Have you tried incoming arrivals to the UK - he may have arrived after the census? I have no census records pre his marriage and all of the information afterwards. (I DON'T need info on the bride's family either, I have it) This is the definite information I have- Henry SOLOMON born circa 1847 in Chatham, Kent. Father Simon MAGNUS, occupation, merchant. (Henry's brother was called Louis) Occupation- Africa merchant. Lived at 37 Richmond Terrace, Clapham Road, London (address on marriage certificate) and various addresses in Liverpool. Married Nina (Matilda) Lichtenstein at the West London Synagogue on December 1st 1881. Any pre marriage information on him would be gratefully received. Wonder if he was in Africa because of his job, but can't find his address in the census at all. Would imagine he has to be at it in 1881 census- unless it is a boarding house. Sherry, Yes it is the same person the JC had no help shown except that Minnie Arion had a brother Wolfe as did dthe 1911 census. The clincher is the probate of the mother's will showing she left her monies to Minnie Arion wife of Louis Arion. Hope that helps. Hello List I have just received details on the above subject via another List. It is new to me and I have found it very interesting/helpful. It may be of use to others on this list. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~atpc/genealogy/ surnames/cref-given-names.pdf Apologies if you already know about it!1 Cherry in Surrey
Hi, My subscription to the JC has been deactivated despite having renewed over a month ago. As I am away it's hard to sort out with them! I am trying to find out the following. (Please don't send me anything else except the information required as listed below because I also have server problems due to Sky mutating to Yahoo mail and Orange (my fsnet and wanadoo accounts) being it's normal naff self plus the fact I am on dial up) OK I want to know if the Minnie BEHRMAN who married Louis ARION at Southport Synagogue in 1921 is the same as the Minnie BEHRMAN d/o Rabbi Mendel Isaac BEHRMAN who appears in 1911 census at 38 Prince Rd., Sunderland-as the date of birth given on her naturalisation (and age at death) don't quite match those given on census. I thought the JC might have either marriage announcement for the couple and/or obit for the Rabbi which might list his children. Thanks for your help and sorry to sound so tetchy ;-0 Sherry Landa (still at 23170 Viersat where it is still "grey and pissy" and carrier pigeon is still quicker than my internet connection)
I noticed the same thing. For me, a better source would be the personal names database on Jewishgen. Thanks for passing this along but I was surprised by how few Yiddish names were included. Even old testament names like David did not include a Yiddish equivalent. If anyone has another list focussed on Yiddish names and then giving an English equivalent, that would be very helpful. Hello all, I have been a Lurker round here for quite a while. For those that don´t know In Internet culture, a lurker is typically a member of an online community like this who observes, but does not actively participate. Over the years I have had such great advice from members of this group so I am (even as a lurker) making this offer of help. I will be visiting Rainham Cemetery, Rainham, Essex, England TOMORROW SUNDAY 6th If you need a photo and have a plot number I would be honoured to help. For those other lurkers out there check out http://www.british-jewry.org.uk/ which has become a great resource since I last visited Thank you Sherry and Jackye for the great effort you put in Russell Vaughan Requests to workinaway@hotmail.com
Thank you, Russell. We appreciate the compliment and maybe other "lurkers" out there will post as well. I've been reading about German Jews, particularly about arranged marriages in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Apparently dowries were a very important part of the marriage settlement - sometimes, it seems, more important than the bride. I understand that my grandmother's marriage in London in 1916 was arranged, but I can find no information about marriage and dowry practices among British Jews, and I would really like to. Does anyone know of any such information? Does anyone have personal information about dowry practices in the 19th and 20th centuries (among Jews who had been in England for several generations)? Eve Toronto, waiting for spring

Dear All Is anyone researching Simon Chernitsky married to Annie Ostroff or Annie Goldstein in Mile End, Sept quarter, 1901. I'm not sure which Annie he married. The other groom showing on the record is Solomon Leonard. Thanks Naomi Ogin Brisbane
Dear All Is anyone researching the Chernitsky families who were in the East End of London at least in 1901 onwards. I have a fair bit of information and am trying to connect Barnett Chernitsky, wife Rebecca and children Golda, Annie and Buby (male). Thanks Naomi Ogin Brisbane
