    3. Hi Listers I would be interested in identification of the men in this photograph as one of them could be Joseph COHEN, husband of my g g g aunt Naomi COHEN JP. Joseph COHEN was president of the congregation around 1903 of the Belgrave St Synagogue Leeds. He was on the Board of Guardians in Leeds. I have 1 photograph of Naomi - but no photographs of Joseph so am hoping that someone out there can identify him in the photogaph. In the Jewish Chronicle of 9 September 1932 there is an article in which the Leeds Board of Guardians congratulates Naomi COHEN on her appointment as a Justice of the Peace for Leeds. The following names are mentioned which might be of use to someone: Mr Stanley LIGHTMEN - treasurer Mr W KRISTALL - chairman Mr J GILLINSON Maurice STROSS I GOLDMAN S NATHAN Gerald COHEN L LIGHTMAN B ELLIS JW FOX The Jewish Chronicle of 29 June 1934 published a photograph of Naomi Cohen as one of the Prominent Jewish Communal Workers in Leeds but I was unable to obtain a copy of her photograph. I no longer have a subscription to the JC so if anyone could possible obtain a copy for me I would be thrilled > Shalom Jackie and Sherry, > I have not seen letters replying to Elly about identification of the photo > of a Leeds synagogue with officials (sent through viewmate) > I sent the photo to two Leeds sources for possible identification and > await > the replies. > After "raking" the web I came up with a small photo of two men (of those > years) outside a Leeds building. 1. [BRITISH-JEWRY] Solomon and Solomons in the Cape
    2. Sigrid McMahon
    3. Hello Hazel, while I have none of the names you mention apart from the Solomon, there seems to be a connection. Here is what I have: Joseph Solomon: born between 1788-90 probably Canterbury, son of Nathaniel Solomon and Phoebe de Metz, followed his elder brother Saul to St. Helena. Joseph was engaged to Hannah Moss before leaving England and they were married on St. Helena Island on 7 July 1814. 8 children: Margaret, Nathaniel, Henry, Saul, Richard, Benjamin, Edward, Isabella, all born on St. Helena. The family migrated to Cape Town in 1831. Joseph and Hannah's children became very much involved in South African politics. Benjamin Solomon: I have no dates for him but Benjamin too followed his elder brother Saul to St. Helena and in 1823 married Eliza Georgina Chamberlain. After her death in May 1831, Benjamin followed his brother Joseph to Cape Town. All I have on Benjamin from then on is that he married Johanna Petronella du Plessis, had a rather large family and died at an advanced age. The Bedford connection: While Joseph and Hannah Solomon remained Jewish, all their children converted to Christianity. Son Edward Solomon, who married Jessie Matthews, became a Missionary for some years with the London Missionary Society and lived in Griqualand. Later he went to Haukey? and ultimately was a Congregational Minister at Bedford, Cape Colony. I've only got the following children: Sir Edward Philip, Sir Richard Prince, Sir William Henry, and Emilie Solomon, don't know where they were born. A 1937 article in the Time Magazine says that "though no Minister, Emilie Solomon of Capetown was made the first woman chairman of the Congregational Union of South Africa" and "Miss Solomon signed her name in a bible in which were the signatures of all her predecessors including her father, who held the post once." I don't know yet how your Richard Edward Solomon born 24 Jun 1855 in Bedford ties in but I guess he is a grandson of either Joseph or Benjamin. Regards, Sigi McMahon, South Australia

    3. No, "Lenie" was not a typo. I know she is "Lemie" in the Susser Archives, but throughout the Brown Family Papers (held at the University of Cape Town Libraries and donated in 1976 by Mrs. Janet McGregor nee Dick, 3rd great-granddaugther of Nathaniel Solomon and Phoebe de Metz) she is clearly called Lene and Lenie. 1. [BRITISH-JEWRY] Berkovitch-Lebowitz
    2. Alan Booth
    3. Good afternoon, We are opening a new line of enquiry and seeking information on the life of Hyman BERKOVITCH and his wife Rachel (nee Lebowitz), both born in a village near Iase(Jassy) Romania around 1877-1880. Driven from their homeland as many others, we believe they married before arriving in the east end of London around 1900-1905. Hyman was a carpenter and started to find work in this trade. At some stage he entered into partnership with Harry SIBELSKY, and they traded as wood-turners under the name SIBELSKY & BERKOVITCH at 7 Edward Terrace, Drysdale street, Hoxton, London N1 This arrangement was formally dissolved in 1927. Hyman and Rachel Berkovitch had six children between, we think, 1908 to 1926. they bwere Barnet (Barney), Esther, Lily, Louis, Milly and Herschuel(Harry)the latter born at St Agnes Terrace, Hackney Feb 1926. Esther married a Mr Stoppler (spelling?) Lily married Alfred Posner Milly married Joe Payne They probably moved house many times around the east end of London. We would be delighted to hear from anyone who has knowledge of any of these folk - addresses, relationships, dates, origins and earlier family etc. Hyman Berkovitch died in london 1941/2 and his widow Rachel in 1953. Many thanks in advance. Alan Booth, Glos

