    1. [BRITISH-JEWRY] MYERS/ISAACS FAMILIES
    2. Angela Wilkinson
    3. Hi Sherry Thank you for your response. According to the Leeds Burials Peter Simon (Philip) MYERS was buried at Hill Top Cemetery in 1889 at the age of 78. His wife Charlotte MYERS died in 1902 at the age of 85. These dates immediately differ from the ones they give in the censuses - but given what must have been 'great ages' for the time in which they lived...... Now to the ISAACS. I have two families headed by an Emanuel ISAACS, the question being which one did Charlotte MYERS nee ISAACS belong to. My starting point is her marriage in the Great Synagogue, Dukes Place, London to Peter Simon MYERS in March 1838. In the Census of 1841 and living at Fishers Alley Emanuel born about 1791 wife Catherine 1796 Benjamin 1821 Elias 1826 Hannah 1826 Sarah 1826 Rachael 1829 Maria 1831 Henry 1831 Julia 1834 In the Census of 1841 and living at St Mary Axe Emanuel Isaac(son) 1786 (the addition of 'son' being a transcription error) wife Maria (nee Magnus - Census 1851) 1796 Esther 1819 Joseph 1821 Caroline 1823 Whilst the Census of 1841 was just three years after Peter Simon and Charlotte's marriage, neither address is the ones on the Marriage Certificate of No 1 Union Street, Bishopsgate Street, or her spouses address of 4 Grove Street, Commercial Road. I would love to be able to establish which family Charlotte belonged to. With regard to the MYERS (father Simon and son Peter Simon) I have no clue as to where or when they arrived from Poland, the name of the town they came from, or what happened to their wife/mother. Peter Simon's father Simon MYERS failed to fill in any census form and I have no clues as to whether there are any other family members. I await any thoughts or direction. 3. Hi Angela, I am not sure if this will help but have you seen the burial record for Peter? Meanwhile explain to us about the ISAACS family. I have: Menachem ISAACS with wife Miram (surname unknown) and the following children (although I can't be sure they all actually belong to this Menachem, so your help would be appreciated in sorting them out): Charlotte 1820-1902 m. He died 9 Oct 1876. I can't locate a death notice in the JC online archives, but I think there would have been one, because later there are memorial notices.... I need the list of children (seeking married names and locations) one would be Gertrude BROWN and another Leah BROOKS. Thanks for any help. Sherry (Salford, LAN) ------------------------------ Desperately hope I've done this correctly - first time and all that. Sorry about delay. I have family down from Adelaide Marks, 2nd daughter of James, if that's of interest/help. She m. Solomon Abrahams and subsequently died in childbirth in South Africa with 4th child, also Adelaide. Do you know where her mother Sarah Marks, nee Marks, was born, apart from Surrey? Acc 1871 census James' children were Josiah, Gertrude, Adelaide, Isobel, Ellen, Leah, Louis, Amelia, Samuel, another daughter. 1. [BRITISH-JEWRY] MYERS/ISAACS FAMILY HISTORY
    2. Angela Wilkinson
    3. This is my first attempt at posting, so please forgive any errors. I have been researching my family history for a while now but have come to a full stop. The earliest record is of Peter Simon MYERS (later Philip) and Charlotte ISAACS marrying at the Great Synagogue, London in March 1838. Peter Simon MYERS (and his father Simon MYERS) state they are from Poland but where and when has so far evaded me. But sometime after his birth in 1817 and their marriage in March 1838. There is no trace of Simon MYERS in the census of 1841. As for Charlotte ISAACS, in the marriage certificate her father appears as Emanuel ISAACS. However, I can find no record of her birth in the Great Synagogue records but from the census believe it to be 1821. Therefore I have been unable to confirm which (of two possible Emanual ISAACS in the approximate time frame) is her father and therefore am unable to place her in a family. The MYERS were a family associated with the boot trade and moved to Leeds between 1838 and 1841, with a short spell back in London. Whilst I have traced the family forward, I am seeking information on both the MYERS and ISAACS families before their Marriage at the Great Synagogue, London in 1838. Any information or advice would be gratefully received. Angela Wilkinson OTLEY, ENGLAND

