    3. Hello Dan There's been a few ideas on here for your ISAAC's but I was wondering, assuming that their fathers were alive in the UK, if they went by anglicised names. Arieh can equate to Louis, Harry, Alfred, Leo etc. Is it definitely Shirga and Pais? If Shraiga that can equate to Chaim. One of my gggf's is Shraiga Faibush, and Faibush can also be a form of Pais/Peysak. You might find Isaaker Ber under Isaac or Benjamin. <David's father was Aryeh Shirga Pais, Catherine's was Issachar Behr Isaacs Dan Henderson, New Orleans> <Lawrence Alfred ISAACS m Florence Gertrude BENJAMIN in 1888 Naomi Ogin, Brisbane> Naomi Ogin Brisbane

As there can't be a burial without a death certificate, I think it might help to check the GRO index for deaths for these two from 1953 to 1959-it's actually only 24 quarters. I once hand-searched from 1944. I found the death in 1983! HTH Sherry Landa (Viersat, France)

    3. re Isaac M Cohen: from encyclopedias of artists I have : Born Ballarat, Australia, 1884; s of Michael Cohen; m 1914, Edith (d 1940), d of Phillip Duke Mighell; died 25 Nov. 1951, lived London at Langton House, 35 Palace Gate, W8 After having completed his studies in Paris, he settled in London where he became a member of the Royal Society of Oil Painters and the Royal Society of Portrait Painters. He was awarded the silver medal at the Salon, Paris in 1924 and the gold in 1932. I am interested because he made the pastel portrait of Dr Israel Abrahams which hangs in the LJS. He also painted the sons of Leonard G Montefiore in 1936. I imagine that Cohen was Jewish. Does anyone know any more biographical details and whether descendants survive? Bryan Diamond London NW8

My email is a bit off as ever thus in France, so forgive me if you get it twice! Best Sherry (Viersat, France) Just a note about next week's WDYTYA on Dervla Kirwan, the Irish actress: "Dervla knows little of her paternal side of the family and meets her father who tells her that her great-grandfather Henry Kahn was Jewish. Knowing nothing of the Dublin Jewish community, Dervla heads to the Jewish Museum. Armed with new information Dervla discovers a Victorian love story, a dismal miscarriage of justice and an act of anti-semitism that even reached the House of Commons - and inspired an episode in one of the greatest novels of the twentieth century, Ulysses by James Joyce." Sounds very interesting - although only for UK licence payers of course! Read more here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00tc6hh Best wishes, Ruth in Brum.

Polly is her real name. I have a certified copy of her birth > certificate. I would like to find a descendant of Jacob and/or Polly. Bob, you don't say what you have tried so far in order to find decendants. Have you checked Free BMD for all variants (don't trust their phonetic search entirely)? Then when you find people i.e. the Polly who married SALKIN in last qtr 1932 have you cross checked against the Jewish Chronicle on line to see if the marriage was announced and can confirm or disprove she was your Polly? I also always cross check with Free BMD to see if there were children and if so what their names were, because if you know the vital dates for Harris and Annie then finding a birth of a Harris or Annie SALKIN with mother SCHNEIDER just after the death of the grandparent would lead me to believe this might be the right family. In this case there is a Brian in 1936, which doesn't help. Jacob gives you way more possibilities. HTH Sherry Landa (Viersat, France)

    2. Hello! I am new to this group; but I recognize names from JewishGen. I am looking for information on my great-grandparents. Hana GRIMBERG was born in Botosani, Romania and married Harris (don't know his real name) MOSCOVITCH They had three daughters: Rebecca, Renee and Brana. The family moved to Whitechapel in the 1914 to 1920 period. I am looking to find where they are buried and any unknown descendants, especially GRIMBERG. we think Harris was born in Russia or the Pale Settlement. Both Hana and Harris passed away between 1953 and 1959. A large gap I know. Mum and family were in Norwich and she recalls visiting them in London at a younger age. I have been looking for years; but not sure where else to look. My recent trip to England was not meant for searching as planned because a relative passed and I ended up sitting shiva. Any thoughts are appreciated. As an additive, Harris MOSKOWITZ is listed as father on both Rebecca and Brana's marriage certificates. Thanks, Jeni Armandez Searching: KELLER (Ireland, England, Germany , Poland and Israel) MOSCOVITCH/GRIMBERG: Rumania and England

    1. [BRITISH-JEWRY] ADMIN: Off Topic & Cross Posting - IMPORTANT
    2. Jackye Sullins
    3. Dear Listers, Just the other day, Sherry (my better half) posted our list of "rules." I don't think some people took the time to read what it said so we are addressing two issues below: 1. Do not post off topic. This is the British Jewry list which encompasses the usual countries such as England, Ireland, Wales, Scotland, Australia, So. Africa. It does not include eastern European countries such as Lithuania or Russia or Poland or the U.S. There are other more relevant lists on which to post those queries. If you seek information about people who lived in the U.K., ask away. However, if they immigrated from somewhere else and you want to know about their shtetl/town of origin or their life before the U.K., this is not the proper forum. 2. Do not cross post. That means that you write the same message to various lists at the same time. Post to one list and if you don't get a satisfactory answer in a few days, post to another list. Our rootsweb robot does not like messages addressed to more than one addressee so it holds it in the queue until either Sherry or I deal with it. This causes more work for us. In addition, those people who belong to multiple lists and receive them in digest format do not like seeing the same message on the same day as they're scrolling through their various digests. Also think about the people who belong to these lists and receive your message individually three or four times in one day and have to delete them. Finally, the whole reason we send Admin. messages out is because they contain information for the smooth running of the list. If people are not prepared to read them and abide by the reminders in them, then our only other course of action is to either moderate or remove people from the list. We don't want to do either one but if people continue to disregard our rules, we will have no choice. Jackye Sullins (Carlsbad, CA) & Sherry Landa (Viersat, France)

    3. I am seeking information on Harris SCHNEIDER and his wife Annie POSNER.  According to the various census reports both of them were born in 1850.  The 1901 census shows them coming from Oaterlanky, Russia.  There is no such place and through other research I have concluded that it should be Ostrolenka (later Ostroleka, Poland) Harris and Annie had once child born in Ostrolenka (Fanny) and 3 children all born in England – my grandfather Isaac 1887; Jacob (1889) and Polly (1893).  Polly is her real name.  I have a certified copy of her birth certificate. I have all the information on Isaac from birth through marriage and death.  I would like to find a descendant of Jacob and/or Polly.  I also have been unable to find any verifiable link for them in Ostrolenka. All help appreciated Bob Moss Chicago, IL, USA Please do not print this e-mail unless there is a real need for a paper copy.
