How do I go about finding the registers for the early 1900's through 1970. I have addresses for Jacob BARNETT for 1927 and 1929*. I think I can find one for the 1960's. He died in 1970. BTW, he was commonly known as "Jack Barnett," so I will be checking under that name too. Thanks. Brian *1927: 65 Western Street, Swansea, S. Wales 1929: 18 Victoria Terrace, Swansea, S. 1. Re: [BRITISH-JEWRY] Immigration & Naturalization Question
    2. Sherry with Sky
    3. Firstly, not everyone naturalised. Secondly, if he did it will be in the National Archives, unless it got lost. Regarding the first: did he naturalise? It's hard to know on that time frame, but what you could do, if you have any addresses for him is to check electoral registers. These are done by ward (voting district) and then by street. So, you need the exact street address (from the marriage certificate and from birth certificates for any children etc). If he appears on the ER he was eligible to vote ergo he was a British citizen. NB Women didn't get the vote till 1918, in the first instance. NB Women were naturalised along with their husbands and dependent children. If he naturalised: Try alternative spellings, names etc. Also, the papers are indexed and dated by when they were returned NOT when they happened. I was told by someone at TNA that sometimes papers dropped behind the filing cabinets because they tended to stack things awaiting them being returned. He said that occasionally you'll find a paper dated X for a naturalisation that took place decades earlier, so don't be too hung up about the dates. I can't believe there is only one Jacob BARNETT naturalisation, so he could well be there somewhere, just not where you thought or when you thought. Thirdly, you could try for alien registers during WW1 (or oaths of allegiance). If he fought he would have at least sworn an oath of allegiance. The other thing you could try is for his military records if you are sure he fought. 3. Have lost the dates on this thread. Don't know if this will be of interest to you Louise. I have a Jacob JACOBS, Clothier, c1777-abt.1846 on the family tree His wife was Hannah and they had children Moses, Rosey and Fanny and maybe a Priscilla (ABRAHAMS). No doubt there were other children but gone before the 1841 Census. There is a Great Synagogue marriage number GSM 075/2 6 dated 2 Feb 1803 between Jacob JACOBS - Jacob ben Meir P"M (Parnis and Manhig) and Hannah bat Aharon from Frankfurt am Oder. If you need any more information let me know. 2. Alfred and Louise
    3. After a very frustrating day getting my computer clogged up with trying to send photos of the play i was in yesterday, I think , at least, I have struck lucky with Kitty Jacobs, or am I too hopeful? Something might be working today!. I tried out a variety of her name on the 1841 census with Jacobs and Israel as surnames and Kitty and Catherine as first names. Suddenly I found a Kitty Israel aged 22 lving with Betsy Israel aged 7 and 10 Plough Court, St. Clements Dane Westminster. The registration area was Strand. Now Strand was the same registration area for 3 Partridge Court and the area in which she was married in 1843 to Jonah Silver , PROBABLYat the Maiden Lane Synaoggue. Could this Kitty Israel be Kitty Jacobs? Could Betsy be the Betsy Cohen that one of her relatives in 1940 , wrote to my Aunt about. There was a Bess Cohenliving at 48 Smith Street, London East who I was never able to trace at that address. Am I clutching at hairs. Has anyone any otherlines I can e xplore. Thank you all in advance, Louise

    3. Dear Debbie, Yes I agree with you. Her first son by Jonah ( who later called himself Israel) was called Jacob. I am ging to try to get her first husbands death certificate and see what that says. I wonder who lived at 3 Partridge Court in the 1841 census. I cant find Catherine or Kate in taht year. Maybe she was a newly arrived immigrant when she married.. 3. Louise I think its the case of when she got married the person who was writing the father's name just took her present name as if she was a nee. Hence Jacob Siliver, when she remarried to Prince and then Jacob Prince when she re-married to Marks. I assume her father was either Jacob Jacobs or she took her fathers first name as her surname when she married. There are a number of Jacob Jacobs or Jacob (with a description of their job or where they came from ) in the Great Synagogue records. Her father was not Jacob the Pen Cutter, he came from Holland but I will have a look through to see if I can find any likely candidates.
