There is a book available in the UK - "London's East End - Life and Traditions", by Jane Cox, Weidenfeld & Nicholson, London 1994. This book has quite a lot of information, not about our families, rather about the people and the area, and in places describes the various immigrations of Jewish people into the UK. I found that it cleared up for me the queries about when our generations may have arrived in England. They were pre-1800. Any ideas very much appreciated Regards John Meyers
Dear Babs, Just in a round about way. A Ralph Raphael of 21 Whitcombe Street, Haymarket was the person who in 1849 reported the death of my getc father Aaron Aarons. However Raphael Raphael died in 1845 so it can(t be him. Yet when I checked the will of Raphael I found that one of his daughters, Sarah married an Aaron Prins. This intrigued me since one of Aaron Aarons nephews Wolf Samuel also had Prins connections!!!! regards David Alexander Puycelsi Dear David, The people you mentioned are all on my family tree, do you have an interest in them? ________________________________________________________________________ AOL Email goes Mobile! Beverley Bergman, with her usual generosity, shared the link for this fascinating website with us. She was chary of pasting a long URL; no need to worry. Always go to www.tinyurl.com & for _free_ you can shorten the long URL to a sensible, easy-to-paste length. So the 128 letters for the Princelet St Syn. Registers is now http://tiny.cc/zqDYv Enjoy! And use again that www.tinyurl.com website for all such long URLs. Miriam Margolyes off to Chicago searching: AMIEL, PASEVITCH. SANDEMAN, LEWIS, JENKINS

< I am interested in the Sarfaty de Pinna family > Unlikely to be the same family, but with a similar sound - I have been trying unsuccessfully to trace a David Levin PINNER. He appears on the 1881 census for Sheffield as David PINNER, aged 81 (and he is NOT the father of Jane MARKS who is erroneously shown as head of household, but may be the step-father of her husband), and on the marriage certificate of his daughter Yetta PINNER to Simon ZOLKI, also in Sheffield, in 1864. I have heard an unconfirmed rumour that he later emigrated to the USA (as did his daughter after she was widowed at an early age) but further information is lacking. If he did, it would have been in extreme old age. All sightings of David (Levin) PINNER, in any country, gratefully received! Beverly Bergman Camberley UK
BJ-ers researching London families may be interested to know about a site which provides indexed and digitised copies of the Princelet Street Synagogue marriages register from 1897 to 1907. Go to www.ideastore.co.uk and then use the Search to look for Synagogue (the full URL for the relevant page is lengthy and would split up in an e-mail). Also available on the same site are the Bow Apprentices Register for 1803 and the Bow Poor Rate Book for 1820. My thanks go to a cousin in New Zealand for bring this to my attention! Hi I am interested in the Sarfaty de Pinna family, but mainly those in Amsterdam. My line goes back to Joshua Sarfaty de Pinna and Esther Cohen Farro, born in Amsterdam. I am already aware of all the info on the Akevoth website. However, according to a result on Google Books there is an article in 'Vol. 22- (1968/69- ) includes its Miscellanies, pt. 7- (1970- ) Page 141' containing information about them and then son Jacob. Its only a 'snippet view' and therefore tantalising! I am not especially interested in the branch that came to UK, rather those that remained in Amsterdam and or any information going back from Joshua Sarfaty de Pinna and his wife Esther. According to the cumulative index in 35 (1996-1998), Sarfaty appears in the following volumes: Sarfati Isaac XX1X p57 Sarfati Jacob XXVIII p155 Sarfati Rafael Eliezer XXVIII p153 Sarfaty Isaac XXVI p97 But no mention of the Vol 22. I do not have access to any of these and wondered if there was some kind person, as all B-J ers are, that could help me? Thank you! Regards Gaby Laws London UK
Dear Gaby, Don't know whether this is relevant but there is a lot of info on Abraham Sarfati de Pina (b. 1644) and other members of his family in Halevy "Biographisches Lexikon der Hamburger Sefarden". If it is relevant I can scan the entries. regards DavidAlexander Puycelsi France Hi I am interested in the Sarfaty de Pinna family, but mainly those in Amsterdam. For YESHERMOFSKY you could try YASHINOVSKY and variants? My YASHINOVSKY came from Knyszyn, near Bialystok, but sadly I have no known connection with KOPOVITCH or with the other names you mention. Elly (London) 2008/8/13 Ginger de Winter <ginger@flyingdutchman1.co.uk>: > I have a birth certificate for Simon, stating that his mother's > maiden name is YESHERMOFSKY.
Dear All I think I have found my grandmother, Freda KOPOVITCH (born Bialystock/) on the 1901 census. (Her surname could be KAPLOVITCH or a million other spellings). She is niece (19) (seems correct) in the family of: Lizzie 34 and Jacob 36 BORTNOSKI with Deborah 16, Lewis 14, Simon 9, Alice 3, Reene 5 months. I have a birth certificate for Simon, stating that his mother's maiden name is YESHERMOFSKY. I have no knowledge of those surnames. I cannot find them on Jewishgen. I cannot seem to trace marriages in this family on the big well-known website. Has anyone any ideas as to what to do next? I know my Grandfather Morris/Moshe Kapovitz had two brothers, Avraham and Meir (from the marriage Auth) but I don't know in which country they were. I know there was a relation here but my mother couldn't remember the name. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Ginger de Winter London researching ABELSON, ENGLANDER
Yesterday we walked for miles around the older part of Jewish London. It was a true goose bump journey. My ancestors came from Clerkenwell, Middlesex, Shoreditch and Bermondesy. A credit to our guide Louis. It all means so much more having heard and seen the places they lived. To those on this list who helped me get here. Many thanks John Meyers in Barnes for one more week
Dear All I am seeking a photo of the Matzevah at Waltham Abbey for Deborah STOOKIN - 22/12/1986 - Section 10, Row B, Plot 42. Please contact me on a1steve@bigpond.com if you are able to assist. If a photo is not possible, I am seeking a translation of her Hebrew name and that of her father. Many thanks. Dear Sherry and other users of the Jewish Chronicle Project CD - thank you for your continued use of this resource - it makes me feel proud to hear that you are still using it and finding lots of connections. For those who are interested, I have all of 1910 on my computer at home and would be happy to do any searches required. I'd just got to December 1910 when the whole project fell over. Does anyone out there have a project where they need someone to do some inputting of data? I have some free time which I would like to fill in a constructive manner? Kind regards, Miriam Pollak Cambridge, UK

It will also be a valuable source of reference for readers with more experience of the subject. If you are just beginning your family history and would like to know more, 'Tracing your Jewish Ancestors - A Guide for Family Historians' published in July 2008 by Pen and Sword (Family History) Books, will take you through the entire process of research. The book starts with a brief social history of the Jewish presence in Britain, with descriptions of the principal communities all over the country. There are links to the Internet, chapters on the Armed Forces and Jewish Heraldry. Simchat Torah was on Shabbat 2nd October and Sunday 3rd October 1779 If Sukkot (first day) fell on 15 Tishri 5540 [Saturday 25 September 1779] can anyone tell me the date that Simchat Torah would have fallen on in London in that year?
