    3. Can anyone cleverer than me find this family in 1851 and 1861 UK censuses? I cannot believe they were not there for either. Adolphe Casimer (or variant) CHOIRON entered Dover from Ostend 2 Mar 1846 Married at All Souls Marylebone (don't ask cos at least 1 daughter married in Synagogue) 24 Oct 1853 just given as full age & of the parish as was his bride (Sarah SACKVILLE) he was a cabinet maker. Birth of son Adolphe Cazmear (or variant) in Aug 1854 baptised twice once in Aug 1854 at All Souls Marylebone res. 12 Bayham Pl (checked in 1851 census and not there) still cabinet maker; rebaptised Jan 1857 at St Pancras Camden same details but father now as carpenter and address is Little King Street South (checked in 1861 not there). Birth of daughter Emma Julia Josephine CHOIRON Pancras reg Mar qtr 1857 but born Dec 1856 baptised Jan 1857 as above with her brother. She married in Paris in Jan 1877 and went on to have a daughter married in Paris in 1895. Birth of second daughter Adelaide Emily Jane CHOIRON reg Mar 1859 Pancras. She married in Paris in Nov 1881 in Synagogue. Birth of third daughter Lydia Isabella Sarah CHOIRON reg Sept qtr 1862 Pancras and died Dec qtr 1862 Pancras. I have tried everything I can think of and am still drawing a blank on both the websites which hold UK censuses and use subsription/pay per view. The JC is not coming up with anything either. So, anyone wanting a Sunday Sleuthing project feel free- PLEASE! Thanks Sherry Landa (Oxford, UK)

    1. [BRITISH-JEWRY] Joseph Marks - 1851 census check
    2. Eve Richardson
    3. I'm trying to find more info about my gr gr grandfather, Joseph Marks, born about 1819. My earliest info on him is from his marriage to Nancy Lazarus in London in 1856, when he is an Oxford jeweler. They appear in the 1861 census in Oxford and his place of birth is given as Mallaua, Poland, which I tentatively interpret as Mlawa, Poland. I have no idea when Joseph came to England. A certain big genealogy site lists two Joseph Marks, born about 1817, residing in Devon (Nancy was from Exeter) in the 1851 census. I'd like to know if either were born in Poland, or indeed if there is any Joseph Marks born circa 1819 in Poland in the 1851 census. If some kind soul would check these for me - I'm sure I have in the past, but I'd like to recheck them - I'd be very grateful. Joseph doesn't seem to have been naturalized, so no joy there. In the 1881 census for Birmingham and in 1890 in London, according to his death certificate, he was a Hebrew teacher, but I haven't been able to find out where. Any fresh thoughts most welcome. 1. [BRITISH-JEWRY] Re Manchester Naturalisation Society
    2. Jill Whitehead
    3. I am interested in the workings of the Manchester Naturalisation Society (records on FindMyPast) which acted like a Friendly Society where hopefuls paid their money in each week (on average one shilling), and then a ballot took place for the naturalisation (about 10% were successful it seems). This operated between 1896 and 1909 and 542 people were members, including my great grandfather Nathan Abrahams who paid in 3 shillings as his first payment (which is worth about £30 in today's money). Nathan had been living in Manchester since 1867, and was a successful Master Cabinet Maker with a wife and nine children born in Manchester (four of them married off) by the time he joined the society in early 1900. He evidently was not successful in winning the ballot and it would seem may have preferred to provide funds for the marriages of two daughters Annie (my grandmother who married in 1900) and Jane (who married her cousin in 1901). I would be interested to know if anyone has carried out any research into the Manchester Naturalisation Society, and knows how it came into being and how it worked, as well as who the lucky winners were in the ballots that took place. If 10% were successful did any of the 90% who were not successful apply for naturalisation anyway? My other three great grandfathers all naturalised during the 1890's in Edinburgh, Liverpool and Grimsby - though in the last case at his third attempt, having tried twice in Hull. 3. Have you tried the Association of Jewish Refugees or the Kinder Transport. I believe the Public records Office at Kew have records of these. The AJR now meets twice a week at Belsize Square Synagogue having moved from Cleve Road. There is also a Mr. Strauss who is connected to the World Jewish Relief, who helped to bring people over from Germany. 