    1. [BRITISH-JEWRY] ANSELL JC Archives RAOGK
    2. Dear All, I have been a silent member of this list for a few years now as I have searched for my ANSELL/POSENER family in England. Two years ago I was contacted by an unknown family member after he randomly googled his son's name to see where the son was playing chess in a tourament. The son's name Simon ANSELL is the same as our mutual ggfather whose details I had placed on Rootsweb British-Jewry some years prior as I strived to confirm that this was indeed my long lost family. To cut a long story short, we ecstatically swapped all relevant information, and a visit from the UK to New Zealand has taken place, and we are now trying to confirm other details. Today I searched Simon ANSELL in the JC Archives to discover the following reference: Archive JC AUGUST 12 1898 Page 1 DIAMOHD, sister of Mr. Simon Ansell of 18,14*tria-park, Manor-rd, Stamford-hill,sister of Iraac Aniell, This appears to be ? DIAMOND, (name previously unknown but possibly DIAMOND) sister of Simon and Isaac Ansell, my ggfather and his brother. She was rumoured not to have immigrated to England but remained in "Russia" To retrieve the full detail I would need to subscribe to JC. Would there be anyone out there already subscribed who would consider performing a RAOGK by retrieving this information for me? I am happy to repay/reciprocate in whatever is an appropriate way. Thank you. Regards, Sonya Mitchell/ANSELL New Zealand

    3. Re: Latvian Jewish Historical Roots Brenda, If you have information of your family living in Courland/Latvia after 1860 The Latvian archivest will be able to help you. Although my Maternal family was registered in Raseiniai, Lithuania, family insisted they came from Sassmacken, Courland. I sent a letter detailing all the information I had gathered about family and though it took more than a year for results, I received documents detailing my ggf [b. 1813] from his arrival in 1830 until his death in 1888 plus all his children, marriages and birth of his grandchildren. You should be able to find address and details on the Latvian Sig. Good luck Annette Young

    3. Sonya, I'm connected to an English Ansell branch via my great uncle Alexander Harris, 1850-1905. His daughter Sophia married Arthur (real name was Isaac) in 1903, and his son Alfred married Arthur's sister in 1905. Lily and Arthur's parents were Angell (real name Edward) Ansell and Katie Cohen. Don't know why the Ansell's didn't like their given names! Is this a branch of the same family? I think it was Judy Wolkovich who gave me some Ansell info. thanks David

    3. Debbie Don't know if this will help but I found 1888 divorce documents for a relative in the Supreme Court archives of Sydney. It was a gold mine - letters from family, detailed affidavits and even a photo of the bride one Marie KEYZOR nee JOSEPH, daughter of Alfred JOSEPH of London then Sydney. By proving I was related, even though distantly, I was able to get copies of everything. If they divorced in Melbourne there should be something similar. If you can find more details I would be happy to look them up if they are in Melbourne. 3. Dear All, Since I received some, imformation concerning the origins of VINER families from Leeds,as possibly having come from Latvia (Riga / Courland ),I found an excellent site relating the history of Jewish Latvia: http://www.li.lv/index.php?option=com_content <http://www.li.lv/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=99&Itemid=468> &task=view&id=99&Itemid=468 Fascinating reading. My afterthought (driving me crazy)...How,just how can we know from where they all originated ?(no naturalisation papers at Kew) Even the 80-90 year olds in the family do not remember !! 2. Merv & Naomi Barnett
    3. I know this is slightly off the topic for B-J but as I regard the members of this list so highly I hope I will be permitted to post a question which isn't directly related to B-J. I am keen to look at passenger lists (or shipping arrivals) for Wellington, New Zealand in 1939, probably from April onwards. My parents emigrated there and I would like to fill in some gaps in my own family's research. All suggestions gratefully appreciated. Naomi Barnett Melbourne, Australia

    2. Debbie Bozkurt
    3. First I want to thank everybody for there time and effort in looking up records for me, you have come up trumps again. Thought I would quickly share my discoveries to date. Leah SCHNEIDERS married Michael JACOBS 1873, London (lost at that point). FOUND, By late 1873 they had travelled to Melbourne, Victoria. Michael had by then added Alfred to his name. There was no mention of the name Alfred on birth Index, English Marriage certificate or Hebrew translation. He went on to have 3 children, 2 surviving in Melbourne. Then I found him and Leah on the National Archives site, she divorcing him for all manner of things, icluding one which he was imprisoned for a month for a bigamous marriage. He "married" in 1880 before the divorce under the name Alfred Jacobs, the Judge was confident this was the same person as Michael Jacobs to convict him, can't find a copy yet of the trial. By 1891 Leah is back to her maiden name SCNEIDERS/SNIDERS and the children are also known by that name, although her daughter married under her birth name of JACOBS. Lost Michael/Alfred again, don't know if he made a new life with his partner, married her legally, or did she dump him. Still looking but not sure for what name! Again thanks for your patience and help Debbie Bozkurt Outer Hebrides - Wet and Windy again!

    3. Hi Naomi, Shipping lists are held at Archives New Zealand http://www.archives.govt.nz/ if you do a search on their finding aid, Archway, you find the information about them. Unfortunately however, they're not digitised. If you can wait a couple of months until I get home I can look up the information for you (I work there) but if not you can ask for the information via their remote reference service. cheers Gillian (in Glasgow) On Jan 23, 2008 8:23 AM, Merv & Naomi Barnett <barnett@netspace.net.au> wrote: > I know this is slightly off the topic for B-J but as I regard the > members of this list so highly I hope I will be permitted to post a > question which isn't directly related to B-J. > > I am keen to look at passenger lists (or shipping arrivals) for > Wellington, New Zealand in 1939, probably from April onwards. 3. In a recent email, Debbie Bozkirt asked "does any one know an easy way of find passenger list to Australia pre 1890, as in my experience unless you know what state they went to it is very difficult." Many people may not realize that Australia is as large as, for example, the United States in terms of landmass. With countries this size it is not surprising that they gets carved up into states, which both Australia and the United States has done. (Not many other examples come to mind, save Russia, but I think we can discount that one.) Therefore genealogists need to remember that in actuality, each state functions as a its own country and so, Debbie will find that many matters, such as immigration will be dealt with at state level. Just be grateful you're dealing with just half a dozen AU states and not 50 US states! This is akin to saying that great Uncle Harry died in America in 1921, how would I find his death certificate - well by knocking on the door over every city or county health department and asking! There is nothing national (or federal as one says over here) save the Social Security Death Index (SSDI) but even that only begins in 1962 and doesn't include everyone who died after that date. I'm afraid (without knowing more) that you are going to have to check it out port by port. But I would first check on line and see if some kind soul has indexed any of these earlier voyages.
