Good morning (I am properly awake now). I have just updated the Look Up Exchange. If you have something you can do for our community, let me know and I'll add it. http://www.british-jewry.org.uk/New%20Member%20Area/Look%20Up%20Exchange/look_up_exchange.htm Reminding you that I move in 4 weeks and have asked for submissions for the next B-J News to be submitted earlier rather than later. So, if you have something, please submit it. Remember, it's your newsletter so it can contain what you want it to. If you've made a connection we especially like successes, but equally if you are stuck on something, feel free to write about it. Book reviews, recommendations etc are also welcome. You can mention things that AUP doesn't allow you to mention on the list. As B-J News is on the website, non-members read it. We regularly get feedback from non-members who have found us through it, and often they join us because they like what we do. So, get writing! Submissions (as *.doc files attached to email, please) to Jewish@slanda.fsnet.co.uk if you don't get confirmation of receipt within 24 hours email me (without the submission) at sherry.landa@wanadoo.fr as fsnet can be slow to process mail. Any relation to Jack Zeitlin, born Jul 1899 in London, who married Ida Gelber? David
Hi I'm trying to trace back my maternal grandparents. My grandfather was Elsley Zeitlyn, born in London in 1878. Died in 1959. I have his obituary from the jewish Chronicle and also the information my mother has given me, which isn't very much. I would like to know more about his wife. I think her name was Maria Neucorn and that she was from Poland or Germany or Holland. She had a sister called Sophie who died in one of the Camps. My mother had a cousin called Bob Spier who lived in Holland..that is all I know and some of it is a bit sketchy...can any one help. 15th January 1840, Harriett Myers, Father Ralph Myers, Brides Address, 17 Middlesex Street, Aldgate, Groom, Emanuel Isaacs (wdr), Grooms Father, Simon Isaacs (dec), Grooms Address, 95 Middlesex Street, Whitechapel 1841 census Emanuel ISAACS 60, coal dealer and Harriet 24 in Petticoat La., with what could be brothers Henry 70 and Godfrey 60 HO107; Piece 717; Folio: 17; Page: 1; This is the only one that fits. All the others are the wrong age etc. I found these in 1851 too. Harriet's sister is with them proving she was Mayers (the census spelling). No children but young niece and nephew. Class: HO107; Piece: 1524; Folio: 13; Page: 19; Can't find them on the 1871 census. Maybe Emanuel died and Harriet remarried? Assume you can see the censuses from the references, Angela, if not email me off list. Sherry (bit less sleepy now, in Salford, LAN)
Hi Carole, A friend called me , who also gets these emails, and suggested this may well be her. I know dates can be transcribe wrongly or it could be a typo on the tree. I would guess that Gertrude would have been correct, but I could not see that she would have been given the name MARY at birth. That does not sound like an Austrian Jewish name. She may have taken that onboard at a later date, especially when she met/ married Eli Nielsen.. If there is a transcript available of that record, I would be only 2 happy to pay for a copy. I do have Trude's family going back 3 more generations. What I am trying to Achieve is finding Eli, my guess he maywell be alive , he would be 83, or his wife Pamela who is 73. I have that they had 2 sones Mark and Michael, both apparently born in Fiji. in 67 and 68. There are currently no Nielsen's listed in the Fiji white pages. My tree ends there, and I am looking to update it, Thanks for your help. Hi Naomi, Please tell the list what research you've already done so we do not duplicate your efforts. Have you checked the usual sources i.e. censuses, GRO index, etc.? I know the descendants of Harriett m. David Barnett, does anyone know the descendants of Enamuel Isaacs m. Harriett It looks as if you need to find Emanuel ISAACS and Harriet in the subsequent censuses, Angela, so that you can rule them out/in. Not sure how easy that will be. John, Was there an index of all names? Could it be posted on the Internet? Some relatives thought my wife's grandfather, Jacob BARNETT, found for England in WWI, but we have no evidence of that. I wonder if that book is available in the U.S. Who wrote it? Who published it? Brian Neil Burg Fullerton, CA, USA In a message dated 6/25/2008 2:19:50 PM Pacific Daylight Time, little.blobby2@btinternet.com writes: Today I had the good fortune to look at book printed