The shul survived until the mid-1970's. I actually remember attending a service there in about 1973. I recall opening a prayer book and seeing it dated from the opening of the synagogue in 1860 since it contained the prayer for Prince Albert, the Prince Consort, and Edward Prince of Wales. I also seem to rememeber a plaque in memory of the Jewish soldiers who died in the Boer War 1902. By the early 1970's there were few Jews living in the Cheetham Hill area. Sadly after the synagogue closed the building was left to decay and the lead thiefs and vandals soon left it in such a dangerous state it had to be demolished. A sad end. 3. Hi Phillip, What an interesting, though tragic, snippet of social history in your account of your ancestor ! He may simply have had dementia, poor man. And jailed for stealing a ribbon ! I suppose it was thought better for society to keep such people off the streets, though there must have been many on them, unable to receive proper care or shelter. I wonder how our values now would seem to the average person of that not-so-distant past. Eve Richardson (in Toronto, Canada, but wondering where in Norfolk you are as I spend my summers there.)

    3. HI from chilly grey drizzly Jerusalem. I wonder what was the profession of the "mad" David. Mad + ribbons = could be have been a mad hatter....was it arsenic that drove them "mad"? Just a thought. You are doing so well with your ancestors. My Gx2 GF has been sighted in the 1861 census but none of us can find when or where GF and GM died. Weird. Enjoy your mice. We have 2 sheep on the patio but they are ceramic. The cats are real tho...Preshie (Precious) my indoor/outdoor phat cat, and Preppie (Preposterous) our skinny Mommycat and niece of Preshie, and a load of eager Toms, mostly for food tho, hanging around hopefully..(Too many unwanted cats here, it's sad but does keep the rats away). 3. Dear Listers David Jacobs ( Litzen/Letson and most probably LIETZEN from West Prussia ) who is the insane ribbon stealer is my 5 x great grandfather. My distant cousins and I have no idea when he became insane other than in the Old Bailey Trial of 1801 when his son Henry Jacobs ( my 4x great grandfather) said he had been insane for a number of years. What is sad ( but given the times not unsurprising) is that he got 1 year in Newgate dying in 1809. You can imagine the treatment and conditions of 'ordinary'prisoners in Newgate early 1800s let alone those for an insane old man! The trade of our Jacobs line including David was glass. They were glass dealers, cutters, engravers and manufacturers and had premises in Artillery Passage, Mansell Street, Charles Street and Crown Street amongst others. 3. Hi there from very soggy cold and windy Stornoway. Probably a silly question, did any pre 1791 marriage records survive the blitz in any format from the Great Synagogue. We are trying to trace our David JACOBS (hebrew name david b jacob litzin/letson), who died in 1809 aged approx 83. All his sons that married after 1791 were registered at the Great Synagogue, Unfort. my 4x great grandfather Philip JACOBS married just before. David was in his 50s when his children were born in the late 1760 and 1770s, he was already deemed 'mad' at that point and was frequently arrested between 1777 and 1801 for stealing ribbons, his defence was he was mad for years but his luck ran out in 1801 and his was sentenced for 1 year in prison. It does seem logical that he married either late or our family was his second marriage. His wife certainly appears not to be around in the later part of the 18th century as his sons were finding him accommodation etc. from descriptions at the trial he didn't look after himself and was a mess. And you know girls we would NOT let our men out in public like that so I am wondering whether his wife died in childbirth perhaps.....maybe the stolen ribbons were for her in his mind. Can anyone point in the direction of any archives on either marriages, books on the aldgate area/ minories or any pre census of that area to see if I can trace David Jacobs pre 1770s. Thank you for your patience in reading my story, its lonely up here need someone to chat to! Debbie Bozkurt Outer Hebrides PS my mouse has come visiting again and brought his wife with him!

    3. Dear Listers Have just stumbled across an amazing research resource for those of you who had family who ended up in Victoria, Australia. In 1891 a group of women went around Melbourne and Victoria getting signatures for a petition to present to the Parliament of Victoria saying women should have the vote. Names and addresses can be researched on line for free and copies of signatures downloaded for free. Following a quick glance there are women with the surnames MARKS, COHEN, LEVY and BARNETT there plus one by the name of KEYZOR which has opened up a whole new line of research for me. The site is http://www.prov.vic.gov.au/petitions/women.asp Keira Lockyer Country Victoria on a bright and sunny day with kookaburras laughing and magpies knocking on the back door for a feed.

    1. [BRITISH-JEWRY] LEEDS FAMILIES
    2. Brenda Habshush
    3. Dear all, In the course of my search for Viner/Winer families on the Leeds synagogue site which gives marriages and burials, I have made some very interesting discoveries of the "intertwining" of Leeds families through the section on marriages. This section usually gives the name of the groom and brides fathers and addresses.. Eventually one finds other siblings and their relatives through marriage. In this way I came across a personal family connection about which I had no former imformation. Because I am at home (therefore "glued" to the computer) these days, I am at this site, day-in-day-out. Its a most exciting game, and quite an insite to the Leeds community from the period of mid 1800's up until the end of the 1900's. In Dr.Geoffrey Raisman's book "The Undark Sky",his father reads the old gravestones at Hilltop Cemetery and remembers the people and their circumstances. This site gives me a similar feeling, like "I've been there" ! http://www.jewishgen.org/JCR-UK/Leeds.htm (no password needed) Shabbat shalom, Brenda Habshush,Israel., . .
