Give us the name and date of death and place, Cynthia. I have searched newspapers, including Times and JC online no luck either with a death notice or coroner report. The death was a classic 'dropped dead' nothing extraordinary. You might get as much information from a death certificate as a coroner's report then. If he died of natural causes within the UK. What's the year of death? Becca (In the UK)
hi Has anyone ever successfully searched LMA for a coroners report? I am wanting someone who can visit and look up an inquest for me – the minimum cost of 50 pounds an hour is a bit too boggling for me! cheers Cynthia (New Zealand)
Cynthia, London coroners' inquest reports are pretty thin on the ground. There is a good run for the City of London (from 1788), the ancient borough of Southwark (1788-1932), and the City of Westminster (1760-1880), but not much else. Survival depends on the date and on the Coroner's District, which is given in column 7 of the death certificate and is not the same as the civil registration district. If you can post the details from the certificate (or email them to me, if you prefer), it will be easier to advise. Otherwise, as Sherry suggests, the newspapers may be the way to go, always assuming the death was a 'newsworthy' one. I've not searched LMA for this but I was told years ago of a much easier way to go. Many places the Coronor's Reports were destroyed and so you will usually find an account of inquests in local newspapers. They are pretty verbatim and it definitely worked for mum's uncle who fell out of a tree aged 10 and died from concussion as a result -this was 1923. Might this be a better option for you? We also have the british-jewry site blocked by our virus checker We emailed admin yesterday, but not had a reply as yet - hopefully they are working on it Darryl & Hazel (Melbourne, Australia)
Hi Anyone had trouble access in the BJ web page? My virus checker has identified a trojan and refuses to let me on there! Cynthia (New Zealand)
Further to Marsha's posting. 1. There are no circumcision records for Leeds in any registry. 2. There were many Rabbis who performed ceremonies in the various Leeds synagogues. AFAIK there is no definitive list anywhere. 3. A birth town would NOT be in any marriage records in the 1880s. The closest would be much much later and for London where there was a section on the AUTHORISATION which says "native of..." which is sometimes filled in (but not always). Best wishes, Sherry Landa (Oxford, UK)
I have been sent the requested article already. Thanks so much for the quick response - I haven't even received the BJ digest with my request as yet!! Myra Waddell.
Hello Can someone please help me? I have accessed the very wordy and disjointed Rabbi Ash circumcision register at http://www.jewishgen.org/jcr-uk/susser/weddingcircash.htm I have found two references in the transcriptions to children born Dover to the father Isaacher; Q11 Solomon b Isaacher and Q16 Mordecai b Isaacher Further down the page after the general index is a list of fathers names written as: name f (=father of) name A note at the beginning of this list says ‘numbers are page numbers’. With the names Issacher, there are three children born. The last one is obviously a different generation. Issachar f Issachar 11 Issachar f Dov 17 [marriage 1775, on ‘page 11’] Issachar f Solomon Aryeh 10 [circumcision 1810] Help! I cannot find Issacher f Issacher on page 11 – am I looking at this right? Or has there been a transcription error? I wonder if there is an easier to use database of the names available. Cynthia (New Zealand) NATHAN, HART, SOLOMONS, LEVY, ISAACS,VANDERLYN, BARNARD et al
