    3. Dear Genners, I don't think anyone has carried out a specific study, but I don't think anyone would have been posting notices in the 1840s in the Jewish Chronicle as it didn't begin publication until 1851. That said, there were very few BMD entries in the first 30-35 years of publication. It really begins to pick up around the 1890s and then around 1900 we see the JC featuring BMD notices on the first two then three pages of the newspaper. Currently in London but leaving early Wednesday morning. -- Jeremy G Frankel ex Edgware, London, England Berkeley, California, USA EBIN: Russia, New York, USA FRANKEL: Poland, London, England GOLDRATH/GOLD: Praszka, Poland, London, England KOENIGSBERG: Vilkaviskis, Lithuania, London, England, NYC, NY, USA LEVY (later LEADER): Kalisz, Poland, London, England PRINCZ/PRINCE: Krakow, Poland, London, England, NYC, NY, USA

    3. Phil, I'll see what I can find on the census records. The local JGSGW is going to Richmond VA in October and I'll see what I can find there. Do you know anything more about them? I've been doing a lot of work in the NY City municipal records although you have to go up to NY to look at them efficiently (The LDS has the indices on microfilm but you have to order the film from Salt Lake City at $5.50 a film, and the films each cover only a few months). Were they in NY City? 3. G'day all. I wonder if somebody would help me at their convenience. I am looking for somebody who may be travelling to Willesden (Liberal) cemetery. According to the Jewish Chronicle, Henry Morwitch died on the 10th of April 1907, and a memorial stone was set on the 20th of October 1907. I have no notion of the monument set by his wife Sophia, or a location for his grave. I would like a high resolution digital photograph of the grave of Henry Morwitch that allows us to read any inscription on the stone, and a wider shot of the whole monument. I have also been unable to ascertain the death details or location of burial of Sophia Morwitch, Henry's wife. The Jewish Chronicles ran a notice in the Wills and Bequests section in 1933 - "Mrs Sophia Morwitch, of 1 Madeira Court, Madeira Place, Brighton, who left estate of the gross value of £19,881, after making various bequests, left the residue of her property to the Brighton Jewish Synagogue subject to the erection of a suitably inscribed memorial to her husband and herself." Could somebody suggest a method or point of contact that might reveal this information or help me with same ? Also at Willesden (Liberal) cemetery, I have a friend who is looking for a photo and/or a translation for a Morris/Maurice Tisman – “born on 15 April 1899 and died in 1967 and his ashes are located Willesden, London.” – my friend thinks that means there is a plaque instead of a stone. Cremation date is unknown. Any and all assistance received with gratitude. Scott Morwitch Brisbane Queensland Australia

    2. Merv & Naomi Barnett
    3. Unfortunately I haven't had the pleasure (or otherwise) of attending any of the Conferences to date but have read with interest the comments made by others in response to Miriam's posting. Being a subscriber to the Jewishgen mailing list makes it very obvious most posters to that list feel it belongs to them and don't understand that many of the subscribers live in far-flung places. They are often surprised to find that Jewish people exist in places like Australia and even New Zealand. I have no beef with Americans at all (in fact some of my best friends.................) but have made this observation after about 10 years of reading postings on Jewishgen. Therefore it comes as no surprise that Jill Whitehead found some issues with the recent conference in Chicago. Naomi Barnett Melbourne, Australia However, I did think it was very parochial - International being taken to mean USA in a lot of cases.

    3. Hello, I have started a revamp of the website. Unfortunately, either my connection is too slow or the server is being silly or a bit of both. As a result not only is it going to take longer than I expected but it is also likely to mean a disruption to service. You might find that pages are unavailable when you try to access them or that they display oddly (things not where they should be or in funny colours you can't read). Also you will notice that some pages look different in style (formatting of theme) than others. At certain times hyperlinks from one page to the next might not work, etc. Please bear with me I am working as long and as fast as I can, but I am only human and so I err (quite a bit). Hopefully, it'll be worth it in the end! best wishes Sherry (23170 Viersat, FRANCE)

Yad Vashem, Israel's Holocaust Memorial Centre, has recently launched its own channel on YouTube. Testimonies from Holocaust survivors, archive footage and lectures on key issues are all available on the site. This should be an excellent source of visual images for Holocaust study, and is growing all the time. www.youtube.com/user/YadVashem. Jill Staines, Middlesex, UK

    1. Re: [BRITISH-JEWRY] Chicago conference 2008
    2. Carol Freeman
    3. I did not go to the Chicago conference, but our local JGSGW is beginning planning for the conference in Washington and I'll mention these concerns to the committee. I do have two comments on Jill's comments: first, I've been to many conferences of lawyers, and it always happens that two programs I'd like to attend are scheduled at the same time. I assume it's very difficult to schedule programs so that those of interest to a particular person never conflict. Second, I'm sorry you had difficulty with the presenter's accent - and, assuming the speaker wasn't foreign born, admittedly there are some regional accents that we Americans from the northeast may find difficult to understand, but then, again, some of us have trouble with some of the British regional accents. As to the sports analogies, the same comment holds - many Americans are very interested in sports and references tend to find their way into most conversations - our Rabbi is a life-long Chicago White Sox (baseball) fan and manages to refer to the team often in the fall (when the baseball world Series is held). But I'm sure British speakers make references to cricket and soccer (rugby?) that we wouldn't fully appreciate. One can never accomplish all one wants to do at a conference but I hope, on the whole, you found the conference worthwhile and will plan to come to our conference in Washington. 1. [BRITISH-JEWRY] Chicago conference 2008
    2. Jill Whitehead
    3. Unlike Miriam Margolyes, I did not have any trouble with mobile phones at the Chicago conference. However, I did think it was very parochial - International being taken to mean USA in a lot of cases. I went to two sessions which made me cringe - one a session on a new Polish ancestry (non Jewish) website- given by an American whose accent was difficult to understand and who constantly talked by making analogies to American football or baseball that Europeans would not understand. I also attended another session about so called Forensic Genealogy, again not to do with Jewish genealogy - which seemed to consist of nothing but a talk on US lawsuits - and which to me had nothing to do with what I understand by forensic genealogy. I thought the biggest problem with the conference was bad programming - too many similar things put on at the same time. I went to Chicago to research my Chicago family who had gone there from Liverpool in 1905 (after 30 years in the UK). A session on Cook County legal records (where again the speaker made analogies with American sports) was put on at the same time as one on the Newberry Library. If you wanted to use both resources, this was not very helpful. Another session on Chicago resources was put on at 7 (seven) am and did not provide me with any information on this - it was merely a question and answer session. Yet again, two sessions were put on at the same time on DNA - I went to the Jon Entine one (author of The legacy of Abraham's Children) which was badly attended compared to the Steve Morse one on at the same time. What surprised me the most was that so many similar sessions were put on in 2008 that I had already seen in London in 2001, seven years before. Surely the programme should be updated? I thought the 2001 London conference was better organised/programmed than the Chicago one. I gather a number of US delegates have made suggestions for change in 2009 to be more relevant. However, in spite of this, I thought some of the sessions were really, really good, it is just a pity that some sessions spoilt the overall impact of the conference. It would be better if there were fewer but better quality sessions, with some of the more obscure ones removed. But please could Americans remember that not all Jews live in America, and that not all conference delegates are American. I understand that Paris and Australia may be on the cards for future years - about time too.
