    3. I take it you mean marriage 308/61 on 30 Aug 1835? This is the only one I could find with the right couple, although I had to check all the Philip SOLOMON marriages before finding this one. The transcript (thanks Angela) says she was a widow, is that what the "unknown symbol" is? She was daughter if Aaron NUNES MARTINEZ. HTH Sherry (23170 Viersat, France) I have a file taken from the register for the marriage of Philip Solomon to Hannah Solomon I do not understan the symbol in front of the bride forename does anyone know ? 2. Kaufman, Heidi
    3. Dear List, I'm looking for information on the early nineteenth-century Jewish writer named Maria Polack. She lived in the East End of London, and published (as far as I can tell) one novel, _Fiction Without Romance; or The Locket-Watch_ in 1830. I do not have a birth date, but I know that she died in 1849. Maria Polack was married to Lipman Polack. She was daughter to Ephraim Polack. Does anyone have any information on this family? Best wishes, Heidi Kaufman kaufman@udel.edu

    3. Thank you Susan. This is a wonderful formula . Dear Listers, I have partly accomplished my mission. On Friday I printed out on 160 gm cream paper the Ancestor report for Yonah which went back about 10 or 11 generations on different sides including his maternal grandparents and great grandparents. I did it in boxes and it covered about 12 pages. The pages were stuck together with double sided tape and now fold down and sideways into one size a 4. I then did a Report from his ancestors on the Rodrigues Ribeiro : Hart: Gelbberg: Cohen from S. Africa sides. and joined them up so that they opened down. I fitted them all into a nice plastic see through button down envelope. As I have so much more to put into the tree, this will have to be updated and I will also put the whole tree onto a CDRom or a memory stick for him. I didn't have enough time to sort or to paste photographs but managed to put a small photograph with double sided tape onto the Grandparents etc tree. These were of my parents and one set of grandparents. It was all a bit of a rush, but there will be more to come. What was lovely today was to be with all the children ( except my daughter in US who is coming next week) and young cousins and grandchildren, for lunch and tea for Yona's Jewish birthday. The house was full of family, not only on paper but lively, in and out of the house and garden. On Monday he will be called up in our synaogogue for the first time. With many thanks for your help a;nod suggestions, Louise thank you everyone for your help and suggestions, With best wishes, Louise.--- Original Message ----- From: "Susan McPhedran" <smcphedran@sympatico.ca> To: <british-jewry@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, July 25, 2008 1:12 PM Subject: [BRITISH-JEWRY] Putting down family tree > > I have only produced one "family history" book. 3. Thank you Josev and everyone for your help. I have decided to do two things. One is to take a descendents Report going back with grandparents etc and adding photos, onto stiff paper and joining the pages ( about 10) in concertina form tape. I will insert photographs as well. the second is to make a CD with the whole tree as well as reports on separate families plus photos and my diary of my grandson's bartmizvah here and in Israel. Eventually I will extend all this in my book which I have already started writing. 3. Dear Evelyn, thank you so much for your advice. I have , all of a sudden, been overwhelmed with so much material from relatives whohave only just come upwith material that I have been awating a long time. I have have decided to just do the immedite ancestors,( parents grandparents, great grandparents printed out on card and joined like a conertina book ( as a birthday card) and then I will go further afield on a CD as you suggest. I thinkit will end up as something for the moment and then something more adventurous when i have the time. I like the idea of photos of the event, especially as it will take place in Londonand jerusalem with familycoming from all over the world. I could write a kindof diary. My mind is begining to develope the project beyond the tree. with best wishes, Louise > > >

    3. I have only produced one "family history" book. It was for my grandmother's 100th Birthday Party in 1995. It turned out surprisingly well especially since I was a real newbie then. I handled the research and collecting photos (easy part) and wrote the text (hard part) and then shipped everything to my sister who produced the book. She did an amazing job matching photos to text and used a software package that made the whole thing look very professional. My recommendations Put in lots of photos Put all the lists at the back - all the begats, the census details, family charts, etc. Only hard core family history nuts are interested in those. Try to come up with a theme or thread that ties all these people together - it will make writing the story easier. My next book will be for my husband's family. His mother refers to the family background as Heinz 57. In any event, he comes from a long line of wonderful cooks so it will be a cookbook - with recipes tied to the various branches from around the world. Quite an inspired idea - now to actually do it. Find the most technically capable person in the family to help. These days you can also produce a DVD with the photos, music and voice over. Good luck, Susan McPhedran Ontario - where we are having a very English summer - rain, rain and more rain.

    2. To be honest, I dont try to give my grand children all the info. Only what is relevant to them personally and will encourage them to start exploring. To do this I used a cd. Your use of Dorot has always been a problem as you are a small minority in the UK. But one can get software that will create a website from an exported GEDCOM. I am assuming you can export either a gedcom or a website from Dorot? The website with its links is what you put on a CD. Kids have computers and understand about clicking on links, so they enjoy this sort of material. One can put on a small tree and then add as many images, photos and documents as might be of interest. be sure to name all the photos. Dorot tech people should be able to tell you of a program that will handle your Hebrew entries, but using HTML on a disc would make this easier, I imagine. You ask what other people do. I start with the child's direct ancestors, (for a younger child I only show the 16 great great grandparents.) plus the relatives they know, their aunts, uncles and their cousins. I kept the detail to a minimum - just showed major events, where the people lived and their occupation, plus a picture. Using a CD means there is no limit on images and you could add a folder of census images, if you wished. You could add anyone coming to the Bar Mitzvah and anyone famous or notable. I added young men killed in World War 1. For a family reunion I used the same method to hand on all my info and images about one particular family, but for a child, all you need to say is that, if they would like all one's information, they may ask for it. if you are worried that your complete work might be lost, you can add a complete GEDCOM export file to the same CD. I hope this is of help. Evelyn Wilcock London Genealogy site at http://members.aol.com/ecwilcock/

    3. Hi Louise, as far as i'm aware, the only way you could do your tree on one long continuous sheet of paper would be to use a dot matrix printer ( quality not so great ) which i believe is the only thing that will take continuous folded sheet paper right out of the box. dorot as far as i know is only of use for inserting jewish dates, you'd be far better off using a more conventional program that many others have used or use, so we can help you further, and then importing that data into dorot to get dates etc, just a thought and observation. regards Josev

    1. Re: [BRITISH-JEWRY] name variants, how to find them
    2. jeremy frankel
    3. Dear Genners, In Naomi Ogin's email, she mentions a web site that is a listing of various name spellings for Freedman. The topic of name changes is one that has both fascinated and frustrated me, as I'm sure it has you too. On an academic note, I had always wondered how many variants there could be for a name and where could one find such a list. Eventually I stumbled across Avotaynu's Consolidated Jewish Surname Index, which does fill this need with one caveat. What the CJSI has done is to create an index based upon the names appearing in a large number of books. So yes, it does rather depend upon whether "your" name (or a variant) is in one or more of these books. So go to the Avotaynu web site (www.avotaynu.com) and click on the last listing on the right hand side bar (Search Jewish Surnames). Enter the name of interest and what you will get back will be the Daitch-Mokotoff Soundex number plus all the variants of that name as they appear in one of the books. Like every method, it isn't foolproof, but it did give me some choices as to how Brookstone might have been spelled in the old country. And last Saturday when researching at my local Family History Center, I showed it to a JGS member and it helped her with a very unusual name.
