    3. I am sorry Judy, I can see that what I said was misleading ....i.e Rosetta was the daughter of Henry Isaacs of Oxford who had links with the Ansells of the Ipswich area ....as did *my* Isaacs ......what I meant to say was that my Isaacs also were in the Ipswich area at some point [ c. 1656 -1800 ] etc: etc: This was suggested by an article from the JC as there having been at that time an Isaacs' Clan' . This turned out to be somewhat misleading, but in fact the history books do support this conclusion to some extent ,given the presence of many Isaacs names at that time in that general East Anglian area. I have been researching a link with Henry Isaacs of Oxford ....as I have with Israel , ancestor of Rufus Isaacs. It just struck me from Anne Joseph's e-mail re: Rosetta Isaacs ,that the Windsor area was being significant for both my Isaacs & Rosetta's , in that Rosetta had links as did my GHD to both Ipswich & Windsor ; that perhaps this might explain the seemingly shocking[ to me] & random event of my 14 yr: old Rosina marrying 27 yr old GHD....in that the families might have had prior experience of each other, as suggested by the random juxstaposition of these facts ....[ Re: Rufus - above-GHD told my Grandfather David James that he was 3rd Cousin to Rufus Isaacs].... It is interesting in itself, that Henry Isaacs was Hirsch b. Moses Englander.....which should have made him Henry Englander.....as A.M Hyamson implies in his book A History of The Jews in England 'The Expulsion' was far more fluid than we currently imagine. A friend Brian Gomes da Costa & I are working on a theory[ as time allows] that would link each of these early Isaacs to each other & to this event. A major problem however, recognized by historian Todd Endelman[ to whom we have written of the above] is that there has been very little research .. due to the difficulty in locating primary sources for the interim period... as much of this interaction was probably clandestine. Great site Cherry ' Thank you ' ....no I have'nt seen it ....interestingly I notice that it doesn't even give Windsor as a Brushmaker location....the plot thickens ...again....isn't F/H fun!! Best wishes to all, Catherine

    3. Dear Brian, I found a dove Nunes Martines ( in the announcement) in the JC in 1883 sending thanks for condolences on the death of her sister Hannah Nunes Martinez ( with a z). There are several Dove Martines in the Nunes Martines tree an I am still trying to work out which one this is. My mother said she had a Sephardi Aunt Dovie who had a girls finishing school in Spain, but I have recently found the Martines sisters had a school in Gravesend to which my great grandmother Sarah Abendana was sent. I will try to findout more about Simon Davis as very often they intermarried and he could have had a relative Clara who he introduced to his wife's family. thnk you for that. I will contact you off the list about the missing pagae. thank you, Best wishes, Louise ----- Original Message ----- From: "brian whipp" <whipp@brian5441.freeserve.co.uk> To: <BRITISH-JEWRY@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, September 19, 2008 1:36 AM Subject: Re: [BRITISH-JEWRY] Aaron Nunes Martines > Dear Listers & Louise, > > Louise wrote: "I have a Singers prayer book given to Dove Martines by her > friend Clara Davis. 3. Thank you very much, to all who have responded to my ' cri de coeur '.... I think from your findings Angela , I must assume that though he may have been born at Windsor, his family lived elsewhere....now all I have to do is to track all the James Cohen's worldwide! Something that you wrote Anne, regarding Rosetta Isaacs.got me thinking..... James named his daughter Rosina & Rosina married my GG'father Gregory Henry David Isaacs....Rosetta was the daughter of Henry Isaacs of Oxford who had links with the Ansells of the Ipswich area ....as did *my* Isaacs . Rosina married GHD [ above] aged 14 , following her father' s death 2 yrs earlier at which time she had become an orphan....links between the families would make this more understandable I feel As I said ' it has got me thinking' & I will explore this further- thankyou... BTW does anyone know what a' brush maker' is exactly....would there be any associated records anywhere??? Once again thankyou to all , Best wishes Catherine

    2. Regarding the above posting. I am researching the name WOLFSON for a friend. Israel GALINSKY was born May 1917 in Leeds, son of Harris GALISKY and Sarah, formerly WOLFSON. I have Israel's birth certificate, but cannot find any marriage of his parents. There was a Leah GALINSKY born 1911 and her birth certificate has the parentage. Could I ask whether Sarah WOLFSON has appeared in your research? 1. [BRITISH-JEWRY] Part 3 - see parts 1 & 2 - KAISER, KING & ABRAHAMS
    2. Bea