    3. Shalom Jackie and Sherry, I have not seen letters replying to Elly about identification of the photo of a Leeds synagogue with officials (sent through viewmate) I sent the photo to two Leeds sources for possible identification and await the replies. After "raking" the web I came up with a small photo of two men (of those years) outside a Leeds building. These are photos of Boards of Guardians or shul officials. Murray Freedman, the genealogist and historian who has produced several books on Leeds Jewry and synagogues would surely recognise the people on this interesting photo. 1. [BRITISH-JEWRY] Emily Somers
    2. Ann Jensen
    3. Emily does not seem to be part of the theatrical Somers lines that marry into Schwersensky in Liverpool. There is a daughter of George and Phoebe born 1878, Amy, who was a comedienne. However, I have a very open mind about the Schwersenskys in South Africa...it's a rare name, and the "cousinhood" was truly alive. Is there any more information? Ann Jensen Australia

Do they exist from this time frame? What is on them, and if they do exist, can one request a translation (if not in English)? 1. [BRITISH-JEWRY] Names of witnesses at marriages
    2. Susanne Barton
    3. I was in touch recently with a BJ lister about one of her relatives who was a witness at the marriage of one of my great aunts. This made me wonder if it would be of interest to post the names of all the witnesses on the marriage certificates I have acquired.......it might provide a link to a certain place / time / inter-family friendship if you see a name on my list which is also on your tree. Date of marriage / Place / Witnesses December 1884 Liverpool Louis HAMMERSTEIN and Judah LAZARUS December 1894 Liverpool D.G.BAKER and Isaac GOODMAN August 1898 Whitechapel B.W TURNER and Jacob ISAACS November 1901 Liverpool J.DAVIES and B. BLANK December 1901 Liverpool W. ADLER and a name in ?Yiddish December 1902 Liverpool S.ROBINSON (?) and David AFFKIN / HAFKIN January 1908 Liverpool Morris ABRAHAMS and Joshua COOPERSTEIN August 1915 Liverpool Simon LEVY and Emanuel SHAW I know nothing more about most of these witnesses, but if anyone recognizes any of the names above I can tell you a bit more about the people getting married. Other sources tell me it was about minus 34 C, with a wind chill of minus 44 C, this morning)

    3. More thanks to listers who are assisting me with their comments. I have already emailed the London Metropolitan Archives to see if they hold information on my great-uncle and, if so, whether it is possible for me to order same. Three years ago, when I attempted to get my maternal grandfather's application for naturalisation which he made in 1930, I had to make a special request for it, since it was less than 100 years ago. However, there was no difficulty in obtaining same. He had died - I was his grand-daughter, etc. - being good reasons why I should be allowed to order them. Best wishes from Myra in sunny South Australia, watching the colourful rosellas (parrots) on our bird-table in the garden.

    2. Myra & Peter Waddell
    3. When I received naturalization applications for both my grandfathers (England), they were full of lovely genealogical information - where and when they were born, married, children's names and ages, where their wife was born, etc. etc. These applications were made in 1913 and 1930, so maybe there wasn't as much information included in 1811 but, for me, they were both treasure troves. 1. Re: [BRITISH-JEWRY] Future Censuses
    2. Michele Skehill
    3. Again, something of interest from the current Avotaynu newsletter: Will Great Britain Abandon Censuses? There is a report that Great Britain is considering abandoning the taking of national censuses after the 2011 census. The rationalization is that the population has become so mobile that it is impossible to get an accurate count. A spokesperson for the Office for National Statistics said that a formal review would begin early next year. In the U.S. there has been talk of cutting costs for census taking by merely sampling the population rather than doing a complete census. Additional information about the British plans can be found at http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/uk/article3107949.ece. I wonder how future genealogists will like this? 2. Michele Skehill
    3. These items may be of interest to all. They came from the current Avotaynu newsletter: Some British Jewish Marriage Documents To Be Indexed The Jewish Genealogical Society of Great Britain (JGSGB) and the United Synagogue have reached an agreement whereby JGSGB will index the synagogue's Marriage Authorization documents, up to and including 1907. The content of the documents changed through the years, but they can include the names of bride and groom (both in English and Hebrew), current address and birth place of bride and groom, and date and place of marriage. The total project will take many months, but to date more than 3,000 have been indexed. Hopefully they will be placed on the Internet shortly. Additional information can be found at http://www.jgsgb.org.uk/Marriage_Authorisations.shtml. Plan to Digitize all Dutch Jewish Gravestones An Israeli organization, Akevoth, and the Nederlands-Israelitisch Kerkgenootschap (Organization of Jewish Communities in the Netherlands) have undertaken a joint venture to film all the Jewish tombstones in The Netherlands and place them on the Internet at http://www.stenenarchief.org. The site is currently in Dutch; an English version is under construction. A lot of my London ancestors originally came from Holland, via where-ever. Holland always seemed to me a stopping place for lots of Jewish people. Michele Skehill Toronto, Ontario, Canada

    1. Re: [BRITISH-JEWRY] denization papers
    2. Sherry with Sky
    3. I think you have answered your own question. As with almost every other kind of record, it tends to be the later (closer to present day) you get, the more information you obtain. Death certificates for example, now give precise DOBs. Prior to this (some time in the 1980s I think) they had YOB, before that the age. Same goes for marriage authorisations, now they have all sorts of details, but in the 1870s and 1880s a single line appeared for provincial marriages (those outside London) which simply stated the names, date, venue and minister. I have no experience of 1811 denizations but it seems logical if censuses only counted heads, denizations would be pretty basic too. See http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/RdLeaflet.asp?sLeafletID=242#7 which will probably not help at all, but it's all I could find!
