    2. MavAlan Shaffer
    3. Can anyone help please? I am trying to trace Joan WATSON and Suzanna STERN, 2 girls from Norwood who were invited by my Aunt Dora (Mrs. Zimmerman) for a holiday in Weston-super-Mare in 1947. The invitation was in response to a letter in the Jewish Chronicle of 6th June 1947: 'Holidays for Orphans, Appeal for Accommodation'. My sister Joyce and I also stayed with my Aunt at this time. I believe the girls were 11-12 years old. With thanks for any information. Mav Shaffer (Mavis Morris) Redbridge, Essex __________________________________________________________ Sent from Yahoo! 1. [BRITISH-JEWRY] LAZARUS c1801 - c1836
    2. Janis Currie
    3. It was suggested to me by a list member on the London list to join this list, as my distant family have a Jewish possibility. I have found a few entries (and been advised of 1) on the Great Synagogue registers. My question is this: I have tracked down some of my LAZARUS family, 1 of which I have received the birth certificate. It shows he (Judah LAZARUS) was born 5 White St, Houndsditch Parish of St Botolph, Aldgate 21/2/1838. On all census up to and including 1861, all children are born in the same place. I realise I need to see registers for the siblings born prior to 1836, which are: all LAZARUS Ralph c 1831, Mary c1832, Clara c1832, Lewis c1833, Morris c1836, John c1803 (father) and Sarah LYONS (mother) c1801. Not having found any of the above persons in the Jewish registers, what is my next possibility of locating registers? Another question: A son of Judah LAZARUS, shown on the British census Emanuel LAZARUS born c1881; I have been unable to locate his birth in freeBMD's, actually it doesn't recognise the name Emanuel or any variation, any suggestions please would be appreciated. thank you Janis Currie

    3. The 1881 British census does not list Emanuel; more than likely he was born after the census was taken. Also, siblings Jacob, Leah, Ralph and Samuel are listed on a second page with the surname "Judah". Should have been Lazarus; probable census taker error. 3. Dear Shelly, For what it's worth, I am here searching The Leeds Synagogues lists on the names GOODALL/REIF /REIFE. The only imformation here are marriages of Goodall siblings, one of them ROSE, whose father was Adolfe. Plenty of burials at New Farnley. About Edinburgh, I have never been able to find any on-line imformation about Jewish marriages including that of my own parents (elopement) One has to go to The Registry Offices in Edinburgh,in person, apparently. Edinburgh is a small community. There was a Reife family there in the 1950's. 3. I have a personal interest in the parlous state of Bancroft Road cemetery as my 3 x great-grandfather was a member of Maiden Lane synagogue and may have been buried there (although with the lack of records, I cannot find out). Following the recent mailings on this list on the subject, I contacted a researcher who is a member of another list (and who may be known to some BJ-ers) to find out if he had any more information. He has kindly agreed that I can pass on his thoughts - he is a frequent visitor to the London cemeteries as he is active in organising visits there, and he entirely endorses what has been said: "It's due to, from all that I have deduced over the years, the non staffing and non maintenance of the grounds. Four times a year visits, for example, would be acceptable by the community - at least it would look as if someone cares - even if the descendents of those interred, do not ! Closed cemeteries would be non viable propostition to keep open for any shul's burial society - so they deteriorate and are vandalized. Granted that the synagogues take exorbitant fees, old and closed cemeteries, especially the above mentioned closed ones are at the bottom of the pile in the priority stakes - even though some have reserved plots even after all these years. You would have read my e-mails, over the years, complaining about the closed gate policy with the east London grounds - "Health and Safety rules" - literally ! We are not allowed to wander around without supervision - and that's why genealogists aren't welcomed these days en masse. Yes of course it's OK with me for you to pass on my thoughts - hopefully there is someone out there, who could take up the baton and help me with said drum banging!" BJ-ers are not alone - there is a lot of concern out there. In my e-mail to my correspondent, I mused that it was scandalous that Judaism should mandate burial rather than cremation, and then allow its cemeteries to fall into such disrepair. Leaving aside respect for deceased ancestors, other historically important sites are required to be maintained and preserved, so why not these? Beverly Bergman Camberley UK

Hi Janis, The names you have are almost certainly the English names used as equivalents for the Hebrew or Yiddish names the children would have been given. You have Judah, which is a Hebrew name (and who may have been called Lionel). I suggest looking for the others as follows: Ralph - Raphael Mary - Miriam Clara - apparently, according to one website on Hebrew names, Clara, meaning "clear", was a Yiddish name. I doubt it is originally Yiddish, but may have been commonly used. Lewis - Levy, or possibly Eleazer (which one would expect to find in a LAZARUS line as they are the same name). Morris - Moses John - Jonathan, Jonatan, Yonatan Sarah - is a Hebrew name, so she might not have another. Hope this helps. Eve Richardson (In Toronto, also researching LAZARUS)
