinking of sending for a copy of the will, although I have found some hand-copied excerpts in research completed in UK about 30 years ago – presumably the researcher actually sighted the will. Can someone tell me if I send for a will under the first reference (ie 1867 probate) will it also have the further re-sworn part on it? I think the later re-swearing may be when the widow died in 1886, but I cant find a reference to her having a will at all. I am also a bit uncertain about the ordering of this will – I cant seem to find a way to do it online and paying other than in cash or cheque? That seems a bit out-dated for the 21st Century!
