    1. [BRITISH-JEWRY] Cemetery Project Update.
    2. Dear List Members, Over the sadly misnamed Summer months, we have made the following additions to our website _www.genpals.com_ (http://www.genpals.com) London Bancroft Road - Old Maiden Lane Synagogue Cemetery. 48 stones This cemetery, as has been noted on the List, is in a sad state of decay. Many of the remaining stones are severely damaged and frequently offer scant clues as to whom they commemorate. Any help with identification would be greatly appreciated Yorkshire Bradford Scholemoor Cemetery 34 stones. Thanks to Sherry for providing photographs and identifications Hartlepool Jewish Cemetery 19 stones . Thanks to Yaffa Phillips for the photos. Additional material expected very shortly Sheerness Kent Halfway (Queensborough) 8 Stones. There are two sets of photos. The most recent taken this summer by Gaby Laws. The previous set was photographed in January 2007 by Jeremy I. Pfeffer. and eagle-eyed researchers will notice a (plastic) flower has been placed in front of each grave. Since the date was a few days after Holocaust Memorial Day, it was thought this might be the reason but extensive local research has failed to find the mystery visitor or the significance of the flowers. Hope Street Old Burial Ground 11 stones Thanks to Paul Dummott of the Sheerness Heritage Centre (_http://www.sheernessheritagecentre.com/index.htm_ (http://www.sheernessheritagecentre.com/index.htm) ), Southampton University, and Jeremy I. Pfeffer But by far the most exciting news of the Summer is the addition of what we have dubbed The Fry Collection. Dr. Helen Fry, co-author of The Lost Jews of Cornwall': ed. Keith Pearce and Helen Fry, Redcliffe Press 2000 ISBN 1 900178 27 3) has generously made available her private collection of photographs. We cannot overestimate the value of this archive, nor sufficiently express our gratitude to her for making it available to the project. Wales: Glamorgan: Merthyr Tydfil Cefn Coed 12 stones; Pontypridd Glyn Taf - general views only; Swansea 14 stones Gwent: Brynmawr 1 stone Newport 1 stone Additional pictures for these and other Welsh Cemeteries will be very welcome. Devon: Plymouth Hoe Old Burial Ground 28 Stones Exeter 25 stones on site - and more to come............. Additional pictures for these cemeteries will be very welcome Hampshire Aldershot: 31 Stones. This cemetery has now been fully recorded*. We are particularly lucky in that Dr. Fry's photographs were taken not long before the cemetery was shockingly desecrated and many of the stones she recorded were irreparably damaged: a timely, if poignant, reminder of the importance and urgency of this and other similar projects.(*This does not include stones that do not come within our remit - ie: post 1927 - and which certainly featured heavily among those that were vandalised. Transcriptions of these stones can be provided to descendants on request This leads very nicely to our next set of records - due on a screen near you very shortly. The old Hoxton Cemetery was demolished in 1960. No photographs of the stones, or transcriptions of the inscriptions, were taken at the time. All that remains is a survey taken in 1929 and some articles in the Jewish Chronicle and we are using these to try to create a very limited record of London's 2nd oldest Ashkenazi burial ground. Our thanks to all those who have contributed photographs and helped with identifications and to all those who have taken the time to add their comments via our on-line contact facility. We value your support and welcome your input. Angela Shire & Gaby Laws

    1. [BRITISH-JEWRY] Barnard
    2. Dear List, Thanks to help from Ray I have had the luck to find a distant Barnard cousin. We are both descended from Henry/Hirsch Barnard b. Solomon Hamburger. My cousin through Henry's son Morris whilst I am descended from Henry's daughter Esther. There was at least one other brother Isaac Barnard who is recorded in Deptford between 1820-29. Is anyone else on the list connected with this Henry Barnard family? David Alexander Puycelsi France ________________________________________________________________________ AOL Email goes Mobile! 2. a1steve's rubbish removals
    3. Dear All A few months ago I posted about Jetty/Yetty CHERNOSKY who appears in the 1891 census as a cap maker, aged 24, sister. I have now found that this was Jetty's married name - her maiden name was TISHMAN(sp). The address at the time was 31 Church St, Bethnal Green and there is no mention of Jetty's husband nor of any children that belonged to her. The head of the house was Marks TISHMAN. I've done a bit of searching and the surname was probably CERNAUS/CERNAUSKAS originally. I know that the TISMAN's came from Lithuania. Just wondered if these names sound familiar? 3. I stand (or sit really) corrected! It's still very boring for those of us not in USA to have the conference there year on year. However, I appreciate it's not as straight-forward as it might appear. Sherry Little correction, Sherry. It was put off for Washington, DC. {:>) The conferences are sponsored by and large by the host JGS and it has been very difficult to get a JGS other than in the US to sponsor one. Even then, it's usually underwritten to some extent by the IAJGS. IAJGS would love to have more conferences in other countries and keep trying but it's a difficult task. The expense is huge and some JGS groups are too small to handle it.

