    3. Debbie Bozkurt <debbieinscotland@googlemail.com> seeks help with the following query: I am searching for anything on my Great Grandfather Moses PHILLIPS (born Mile End, LONDON) , I know the basic dates, wife and children but nothing about him. He died before any of my Immediate family was born and my Grandfather who was 20 when his father died, also died before I was born. Lived as far as I know in London all his life. There is only one photo of him which my mother rescued from her very eldery aunt's (by marriage) bin together with a young picture of his wife, this could have been lost forever. This picture of my Great Grandfather was taken between about 1895 and 1900 ish ( I think)when he would have been in his early 20s, he looks relatively young if you discount the huge moustage. He is in military uniform, a Sergaent I think. Can any one tell me what uniform this was and if there is a list of pre World War 1 Jewish Soldiers anywhere. I have search National Archives and he is not there but if I knew the Regiment it might narrow my searching. I live in the Outer Hebrides so I do my research mostly on line. Any help gratefully received. Please see http://www.british-jewry.org.uk/New%20Member%20Area/Digital%20View/digitalview.htm and remember to reply to list so everyone can see the responses. Thanks Sherry

    3. Hello Ron, You asked about Sir Eli Nielsen. I have not been able to find anything about him either, but did a quick search to find death record of his mother, Trude Rosenberg/Neilsen. > Subject: [BRITISH-JEWRY] Sir Eli Nielsen >>> She died in England 29.9.1972. I don't know exactly where...How can I find >> her death record?.> I've checked the death records for England for the date you gave. Nothing under either Rosenberg or Nielsen. Where did you get that date? Are you sure about it? I am sort of surprised that there is nothing on the web about a peer of the realm. Most of them seem to have lots written about them. What is your connection, if you don't mind me asking? Also Nielsen is a Scandanavian name - have your tried in that area? Good luck, Miriam Pollak Cambridge

    1. [BRITISH-JEWRY] British Jewry Book of Honour
    2. John Gallon
    3. Today I had the good fortune to look at book printed in 1922 entitled "British Jewry Book of Honour 1914 to 1918". Whilst at Tyne & Wear Archives, Newcastle upon Tyne. This book contains every Jewish serviceman (Army, Royal Navy & Royal Air Force) who fought in WW1. There are chapters on Bravery Awards, (for the higher awards their is précis on their heroic deed)War Dead (this includes their last known address) and service personnel (including the dead) by Force (Army Regiments, Navy Air Force) they were in. This chapter is a benefit to researchers as it mentions the Battalion they were in. Plus the Navy personnel has the name of the Ship they served in. There is a chapter on Jewish civilians who made valuable contribution to WW1 in their particular field, for example Nurses. The Final Chapter is photographs, mostly in memorium and they name indexed. It has a lot group photographs of personnel who survived the war. Although entitled "British Jewry" it also contains Jews from Canadian, Australian, New Zealand & South Africa. There was only 3,000 books printed. But it worth checking to see if you have relatives who fought in WW1. There is lot more information in this book than I have mentioned. I was lucky enough to able to locate details of my Great Grandfather. He was wounded & survived the war. But sadly his records were destroyed in 1941. But now I know which Battalion he was in. And this will allow me to find out a lot more on him. A book I definitely recommend to read especially the chapter on Jewish Chaplain Diary. 3. Hello Listers I've just found a listing in Harfield's 1891 Commercial Directory of the Jews of the United Kingdom for an A. Cohen. The listing is headed Strangeways and reads A. Cohen, 37 Briddon St, Hat and cap manufacturer. What relation is Strangeways to Briddon Street? My husband's ggrandfather was Abraham COHEN who in 1891 resided at 6 Johnson Street, Cheetham. He was a hat & cap manufacturer. I'm curious to find out if anyone knows whether it would be likely for someone working in Briddon St to be living in Johnson Street, Cheetham. Does that make sense? I'm trying to verify if this is 'our' A. Cohen. Many thanks. Naomi Barnett Melbourne, Australia

    3. Dear Louise, I too have cause to wonder about this family. I note that they almost certainly changed the surname to MARTIN. This seems to be the case with Hannah Martin who married a Philip Solomon And had at least one daughter called WELcome. I cant't find any birth or anything fo Philip, save for the fact that he was married in the GS. Welcome was born in 1837 and became my ggm. I recall being told as a child that the name comes from the Potugues Name BEMVENIDA (or welcome in English) This was the name of Hannah's Mother who was married to Aaron Nunes Martines. I have not been able to work out much more as both families Solomon,Martin and Nelson were all in the habit of following custom and naming offspring after another family member. If you need any further info please do not hestate to ask. As for the home in Gravesend I have not seen this but would be interested in trying to work out this enigma Kind Regards, Peter Nelson,Sydney

    1. [BRITISH-JEWRY] Dove Martines in Gravesend
    2. >I wonder if this place was some kind of Jewish orphanage... as I cant think why there should be so many small children from different families living into his place. Does anyone have any answers.< Per Malcolm Brown's in depth study "The Jews of Gravesed before 1915" Transactions of the Jewish Historical Society of England Vol XXXV ".... private schools proliferated at the seaside...." And writing in particular about what attracted Jewish Parents to the Jewish boarding school at May's Place Gravesend he speakes of "....the medically attested soundness of the water, the curative properties of fresh air, the absence of any recorded epidemics in the immediate area....." So if not a school, perhaps a sanatorium for sick children? A very quick scan of this lengthy article has not revealed anything relevant to Dove Martin\Martines but perhaps a look thru local trade directories or newspapers might produce an advertisement? 1. [BRITISH-JEWRY] Dove Martines in Gravesend
    2. Alfred and Louise
    3. Dear Listers, I have been trying to disentangle a mystery lady called Dove Martines, or Martin Nunes Martines. I have been working with the Bevis Marks records and there are three. The one I am researching is probably the daughter of David and Sarah Nunes Martines born in about 1798. who may have ended her days in the sephardi alms houses in Devonshire Street, E. However, I found another one in the 1841 Census at Star Street, in Milton Gravesend , Kent. With her she had various sisters, Hannah, Abbey, Sarah and Rebecca. All the Nunes Martines and Abendana families gave their children the same names! Dove was 30 in this census but living with her were various small children including Celia Abendana aged 9 ( probably my great grandmother Sarah Celia who married Michael Hart) and her sister Esther aged 5. I wonder if this place was some kind of Jewish orphanage... as I cant think why there should be so many small children from different families living into his place. Does anyone have any answers. with best wishes, Louise (London) researching NUNES MARTINES,RODRIGES RIBEIRO. ABENDANA, HART

I am trying to verify a time of arrival in England for an ancestor Heinrich (aka Henry) SAMUEL/S.  Heinrich was born around 1817 in Germany.  He married (date of marriage not known) a Chanah (aka Hanna/Hannah)SCHELINSKI , born 1834.  They emigrated to England but we don't know if it was before or after marriage.  Their eldest child, Fanny Eva SAMUEL/S was born in 1852.  I am trying to obtain a birth certificate for Fanny Eva.  They went on to have 4 more children Louis (1854), Joseph (1861), Leah (1863) and Rachel (1867). We have all the information about the marriages etc of Fanny Eva and all her siblings but determining where and when Fanny Eva was born would be marvellous. Fanny Eva married Abraham Rose in the Hambro Synagogue in 1872 and we have the ketubah. Any suggestions?  I wondered if the book recently published by Harold Pollins might have this birth registered.
