    1. [BRITISH-JEWRY] WOOLF/JACOBSON FAMILIES: RIGA/LONDON/MELBOURNE AUSTRALIA
    2. Hi everyone out there, just wondering whether anyone has any familial links to these families, or has noticed them in their trees etc? Hyman WOOLF ( Chaim Zalman ben Yehuda) and His wife Betsey (Borvitz) (Bayla bat Nachum) resided in Whitechapel in the 1870's with a number of children. (WOLFF 1871 CENSUS) >From BDM documents here in Melbourne, they appear to have come form Riga, Courland Gubenia or possibly Golding, all within the Latvian area, but at that time confused for Russian Poland. Their eldest daughter Freida , anglisized (Fayda Yehudit) married Samuel Barnett Jacobson ( Shmuel ben Myer) at the Great synagogue in London in dec 1875. His father is shown as Myer and mother shown here on BDM as Pauline, obviously anglisized. Father unknown. Hyman and Betsey emigrated here in the late 1870's to Melbourne via it appears Dunedin New Zealand where a child was born and died here in 1877. Hyman and Betsey died in 1882 and 1891 respectively. Fanny and Samuel had many children, Myer being born in London in 1876. Alexander may also have been born in London . Other children, Raie, Rachel, Pauline, Annie. Fanny and Samuel arrived here in about 1882. Fanny died in 1919 and Samuel in 1962. I have just recently visited their stone which is still readable , in the Brighton cemetery. Documents obtained here indicate Myer Jacobson being a manufacturer , it appears caps . Myer married Lilly Aarons from Leeds in 1903. They also had many children. Lilly died in 1950 and Myer in 1962. I have connected with a desendant in Western Australia , via ancestry.com and she has verified information about this part of her tree. Yiddish was spoken and my grandfather Tobias WOOLF was the son of Hyman and Betsey. D-M soundex methods seem to indicate that the original surnames would have been close to the anglisized versions, with Jacobson probably being JACOBOVITZ. Betsey's maiden name appears to be part of this name, so the may have been a connection between the families having come form the same shtel or nearby. Many of the causes of death appear to be cardiac and hypertensive in origin, with some strokes as well....definitely a family trait. Does this jog anyone's memory??? Any assistance would be welcome. I will be in London in october. thanks again Esther Kahn nee WOOLF Melbourne Australia researching lewkowicz/czestochowa poland woolf/ jacobson/riga.courland/golding/latvia /london/melbourne // altman/czestochowa/dzialosyn majerowicz/kamyk/nowa wies/czestochowa /

    1. [BRITISH-JEWRY] Worms in Birmingham
    2. lesley
    3. Hi all. I have been aware for some time of a story that suggested that 3 Worms brothers migrated from Germany to England around the 1790 period. I feel pretty confident that I have located two of the brothers Hyam aka Henry, and Aaron Worms in London . However I have recently started looking for the possible 3rd brother, and the name that keeps popping up is Lewis Worms who was based in the northern city of Birmingham. Although the name Lewis is one that repeats in both Hyams and Aaron's descendants, & the surname Worms (relatively unusual in itself) ,combined with the fact that this Lewis was born in Germany (as were the other two) in the right time frame, would seem to suggest a link, the fact that he was based in Birmingham seemed to negate (in my mind) a familial connection. However, since this is the only chap that seems to be remotely possible, I was wondering if anyone had any knowledge of this Lewis?? His daughters married men with very Jewish immigrant sounding surnames, so I suspect that Lewis and his children remained faithful to the Jewish faith. I was surprised to see though that this Lewis had actually married in London to a London girl and believe that the following is their marriage entry in the Great Synagogue London ' 29 April 1823 Layman WORMS Asher Lemly s of Abraham married Ann ABRAHAMS Shprintsa d of Yehuda Leib' GSM 217/29 I am no expert on theses entries but the two other Worms grooms are listed 20 years earlier as "Hyam s of Leib Cohen (ttl)' and Aharon s of Yehuda Cohen (maven - title - Priv'd Member), which don't seem to me to marry up with the Lewis Worms entry. Any information regarding the Birmingham Lewis Worms would be really welcomed, as well as any input regarding the wedding entries Regards Lesley Champion Melbourne, Australia

