It means the baby died before it was a year old. In Chicago, lots of babies went unnamed for a short period of time in the early 20th century. Sometimes doctors didn't register them more than once a month and then in groups. It was a common practice to use the father's initial and the mother's first name as a temporary assigned name. My father was named J. Ida & Bernstein. Perhaps the U.K. had a similar practice. See what everyone else thinks, but I think it is just the absence of information. If it was a newborn baby, you could find a birth within a few days. Most of the death listings say how old the baby was. Here's something I found in my family: A baby was born and died, and was listed as H.Ida__. The H was the husband's initial and the Ida the wife's name. I saw the same situation for my aunt's baby who died: A.Miriam__. Is anyone familiar with Nathan WEISBERG aka Nathan WISE? He married Esther H. Kinsler in 1936. Esther is perhaps a daughter of Brucha Kinsler for whom I've been searching for ages now. I know nothing of WEISBERG, only of Kinsler. I have found a record of a daughter born of WISE and Kinsler, named Valerie, born 1938. A search on Bing brings some hits on this name. -- Kindest Regards, Ann Florida USA Don't get your knickers in a knot; it solves nothing and makes you walk funny.
I found a 1946 death record for Bernard A. Barnett but of course I don't know if this is the Bernard Barnett I'm looking for. The death record indicates zero for the age. Its the first record I've seen like that. Does this mean the age was not available or does this mean it was a newborn who died ? -- Kindest Regards, Ann Florida USA

Naomi, Both died in the same year (1901) which gave me a bit of a start. Both are buried in Section B at Plashet Cemetery. Frances (1) Hands - died 22 June 1901 and is buried in Section B, Row 16, Plot 33. Frances (2) Hands - died 20 November 1901 and is buried in Section B, Row 19, Plot 31. Both deaths were written up in the Jewish Chronicle. Frances (1) on 28 June 1901 and Frances (2) on 29 November 1901. Do you have access to the Jewish Chronicle Archive? If not, I am happy to look up the announcements for you. So far I don't have photos of that part of Section B (they only let me into the cemetery about once a month), but I will look when I go tomorrow. Regards, Miriam P. Hi Sheery, and everyone else who has replied to my post. I had already done every search option that I could think of and have just re-run them again following your instructions. Unfortunately, I am not getting any of the 7 "Berlyn" names that I previously obtained from Old Witton (I do have a hard-copy printout so I know that I'm not imagining them!) The spelling variation that appears is 'Berlin' and this is not the same family. I've also tried the soundex search and one covering all England rather than just Birmingham. This gives every similar sounding variant, plus a couple of London Berlyn's that I hadn't come across before, but it would appear that this little batch of 7 records has vanished into the ether - a pity as they were great photos. Any other suggestions? Caroline Berlyn Adelaide, South Australia Go to http://www.jewishgen.org/databases/uk/ use the RH search (JGSGB) then on the results page click to see the results of burials and then on the "view record" link (far right) next to the person and then
Dear All Has anyone come across the Kurland Synagogue that was at 133 Cannon Street Road in the East End of London. It was not recommended for inclusion in the Federation's list of Synagogues as it had no accommodation for women, no fire exit and it was too small. http://www.stgite.org.uk/media/synagogues.html There is also a book that mentions it. I'm trying to work out the time frame for when it was at the address as a SPEILMAN family were living there in 1904. Surname has also shown as SPELMAN, SPIELMANN etc. I've a fair bit of info on them. Thanks Naomi Ogin Brisbane
Hi Bob - In the past I have found photos on the website for the Jewish Museum in London similar to that for which you are looking. The Museum itself re-opened recently after being closed for extensive renovations. Likewise, the website has been upgraded but their "Search" function is still being redeveloped. However, you may find someone at the Museum willing to assist you if you contact them direct. Their website can be found at http://www.jewishmuseum.org.uk/ Regards - June Tuzewski N.T. Australia Does anyone have any photos they would share of the inside of Hampstead Synagogue (Dennington Park Road, London) before its' restoration?
I would suggest that you email the webmaster for the JGSGB site. He should be able to refer you to the person who supplied the original information. Thousands of entries have been corrupted so it will be a while before the site is fixed. Hello Theresa Stewart in Birmingham Read your article in the Newsletter about your grandfather, Israel BAKER, going to the Chicago World Fair. Could you contact me direct. Thanks Naomi Ogin Brisbane
Whilst I appreciate that the JGSGB website has a few problems and sources should be checked (but then they always should be), I think that if you have the image, then you normally would be able to read the English to check that you have the right person, before looking at the Hebrew to know the names and therefore the father's name. Does anyone have any photos they would share of the inside of Hampstead Synagogue (Dennington Park Road, London) before its' restoration? I am particularly looking for one which shows the old bimah in the center of the synagogue Bob Moss Chicago, IL, USA Please consider the environment and do not print this e-mail unless there is a real need for a paper copy.
Hi Naomi According to 1911 census Solomon Woolf was born 1881 and Clara Woolf nee Tushinsky b. 1887. <When was your Solomon Woolf born?> Warm regards Belinda
I would just like to reiterate that the newsletter was superb, I have thoroughly enjoyed reading everyones interesting articles. Perhaps it was, that we were told that this newsletter might not happen that stirred us on to finally finish the article we had started some time before, I know thats how it was for me. Also I must admit that I got very few of the photos correct, I did get the men correct but then that was a 50 50 chance, I is really nice now to be able to put a face to a name when I read a message. I am doubtful that I would have anything to submit for the next newsletter, as so far I only have 1 proven Jewish ancestor, and he is actually my husbands G G Grandfather and because his name is so common I am up against a brick wall, that does not mean I have given up on him. Perhaps now is the time you should write an article for the next edition!! Heather Denholm Western Australia
Hi I am trying to confirm the place of burial of my gg-grandmother, Rebecca Myers (nee Simon - daughter of Rev S. Simon) and husband of Ezra (Israel) Myers. Rebecca Myers' date of birth was 1818 in Coventry, Warwickshire, and her date of death was 20 Feb 1875 in Birmingham. I am not sure if she was buried in either the Old Witton Cemetery or Betholom Row Cemetery. However, I did go to the British Jewry website and found Betholom Row Cemetery, Birmingham listed. Unfortunately it seems there are only 51 graves listed out of about 500. There is a Rebecca Myers listed, but her date od death is 11 years earlier. Could someone please guide me to where else to look, and if possible how to get a photograph of the headstone? Hello Miriam Could you tell me what years they cover and their Hebrew names if you have them. <I have two x Frances Hands in my database of burials in Plashet Miriam Pollak, London> Thanks Naomi Ogin Brisbane
Hello Belinda When was your Solomon Woolf born? I have a Solomon Woolf on my tree born around 1855, died 1929. Kind regards Naomi Barnett Melbourne, Australia <<Solomon Woolf married Clara Tushinsky Dec 1909 Merthyr Tydfil>>
Hi Caroline, Go to http://www.jewishgen.org/databases/uk/ use the RH search (JGSGB) then on the results page click to see the results of burials and then on the "view record" link (far right) next to the person and then click the small image at the bottom and that should take you to the big image and a precise URL you can use as a source. If that doesn't work you MIGHT be able to find the URL you need by editing another one. One of my connections is Aaron Edward LEVINE who was buried with his wife Nellie and they share a stone their image is at http://www.jewishgen.org/jcr-uk/dimages/witton/large/Levine%20Aaron%20&%20Nellie.jpg Hope this helps, let us know.