in 1922 entitled "British Jewry Book of Honour 1914 to 1918". Whilst at Tyne & Wear Archives, Newcastle upon Tyne. This book contains every Jewish serviceman (Army, Royal Navy & Royal Air Force) who fought in WW1. There are chapters on Bravery Awards, (for the higher awards their is précis on their heroic deed)War Dead (this includes their last known address) and service personnel (including the dead) by Force (Army Regiments, Navy Air Force) they were in. This chapter is a benefit to researchers as it mentions the Battalion they were in. Plus the Navy personnel has the name of the Ship they served in. There is a chapter on Jewish civilians who made valuable contribution to WW1 in their particular field, for example Nurses. The Final Chapter is photographs, mostly in memorium and they name indexed. It has a lot group photographs of personnel who survived the war. Although entitled "British Jewry" it also contains Jews from Canadian, Australian, New Zealand & South Africa. There was only 3,000 books printed. But it worth checking to see if you have relatives who fought in WW1. There is lot more information in this book than I have mentioned. I was lucky enough to able to locate details of my Great Grandfather. He was wounded & survived the war. But sadly his records were destroyed in 1941. But now I know which Battalion he was in. And this will allow me to find out a lot more on him. A book I definitely recommend to read especially the chapter on Jewish Chaplain Diary. Thanks to Debbie and Sherry who, between them, have gven me enough data to confirm that there were indeed two consecutive Brides listed by the Secretary of the Great Synagogue with same\similar names. Once again the List rides to the rescue of floundering researchers. Angela
>8th January 1840, Harriet Myers, Father Andrew Myers Deceased, .......15th January 1840, Harriett Myers, Father Ralph Myers, Thank you Debbie. That matches civil bride to civil groom very neatly and answers one part of my query. But still leaves me wondering whether there was an original error by the Synagogue Secretary which would have resulted in the error being perpetuated in the civil registration - since his entry in the Synagogue Register would have been used for the civil. Two consecutive Leah Cohens, more than likely - but, two Harriet Myers? I know the descendants of Harriett m. David Barnett, does anyone know the descendants of Enamuel Isaacs m. Harriett Angela
Thanks to the quite extra-ordinary gifts of South African genealogist, Paul CHEIFITZ, the MICHAELS boys, Joseph & Jacob, fleeing from their Jewish heritage, have been rumbled. Joseph stayed Joseph, called himself MITCHELL on the Embarkation Formof SS ADRIATICA, married an Irishwoman called Helena with one son, setlted in Lyman, Essex County, MA. They both worked for G.E. His younger brother, born Jacob, became John Edward, also married Jenni, had 4 children (yet to be traced) He worked at Watertown Arsenal, nr. Boston. After 12 years of fruitless searching, I have scaled another BRICK WALL. Thank you Paul & thank you Genners. And thank you to the nameless subscription website, whose collection of Draft Cards, Censuses & Public Records found my family. Now to trace those children, who have NO idea they have Jewish blood. If anyone has a copy of Harold Lewin's Great Synagogue Marriages, could they be kind enough to look up two marriage in January 1840. According to my own transcripts, the Synagogue Secretary has entered an almost identical English name - Harriet Myers\Meyers - to two consecutive brides. The Hebrew name is also the same Tsipora or Ziporah but the patronyms are different [my refs GSM 349/29 8 Jan 1840 and GSM 349/29 15 Jan 1840] Both names appear for the GRO Mar Quarter of 1840. It is impossible to tell whether this was a remarkable coincidence or whether the Synagogue Secretary made an incorrect entry A transcript of Harold's entries for both marriages would be helpful Angela Shire
There is a military list on Rootsweb which I have found very helpful. There is a truly fascinating article in the above number of the JEWISH CHRONICLE, written by 'Genealogist' which I urge you to read. It describes, enumerates & comments on the many name changes our ancestors in the 19th. Century decided to embark on: very interesting, most revealing of attitudes & assumptions of those days. I have downloaded a pdf version of this which I will email on request. Donations to Jewish Care would be appreciated! Best- Miriam Margolyes 75342.3217@compuserve.com Kuala Lumpur