    3. thanks to everyone who emailed me and for the replies in this forum re Shul's and Jewish SE London. I will be going to a couple of SE archives in due course, but have since learned that that branch of the family started off in Whitechapel, moved uptown, and ended up living in SE London. But I'm curious to learn more about SE London where they were all the same. Thanks everyone, B.Shiel - London

    1. [BRITISH-JEWRY] Slightly O/T Help with Dutch 1851 census
    2. Sherry in France
    3. If anyone can help me figure out the Dutch 1851 census please can they contact me OFF-LIST (although these people ended up in UK). To give you a head start: Judah s/o Jacob WARRADIJN (spelled WARRADYN in UK) can be found in 1851 census of Amsterdam with DOB 4 Aug 1824 POB Amsterdam (http://www.dutchjewry.org/search/search.htm) With him are Celine (Sellije) and Elisabeth born 1849 and 1850 respectively. So far, so good (apart from the fact they appear more than once, which is confusing me).... However, where is the mother/wife? There was another daughter (Anna in English so probably Anne in Dutch) born c1852. Judah's wife was Esther Henrietta born abt 1831 Holland (not sure where). Judah died before 23 May 1867 when Esther Henrietta married Mayer BLANCKENSEE of Birmingham. To confuse matters (or possibly keep them tidier) the three girls went on to marry 3 of Mayer's sons! My only thought to Esther Henrietta being "missing" in 1851 Dutch census is that she could be enumerated under her maiden name-so that's why I need an expert to tell me how to find her! All help welcome, but as I say, off-list please. Hope to hear from hoards of you soon, Best wishes, Sherry Landa (23170 Viersat, France)

    1. [BRITISH-JEWRY] ADMIN Out of Office messages
    2. Jewish Admin
    3. For those who do not know you CANNOT use automated out of office messages and remain subscribed to this list. It's one of the drawbacks of using your work email for private business (i.e. belonging to lists). In case you don't understand why: Every time an email comes FROM the list, your automated reply goes to EVERYONE on the list (that's more than 250 people). If you do not have the option (or have not set the option) to send the automated response just once to each address, it just keeps happening over and over again. It clogs the archives and annoys the living daylights out of those of us who don't honestly care if you are in or out of your office. If you leave yourself subscribed and put an automated out of office message on, you will be unsubscribed manually by me, with much huffing and puffing, because it is NOT my job to manage your subscriptions for you. You are welcome to resubscribe again when you return to your office (or work out how to switch the automated response off on your email programme). If you want to leave an automated response on whilst away then the correct thing to do is unsubscribe from the list. Thanks for your understanding. Sherry Landa (23170 Viersat, France)

    3. Hi Bea In the 18th and 19th centuries, there were Jewish communities in Southwark, Newington and Richmond upon Thames (formerly in the county of Surrey, now part of London). The following web links may be of use: 18th century Anglo-Jewry in Richmond: http://www.jewishgen.org/JCR-UK/Community/local_research.htm#richmond Congregation of Borough Synagogue (in Southwark) from 1823: http://www.jewishgen.org/JCR-UK/London/borough/index.htm Many individual references to Jews are found in sources such as Quarter Sessions (QS) records and Poor Law records which are often (usefully) indexed!. Surrey Poor Law records and QS records are held at Surrey History Centre in Woking (http://www.surreycc.gov.uk/surreyhistorycentre). 3. Thank you so much foryour information which I will follow through. I saw the film. It was mainly about the chorus who took their clothes of and my Aunty Betty was not in that part of the show. She was also in oneof the first Tel avision recordings in the 30s and in films made by the Ideal Film Company when she was a little girl. Perhaps someone has heard of that company. One glorious Friday night, after dinner at my grandmother's flat, she got upf rom the table and taught me how to do the charleston.A skill that I have shown of for many years!. 3. Dear Listers, since we are onto musical theatre, I wonder if anyone knows anything about my aunt Betty Hart whose stage name was Betty Burke. Born in about 1909, she was a child actress singer, having studied with Terry Freedman in Cricklewood. Betty was a dancer/singer ( called a soubrette in those days) and the leading lady at the Windmill Theatre until about 1935. Years ago I saw a book of newspaper cuttings so they must exist. She was also in pantomime in Dublin. She was a wondeful lady and singing and beautiful till the day she died. Could anyone suggest any archives for more informationas I am writing a book about the family.