    1. [BRITISH-JEWRY] Seeking Boaz NIEWOLSKI descendants
    2. Natalie Lamb
    3. I am writing to ask for some help in tracing living members of a large and long-lost branch of my family tree. I would be delighted and very grateful to hear from any descendants of Boaz NIEWOLSKI who was born in Kolo, Poland in 1851, and died in London in 1940. He married Sprinza Isbitski (also known as Betsy) in the Great Synagogue in Duke Street in 1876 and they had 10 children. He worked as a boot finisher, and for many years he and his family lived at 33 Great Garden Street, Whitechapel, where Betsy also had a chandler's business for a while. They are buried in East Ham cemetery. Boaz Niewolski was my grandfather's older half-brother, and so far as I can tell he was the first person from the Niewolski family to arrive in England. Many of his descendants changed the family name to NEVILLE. Other names that occur through marriages among his descendants are LASSMAN, HENDRICK, LUBIN, ISAACS, BLOOM and LEE If anything here sounds familiar, please contact me privately at natalie.lamb@btinternet.com Kind regards and many thanks, Natalie Lamb (nee Neville) Berkshire, England

    3. Hi Stephen, Lilac Terrace most certainly did exist. It ran off Regent St (at 111 Regent St). http://www.leodis.net/ has photos of Lilac Terrace amongst which is this one http://www.leodis.net/display.aspx?resourceIdentifier=2002424_6052798 which might save an unsuccessful day trudging round Leeds looking for a street that no longer exists. If it is any consolation, if it had survived as a street it would not have looked as it did then! If I can be of further help, I have a database for Leeds but with a name like LEVI/LEVY I need a DOB and parents' names and DOBS for find the right Rachel, email me back. Best wishes Sherry (23170, Viersat) There is some confusion over the grandmothers name- Rachel Annie Levy (or Levi, the spelling is unclear) but the family is clear that she lived at 28 or 33 Lilac Terrace, Leeds. I've tried to find this Lilac Terrace on modern maps, but according to GoogleMaps, Streetmap and the Royal Mail, no such place as Lilac terrace exists any more. It appears in historical records (such as the 1901 census) as being part of the Central Ward of leeds, in the Sheepscar, St. Luke parish of the city. I suspect its either a local name for a terrace on a better known street, or one that has been demolished or renamed over the years. While the grandmother has passed, my friend (her grand daughter) would very much like to visit Lilac Terrace (if it still exist) and photograph it for her elderly father. If anyone in the Leeds community has the local knowledge to guide her that area, both the family and I would be very grateful.

    2. brian whipp
    3. The Hannah Solomon Peter Nelson refers to may be Hannah MARTIN (Nunes Martinez) born 19 December 1797 to Aaron MARTIN and Dinah COHEN. According to the research of Joan Holness, a Hannah MARTIN married Samuel LEVY in 1819. Samuel died in 1832. I have no record to show if this Hannah remarried. However, Hannah SOLOMON(S) is shown living in the 1851 census with husband Phillip and children at Stoney Lane (South side) Aldgate, London. (Index shows her as born Germany but record shows born Goodman Fields.) One child Abigail age 20 matches with Abigail MARTIN born to Hannah and Samuel LEVY and a niece Dinah MARTIN living with them might match to a Dinah born to Isaac MARTIN and Deborah LEVY. Isaac and Deborah died 1843 and 1844 respectfully. Trust this is of some help. 3. thanks sherry, I was hoing to be able to find her first husband but the maiden name Nunes Martines does not help much as there seems to be very little on her family. I know from the one birth which I can trace (Welcome Solomon) b 29 dec 1878 that Hannah is listed only as Hannah Martin so name changes along the way seem to be one of the roots of the problem. I wonder if I could get the name of the first husband from the Ketubah .I habe not paid much attention to this in the past.Perhaps she was the wife of a relative of Philip's who died and the tradition of another brother Marrying her was done in this case? -again Many thanks for your help on this. 3. I have looked in one of the bevis Marks Book of marraiges and there are three Hannah Martines marriages. 17th August 1842 to David Mendes: Hannah Nunes Martin (Martines( to Mordechai Henriques Vallentine and Hannah Martin (Nunes Martines) to David Alvarez. I am not sure w;hat you have done previusly or who you are acatually looking for. She would not have been forced to marry her husbands brother because althoug it was required in biblical times, it is not relly permitted in modern times. How didyou find her name in the first place? Who si the one birth you can trace? A Child of hers? I am rather confused, Who is Phillip. Do you think that Hannah Martin married a PhillipSolomon? Could Aaron Martines have another name > Louise >
