They have a marriage of a William George Morton taking place in the 4th Quarter of 1845 at Shoreditch, vol 2, page 420. There are a number of choices for the partner (as that entry contains about 5 couples). However, I would plump for Sophia CUFFLEY as Sophia is close to Salome (which may have been a familar name, rather than the name she was given at birth). I hope that this helps. If anyone would like to submit anything on this theme (or any other) please send to jewish@slanda.fsnet.co.uk The issue will not be devoted entirely to the theme, so if you have something else feel free to submit it. Previous submissions include, jokes, announcements, book reviews, Internet site recommendations, research stories, successes, failures, brick walls, how to... or almost anything. Submission deadline was published as 27th July, but I am moving that weekend, so I am asking if people can submit by 20th if possible, or email me and let me know and I will try to "fix something" to make sure everyone is happy! 3. Hi Sheila, a well known commercial site (not the big A one) has the regimental BDM lists. I found some of my missing ones there (born Malta and South Africa), though I didn't end up needing to get the certificates. It might be worth trying a look up for the marriage there, as you suggest the groom William George MORTON was in the British forces (as he was 'stationed' there). The certificate should give - as a minimum - the brides surname! Regards Lesley Melbourne, Australia

    3. We have been searching for ages for our GGGranmothers Maiden name. As someone already asked you a similar question and the answer was to order a childs Birth Certificate, but the child was born in Gibraltar and we haven't been able to find necessary numbers to order Cert. My GGG's name was SALOME and left several cyrilic language books when she died. We wondered if she had been born Jewish, she spoke German at home. She married ( not sure where) her husband, WILLIAM GEORGE MORTON was stationed in Gibraltar in the Army and their daughter ELIZA was born there in 1848. They went back to the UK and SALOME died in Briton Ferry and was buried in NEATH Glamorganshire, in 1851. Forgive me if this is a too awkward request but we have to try everything, don't we? 3. Please tell us why you think Salome was Jewish. Cyrillic is Russian and could have been used by anyone living in Russia. Also, there were German farming settlements in Russia where they still spoke German. These settlements were not Jewish. 3. Are you saying that you are looking for the maiden name of Salome, mother of Eliza MORTON, born abt 1848, in Gibraltar? If so, Eliza's birth certificate should give that information. The birth certificate will be registered under the appendices to the GRO Index. Beyond the England and Wales returns there are other returns for things like consular and army events. If William MORTON was in the British army at the time of Eliza's birth he would have had to have registered the birth with the army. Try somewhere that holds the normal GRO Index on film/fiche. Certificates must be ordered centrally from ONS in Southport, as there are no locally held copies of entries. The other thing to try is William's army records which should be available from The National Archives at Kew. It should state the date and place of marriage and the births of any children... best, Sherry On 17/04/2008, Sheila Dixon <sdi39142@bigpond.net.au> wrote: > We have been searching for ages for our GGGranmothers Maiden name. That might disclose where he was posted prior to Gibraltar and where he might have married Salome. Salome appears to have been a very popular name in the UK in the 1840's but I have never previously come across it in Jewish records Angela

    3. Hi Steve, You don't say if you have your grandfather Lewis's birth certificate? That would give you his mother's maiden name. That in turn would tell you if the Isaac LEWIS/Betsey EMANUEL marriage in 1875 is the correct one and would enable you go backwards with more confidence. In any case it can sometimes be easier to find a "missing" marriage if you have two surnames to search on, rather than just the one. 3. Angie, I don't think the sending of long gen reports on specific individuals is of general interest. I can't do it and then moan at other people for doing it! Gen reports are definitely an off-list item. If the recipient then wants to paraphrase and let the list know what other names they found from it i.e. "re COHEN I now know that other families involved were LEVY, SMITH and BLOGGS if anyone thinks they have a connection feel free to email me" that's fine for the whole list. So, will you paraphrase for the list? 3. Hello Geneva, from frosty Viersat, France! Welcome to the list. Yes, you are exactly right, one of the main purposes of