3. Gila (I assume that's your name since you didn't sign your name or location on your posting), What a terrible story! I'm not clear about what you're asking. Do you want to find what happened to the real sons of your relatives or the ones who arrived in the UK? It's possible that our list can help you with the latter. If your aunt and uncle's children disappeared and never made it to England, that would be a subject for another list. 3. Many thanks to Barbara, Linda, Susan, Ann - and anyone I may have missed. So much material to absorb from listers on and off the board - an overload even for my quite large screen! As some of you have discovered both Adrian S [I did not know he had middle names before] and 'Sligs' were most interesting in very different ways. I had a lot of info on Sligs, though not the entry in Palgrave, but coincidentally tomorrow I'll be in the Bodleian for the first time in ages and they have it. I've only read one of Adrian's books, again in Bod, and if anyone wants a ripping yarn that's also true they are a great read. What I hope to do it connects Adrian to Sligs: you people have provided a lot of family info on Adrian and I see his grandfather was the banker Isaac Seligman. I have just a slight feeling that there were were also bankers in Charles [Sligs] Seligman's family, but all I have are his parents [Herman, the wine merchant, 1835-89] and his mother [Olivia Mndez da Costa]. She is not on my research list though I do have more on hsomewhere. Interestingly she was descended from Emanuel Mendez da Costa, who became, in 1747, the second Jewish Fellow of the Royal Society and was later its Secretary, so it is interesting that Sligs also became an FRS [as was his brother-in-law Redcliffe Salaman]. Any further help in linking the two Seligman lines, or showing there is no link, would be wonderful, as if there is no link the photo of Adrian in the family album would have to be for 'professional' reasons. Cheers, Colin

    2. Barbara O'Connor
    3. Hi Colin, <My great-aunt, Brenda Salaman, married Charles Sligs* Seligman [1873-1940], later FRS. He was son of Hermann Seligmann [1835-89]... In the family photo album there is a photo of Adrian Seligman. There is a possible clandestine war link between my father and the latter .. and wonder if there is a family link between 'Sligs' and Adrian out there.> Whilst I can't presently pinpoint the precise family connection, I hope the following information provides some assistance. Adrian (Adrien) Charles C SELIGMAN (26 Nov 1909 - Aug 2003) was a master mariner (according to a 1948 passenger list for "Mauretania"). He was the son of Richard Joseph Simon SELIGMAN (17 Mar 1878 - Sep 1972) and Hilda Mary McDOWELL (1882 - 20 Dec 1964). The 1911 census shows that Adrian had an older sister named Audrey and his father's occupation as Chemist and Chemical Engineer. Adrian's paternal grandparents were Isaac SELIGMAN (2 Dec 1834 - 9 Apr 1928) and Lina (Lena) MESSEL (c1851 - 1 Oct 1925). Isaac's obituary, which may provide some useful clues, is quoted as follows: "DEATH OF MR. ISAAC SELIGMAN. The death is announced of Mr. Isaac Seligman, senior partner in, and founder of, the firm of Seligman Brothers, who has just passed away in his 94th year. Born on December 2, 1834, he graduated at the College of New York in 1853, and then joined his brothers' firm in New York, which was subsequently converted into a banking business under the name of M. and W. Seligman and Co. In 1864 a London branch, Seligman Brothers, was opened by Mr. Seligman, and since then and until quite recently he has taken an active part in the affairs of the City." As soon as I've tidied up all my relevant notes I'll email a copy to your private email address. Cheers, Babs O'Connor Penrith NSW Australia P.S. My SELIGMAN connection is through the marriage of one of Richard's brothers