    3. Please note - as this post is very long it is divided up into 3 parts. This is part 3, but please refer to parts 1 and 2 (which may be in this or the previous BJ digest) for the complete story. Thank you. To elaborate on my KAISER/KING branch of the family: Abraham Joseph KAISER, son of Arieh Yehuda (original surname not known as his stone wrongly lists Arieh's surname as being KING, the name KAISER was changed to), and his first wife Fanny/Friedel (maiden name not known) daughter of Za'av Ha Lev (or HaLevi), married before they came to live in the UK. The KAISER's/KING's lived abroad and in King Edward Road, St Thomas's Road and Victoria Park Road in South Hackney. Fanny died in south Hackney, London, in 1915, by which most of the family members surnames became KING, and Abraham married again before 1930 to Rachel COHEN. Rachel was most probably married before, but I have not been able to establish to whom, or if COHEN was her married name or her original maiden name, but her stone is at the end of the row in the cemetery and there is a COHEN symbol on her stone. I have not been able to locate any Hebrew or UK certificate of her marriage to Abraham KAISER/Abram KING. Abram KING died in 1932, and is buried in a double plot with Fanny in Edmonton Federation Cemetery - near to where Rachel's 1939 plot is too. Fanny and Abraham KAISER's children were: *Arthur Harry KING (known as Harry, who lived in Brighton with his wife Annie, and his sons Murray and Felix), who died in Brighton in 1927, *Annie KAISER, who died in 1961 in West Hampstead (and was buried with her husband Harry ABRAHAMS in Willesden. Their daughter Mimi/Muriel KING was buried in a triple plot with one of her siblings in Bushey. Annie and Harry's son Lionel BRAHAM married Hilda and they had a son called Stuart. Annie and Harry's other daughter was Rose who married Oswald Elman of Richmond), * Morris/Maurice KAISER/KING, who lived in King Edward Road, Bulawayo in South Africa, and died in 1929 in Bournemouth. (His wife Jane/Jennie died in London in 1942. Their children were Max, Mrs Annie BALL, Benjamin, Ralph, David and Geoffrey KING), *Mrs Lily HURWITZ (who lived in Victoria Park Road then in Johannesburg with her husband Maurice), *Jacob/Jack KAISER/KING (who lived in Hackney then in Cape Town, South Africa), *- Isaac KAISER/KING (who lived in Hackney, Southampton, South Africa, then Hackney again, then Toronto, with is wife Ray GOLDBERG and their son Marcus). Please also read the 2 previous posts - part 1 and part 2, but if there are any descendants out there, or if anyone knows when the above KAISER/KING family first arrived in the UK, where they were originally from before coming to the UK, or if and exactly how the above were related to any of the family surnames listed in the Part 1 post, I would be delighted to hear from you. 3. Please note - as this post is very long it is divided up into 3 parts. This is part 2, but please refer to parts 1 and 3 (which may be in this, the previous, or the next BJ digest) for the complete story. Thank you. To elaborate on my ABRAHAMS branch of the family: Julius ABRAHAMS and his first wife Deborah were from Romania or Poland, but with his second wife Esther, Julius lived in King Street in the east end of London in 1881 with their son Moses. Julius later had a son called Lazarus (Eliezer Dov), a traveller, who later became quite religious and Lazarus was at various times a boot maker, a cap maker, a furrier, and had servants. Lazarus married twice in the Great Synagogue - first to Leah daughter of Yehuda/Lewis KRUGGER in 1878 and they lived in Tenter Street North in 1881 with their daughters Rebecca and Julia. In 1883, Lazarus, now aged 25 and a widower, married Rachel ISAACS in 1883 at the Great Synagogue. Lazarus had 13 children (who didn't die) in London in total, and included Mrs Annie GOLDMAN, Mrs Julia SIMMONS, Harry (Harris - married to Annie KAISER), Isidore/Ezriel, Mrs Leah LERNER, Zelig/Solly/Sid, Dora, Julius, Isaac, Emanuel, Louis/Lewis, Jacob/Jack, and Rosie. Julius, Lazarus and Rachel ABRAHAMS were buried in Plashet. Please also read the 2 following posts - parts 1 and 3, but if there are any descendants out there, or if anyone knows when the above arrived in the UK, if and exactly how the above were related to any of the family surnames listed in the Part 1 post, I would be delighted to hear from you. This is part 1, but please refer to the parts 2 and 3 (which may be in this or the next BJ digest) for the complete story. Thank you. Apols for this very long post but I have hit a big, brick wall am hoping someone can shed some more light on 2 branches of my family, whose surnames were KAISER (changed to KING), and ABRAHAMS (also known as BRAHAM). I would like to try to find out 4 things: 1 - if there are any KAISER/KING or ABRAHAMS descendants out there who I could be put in touch with, who might know when these families each arrived in the UK, 2 - whether or how any of the KAISER/KING or ABRAHAMS family members were related to other families whose surnames were HYAMS and SOLOMON. 3 - where the KAISER/KING branch of my family came from before living in the UK (there are no naturalisation files). 