    1. [BRITISH-JEWRY] Conference Behaviour
    2. > In every meeting I attended, phones rang repeatedly, they were answered (!!) & sometimes long conversations ensued.< Not only at Conferences but also in the Theatre. Kevin Spacey has (rightly) been very outspoken on this subject and the great (in every sense) Richard Griffiths stopped a performance of the History Boys to remonstrate with a persistent offener at the National Theatre. All the recent theatre performances I've been to recently have a very clear warning prior to curtain-up but even that can be ignored. And don't talk to me about sweet papers! Perhaps if Conference Speakers were to just come to a halt and not restart until peace and quiet be fully restored? Or sit down themselves and do the crossword or peel a banana.....? Anyway, Well said Miriam! Such ill-mannered aniti-social behaviour is totally inexcusable and it is up to all of us to put our heads above the parapet and stop excusing it Angela (aka Angry of Camden Town)

    3. Now Miriam, Please don't sugar-coat it, tell it to us straight :-) Having not attended the conference it's a bit difficult for me to judge, but accept your right to feel put out. As a middle-aged grumpy, myself, I would say all conferences over the years have started to become victims of this sort of behaviour. I went to one for work, in Huddersfield in June, which was not as bad, but certainly "getting there". Maybe the conference organisers should think about lockers and making people check everything into a locker before they enter the "talk". I guess it depends on the venue and whether that is a feasible option. As for Philly, well, I won't be there-I am disappointed that the supposed venue of Paris (the one in France) was put back for Philly. Paris is now 2012 which will be when London has the Olympics (not sure if this is brilliant or absolutely stupid). I am fed up with the conferences being in the USA year on year. Even the Olympics pretends to spread the venues out a bit (don't get me started on the Olympics, BTW). Oh well, doubt TPTB will read this anyway, so no use us moaning here! If I was in charge..... (saunters off mumbling to herself something which ends with ....and we would still have change from a shilling!) Best Sherry But one element of the Conference I hope does not recur. That is the ferociously bad manners of some of those attending. At the start of every lecture, those introducing were instructed to remind people to turn off their mobile phones. This was always done. In _every_ meeting I attended, phones rang repeatedly, they were _answered_ (!!) & sometimes long conversations ensued. <snip>

    1. Re: [BRITISH-JEWRY] Conference Behaviour
    2. Jackye Sullins
    3. I agree with Miriam about the behavior and will add my two cents (American expression). The conference was attended by many people from different countries and I found that this behavior was not at all limited to Americans. It seems that this was across the board and not country specific. I was also a greeter at registration and found people testy and demanding and not at all aware of what it takes to put a conference together. Complaints were heard about the smallest thing. It's also the responsibility of the introducer to make sure questions aren't asked during the conference but I didn't see that happening. Believe it or not, in previous conferences, this interruption went on constantly. I do think that particular problem has improved. However, I don't know what it will take for people to follow instructions and put their phones on vibrate. It was an excellent conference and I hope Miriam will relay her feelings to the next conference planners and the IAJGS who are the co-sponsors. Jackye Sullins > But one element of the Conference I hope does not recur. That is the > ferociously bad manners of some of those attending.

    3. The exciting fayre offered to us all at the Chicago Conference makes me long for the next Conference in Philly starting Aug 2-7 2009. See website: http://www.jewishgen.org/jgsp/2009Conference.htm But one element of the Conference I hope does not recur. People also walked in & out of the Meeting noisily during the talk stepped in front of the Projector thus obliterating the Speakers' Power Point presentations unwrapped sweets & bottles, masticating noisily talked & commented during the talk, drowning out the Speaker called out questions, despite being specifically asked to wait until the end talked through the (excellent) films shown The lack of consideration for other attendees, never mind the Speakers, was shocking & universal. I had never thought of Americans as impolite people, but this level of rudeness & crass bad manners, needs to be addressed. Maybe, cell phones should be jammed or confiscated & people ejected from meetings in future. If you know you're attending a talk, turn the phone off. It's not rocket science. Many of us are Senior Citizens, who should know better. I am 67, I need glasses, I often lose the plot. But I do know that when someone else is speaking & I am in an audience, I have to shut up. I hope the Philly Organisers will take note. Miriam Margolyes (born in Britain) 75342.3217@compuserve.com searching: SANDMAN (Grodo & Bialystok)Margolyes (and variants-Indura, Belarus)