the list is to share such information and see if we can get a solution between us. I think you have enough to make what you have told us reasonable as a hypothesis. I understand your need to verify a bit more though. I have a couple of questions: Do you have a) the marriage authorisation and b) the burial of Isaac LEWIS (AKA Charles)? The former would give the patronymic. The gravestone, assuming there is one, would confirm the same. The birth place York...is that the city or the county? If you have been using the LDS index of 1881 they have a nasty habit of mixing counties up with cities. At one time, almost a quarter of the population lived in Yorkshire! Also: Elizabeth's mother is Amelia and you say Charles' eldest daughter was also named this. I would check forward for Barnet & Amelia and try to establish if she died before the birth of Amelia (d/o Charles) HTH, let us know how you get on, because I am sure most people would be interested. 1. [BRITISH-JEWRY] Seeking inspiration in my search for Charles and Elizabeth LEWIS
    2. Steve Lewis
    3. Hello from snowy Geneva, Switzerland. I'm a newbie here, so I hope it's appropriate for me to share here my challenge with my research on my great grandfather's parents. To explain the problem (and to help me walk it through in my own mind), I've summarised here what I know. My great grandfather was Lewis Lewis and in the 1881 census he was 2 years old living with his parents Charles and Elizabeth at 141 East Rd, Shoreditch, London. That tallies with what I've been told by one of his nieces - that he was born on 1 May 1879. My father once told me that his grandfather had brothers called Moss and Mark and a sister Amelia, so again, I'm fairly confident that's him together with other siblings Barnet, Abraham, and Joseph. His father is Charles, a fruiterer aged 36, born in York. He also appears in the 1891 census (as Louis), and again in the 1901 census, where his father, Charles, seems to have suffered some amnesia and was now born in London. Depending on the year, Elizabeth's age is 6-8 years less than Charles'. In the 1871 census, the only Charles Lewis from York of the right age is a "Traveller in Pictures" lodging at 8 Mount Street, Whitechapel. So if this is the right Charles Lewis, I need to find his marriage to Elizabeth between 1871 and 1877 when his oldest child Amelia is born. Of course, there's no record of marriage in East London between a Charles Lewis and an Elizabeth between 1871 and 1877, so here's where my challenge really starts ... My hypothesis: I know that Lewis Lewis also had a son called Charlie. I know that Charlie's real name was Isaac, so is it possible that Charlie was named after his grandfather Charles, and similarly his his grandfather was really called Isaac? Searching for a marriage between an Isaac Lewis and an Elizabeth between 1871 and 1877 in East London gives a possible candidate: Isaac Lewis marries Betsey Emanuel in mid-1875 in the City of London. The marriage certificate reveals that they were married at the Great Synagogue on 18 Aug 1875. Isaac is a Traveller (match 1: for "Traveller in Pictures") and his father is Levy Lewis a Commission Agent. His and Betsey's address at the time of marriage is the same (perhaps they are already living together, or boarding with his in-laws?) Betsey's father Barnet Emanuel is a fruiterer (match 2: Charles' entrée to the trade, perhaps). Betsey is now only 4 years younger than Isaac (can I count that as match 3: is it really so suprising that unlike him, she got "younger" with age). You can probably see that I feel like I'm clutching somewhat at straws - can anyone reading this see any way that I could verify my hypothesis? If I'm on the right track, I seem to be home and dry with Barnet. 6 years earlier in the 1881 census, he and daughter Betsey (Elizabeth in the census) are living at 18 King St. Elizabeth's mother is Amelia (match 4 for Charles' oldest daughter). 10 years before that, in 1871 (when Barnet[t] is an orange merchant) and in 1861 (when Barnet is an orange dealer), they are living at 9 King St. However, having stetched credibility as far as I feel I can to find Charles's marriage, I've now hit a dead end with Levy Lewis - no trace of him or Isaac/Charles' birth in Yorkshire in around 1844. A family rumour says that the name Lewis was derived from Levy because Lewis was a better name for trading. I can imagine that Charles Lewis was a better trading name for a Traveller in Pictures than Isaac Levy. But my searches on Isaac or Charles Levy have proven no more fruitful. So if anyone reading this can offer me some inspiration, I'd be very grateful for any suggestions on where to look next and whether, in your collective experience, I have already looked too far in my search for a solution. Steve Lewis