4 - exactly how any of the ABRAHAMS family members, or how Abraham or Fanny KAISER/KING or were related to my Russian family whose surnames were SCHAFFER, SVIDLER, WOLFSON, and GOTHILF. >From 1906 till 1908, Abraham and Morris KAISER/KING, together with their relative Harry ABRAHAMS, were listed as being fish curers in the city of London, which they owned or managed, until they were made bankrupt by the High Court from 1908. Were any of them related to any of the following - Nathan HYAMS, and/or to either of his sons Emanuel HYAMS & Joseph Mitchell HYAMS, and/or to Joseph's son Edward Solomon HYAMS, the previous owners and fishmongers in either Artillery Lane or Artillery Passage? From the 19th century onwards, these and other HYAMS family members were buried in Brady Street, West Ham, East Ham and Plashet cemeteries. Were any of the KAISER's/KING's or ABRAHAMS's related in any way to the SOLOMON family (Samuel the fruiterer, his sons Edward, Frederick and Charles, musical composers, or to his grand-daughter Annette Sarah SOLOMON, a singer, who married Joseph Mitchell HYAMS the fishmonger)? From the 18th century onwards, the SOLOMON family members were buried in Maiden Lane cemeteries, possibly West Ham and Willesden cemeteries. Lazarus's son Harry ABRAHAMS married Annie KAISER in London in 1906 when her father Abraham KAISER was living in the Mile End Road. On his 1906 marriage certificate, Harry ABRAHAMS was listed as being a property dealer but in the directories and in the High Court in 1908, he was clearly listed as being a fish curer! Please also read the 2 following posts - parts 2 and 3, for further information about the ABRAHAMS and KAISER/KING family, but If anyone can help me with the 4 points about the ABRAHAMS's and the KAISER's/KING's at the start of this post I would be delighted to hear from you. 3. Dear Debbie Your ISAACS don't seem to be related to my ISAACS, but I would add one more possible place to your thinking - New Zealand. Although not the time of the big NZ gold rushes, people did come out here to make their fortunes. I don't have all may CDs available at the moment, but one on-line source is the "Otago Nominal Index" http://marvin.otago.ac.nz/oni/. This is a collection of names that Dunedin genealogical researchers have collected. It often has interesting information. It lists a "Joseph ISAACS", age "over twenty", occupation " brassfounder" in the 1893 Electoral Roll. There are (of course) numerous Joseph ISAACS around, but if you have a good high speed internet link it might be worth having a search in Papers Past (http://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz) - a collection of (largely searchable) 19th century NZ newspapers. 1. [BRITISH-JEWRY] ISAACS Family from Wolverhampton and Birmingham
    2. Debbie Bozkurt
    3. Dear all I am trying to trace a family of ISAACS from Wolverhampton and the Birmingham area. I will give a brief story of what I have found so far, its quite complicated as each sibling appears to change his name to something different over the years. In 1863 Lewis ISAACS married Louisa NATHAN in Wolverhampton, Louisa were from London originally, I have traced Louisa NATHAN as her mother lived with her in later years an Esther NATHAN, down to Whitechapel living with a family of LEVY'S, nothing else known about Louisa or Esther. In 1871 only Louisa ISAACS is on the census at 42 Great Berry Street, Wolverhampton with her mother and Aunt and 4 children, Catherine (7) (maybe Caroline on Index), Joshua (4), Annie (2) (maybe Hannah) and Solomon (1m). In 1881 she has moved to 21 Marshall Street Birmingham and she has one more child John (7) a total of 5 and is now a widower and employed as a Clothes Dealer. The sibling I am most interested in is Joshua ISAACS born in 1868 Wolverhampton. He disappears off the census after 1881 ( have tried various sites etc.) and the next we know of him is when he marries Dora HARRIS in 1906 Birmingham. On his wedding certificate it says widower but I can not find a marriage for him before that date. Have traced through the couple on the index in London and they are not him, I guess he may have travelled abroad but where to, have tried USA and parts of Australia. He has a son in 1908 called Lewis Leslie ISAACS who official changes his name in to Leslie Lewis HYDE (1940s) and although doesn't appear to follow his faith both Leslie and Joshua his father were buried in a Jewish Synagogue. I am trying to find out what happened to Joshua ISAACS between 1881 and 1906 and did he only have one son and what happened to Leslie Lewis HYDE. Two marriages have been found for Leslie Lewis HYDE in the 40s and 50s and we know when he died but nothing in between. I have tried tracing the siblings of Joshua without much luck, there was a John HINDES with a Kate ISAACS mother (right age and place of birth) with a sister called Louisa, wonder if they mixed the names up on the 1901 census for Wolverhampton, Drapery seller in Markets. I have looked for change of name and can't find anything. I think Solomon may have married a Rebecca in 1895 and have found him in 1901 census but no trace at all of the family after this. They all appear to have disappeared into a vacuum! I can't even trace a Lewis ISAACS backwards as I have no other details for him except he was a Tailor and born in London, will need to send off for marriage certificate but don't hold out much hope. I know its a tall order but does any of this ring a bell as to this family or any other ideas how I can trace them Any help gratefully excepted Regards Debbie Bozkurt in the Outer Hebrides
