    1. [BRITISH-JEWRY] ABRAHAM COHEN DE LARA AND THE CRAWCOUR FAMILY
    2. phillip KIRBY
    3. Following a recent visit this week to the Society of Genealogists I met my distant cousin Debbie ( of the Jacobs line and Stornaway fame). I also discovered new data in the Colyer Fergusson collection relating to the connection between the Abraham Cohen De Lara family and my Crawcour relatives. In the will summary of 1830 recorded by Colyer Fergusson he records Abraham Cohen de Lara of Batty St Commercial Road leaving bequests to his wife Mary and daughter Simha wife of Isaac Crawcour and her 8 children. Abraham also left bequests to his grandaughter Dinah wife of Moses BARNETT and grandaughter Maria daughter of Joseph JOSEPH; niece Jael? Coronel wife of Isaac SEBAG and nephews Moses, Jacob, and Aaron CORONEL.There was a further bequest to the Portuguese Synagogue. I hope this information maybe of relevance to some listers. 2. David L Levy
    3. Phillip, I have some Jacobs-Levy connections, e.g. John Jacobs, son of Eleazer, who married Rachel Levy, daughter of Moses, in 1851. We also suspect a tie to Lewis "turnpike" Levy, though not proven. The cast of names in his will is almost identical to those on my line. Lewis had a brother David, if I recall? Do you have a family tree you could share of the Turnpike branch? Thanks, David Levy

    3. THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!!!!!!!! This is a godsend. Even when I don't find "my names" I find the Old Bailey records helpful in establishing what Jewish life was like in that era. And I've gotten remarkably far with finding "my names." Also, I hope this will make people more familiar with these records--any time you discover a new street name, surname, etc--run it through the search function and you will often get a picture of your ancestor's neighbors, if not the actual ancestors. 1. [BRITISH-JEWRY] ADMIN B-J News deadline
    2. Sherry with Sky
    3. The deadline for the next B-J News (Purim 2008) is this Sunday 2nd March. This is a final reminder for anyone who wishes to submit an article etc. I have a feeling at the back of my mind that I suggested to someone (off-list) that we announce/publicise something they asked me about. I am afraid with all my mail problems I have lost/forgotten who it was and what it was-so can they contact me again. Finally, we are planning to reproduce a couple of quite long threads that we found very interesting, that have appeared on list over the last few months. I will contact individuals involved to confirm your agreement to inclusion. This is just a "heads up". Thanks Sherry

    3. Thanks Sherry for the death date. It was actually Janie's sister Minnie, Jack Dorman's second wife, whose death you have. It didn't show up in the JC index when I searched for Dorman, so having the date enabled me to find in in the 9th April edition. 3. I don't have this, at all, Miriam. I have: Louis WINTER married Eve FRIEND on 22 Aug 1883, at Gt Synagogue Leeds. Their son, Leon WINTER married Lily COHEN in 1910 at Louis Street Synagogue, Leeds. Lily then married Abraham RAPHAEL in May 1915 at Gt Synagogue. 3. Hi Angie, I am almost back ;-) I see others have answered giving you: 1891 census details; clarification of 1901 census (Murray Freedman has his own code and uses M for male instead of M for married which can be confusing). information on his wife Janie DOVE. I can add a bit more. The marriage was announced in the JC (14 Sept 1906). His full name was Jacob Solomon DORMAN. he naturalised in 1904 (JC of 6 May page 27) and he died 20 March 1954, buried UHC Gildersome, Leeds. Janie died 2 April 1965, she's also buried in Leeds. His father was Benjamin DORMAN. As well as sister Florry, there was another sister Fanny, who was born about 1869 and married Julius LIEBERMAN in 1887 in Leeds. 3. Hi Peter, You can see where Chiswell Street is on the following map: http://www.londontown.com/LondonStreets/chiswell_street_46e.html#MAP The old building of BP was on Ropemaker St and Moor Lane. I believe part of BP is still off of Ropemaker St, but closer to Moorgate (in that big square?). If I remember right, very windy! There was a Brewers on Chiswell Street - Whitbread, I think. Possible at 52 Chiswell Street. If you are interested, Chiswell Street met Beech Street at Whitecross Street, where I used to live. Sundial Court seems to be at 38-42 Chiswell Street 41 Chiswell Street seems to be part of the old Whitbread brewery. I did like going pass there, especially when they were brewing - you could really smell the hops. I used to love watching the big Shire horses pull the drays - the stable would have been opposite the actual brewery. I don't know how long the brewery was there for, but I believe a very long time. Some history of Whitbread Brewery can be found at: http://www.whitbread.co.uk/index.cfm?id=our_history Enjoy Michele Skehill Toronto, Ontario, Canada where I wish winter was over! ----- Original Message ----- From: "Peter Nelson" <pne25074@bigpond.net.au> To: "british-jewry" <british-jewry@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, February 24, 2008 4:00 PM Subject: [BRITISH-JEWRY] London Addresses > HI, > I heve several Certificates for the Nelson Family which give the > residential address of 41 Chiswell St London In 1854 Or thereabouts. > Qestions > How do I ascertain ownershio/leaseholding for that address ? > Does anybody know where on the St it was located and what it is now? > Perhaps it was bonbed duing the war? or perhaps as been rebuilt as a > business. > Any Ideas on how to get more info apprecited. > Peter Nelson > Sydney > Our website is at > www.british-jewry.org.uk > We update regularly.
