    3. I have a book on the Norwich Hebrew Congregation by a relative of mine called Henry Levine. He shows a David Soman joining in 1838 (at the beginning) then Daniel Soman joining in 1853, another David Soman in 1867 and Asher Soman in 1868 David Senior died 24.12.1875 aged 80 and his wife Rosetta 18.6.1877 age 80. Daniel Soman played a role as treasurer in 1852 and then in 1861 and 1862. A Harriet Soman died 25.2.1912 and had four children who died as young children between 1860 and 1876. Hi Jessica, AES appears in the Leeds database. I didn't have his marriage so I will add details, if you want to contact me off list, that would be good. Meanwhile you can find details of his parents and grandparents, on both sides, plus his siblings and aunts and uncles by going to http://www.british-jewry.org.uk/leedsjewry/index.php and entering SOMAN into the search engine. From census information (pls note that 1851 census information for his father, Philip, has been misindexed as 1861-so it looks like there are two 1861 entries) you'll see the father was a printer. Actually, he was proprietor of the Norwich Argus newspaper! http://www.historicaldirectories.org/hd/findbylocation.asp has some stuff. The London Gazette has a lot of entries for SOMAN and Norwich as a search. I haven't time now to look at them all, but I expect you'll find something there. http://www.gazettes-online.co.uk/issues/1841-01-01;1911-02-28/all=Soman+Norwich/start=1 Hope this is what you wanted. Don't forget to email me with AES's marriage details :-) best Sherry (Oxford, UK)

    3. Hi everyone, Does anyone know anything about the SOMAN family from Norwich? A relative of mine was Naomi MITCHEL b.1870 in America - her father was Noah Mitchel, mother Maria (unknown surname). She married Asher Emanuel Soman from Norwich UK. I have a hunch that he had a printing business up there, but also that the family was involved in shoe and boot making in Norwich on a large scale. They are also connected via Asher's mother to the SALKIND family and from his father to Rosetta SALOMAN. If anyone knows anything about these families, I would be most grateful to hear from you. 3. Good morning. I have made a few changes to a couple of the webpages on our website http://www.british-jewry.org.uk You will notice on the home page, that due to a further donation our hosting is now covered until June 2012. Thanks! I have also updated the surname list. There remains a problem with getting the latest version on the pages themselves (anyone who understands php and csv and how the two work together please let me know as I could use some help). However, the xls is the absolutely latest version and following feedback from list members the surnames on this are now all on one sheet, instead of being split over 6 pages. http://www.british-jewry.org.uk/surnames1.html To reiterate how to contact fellow researchers. You send an email to THIS list ([email protected]) FROM your subscribed address in PLAIN text. The subject line needs to say FAO (which means For the Attention Of) and the person's name (so if you wanted me you would say "FAO Sherry Landa") and the surname you want to contact them about (so for me it might read "FAO Sherry Landa re: LANDA surname"). Then in the message you put something along the lines of having seen they are researching that name and either to contact you off-list or giving a bit of information about the actual branch you are researching to see if they are the same as the person who submitted that name to the page. I hope this explains what I mean as there are a few people who seem to be struggling with what I am trying to say. Thanks Sherry Landa (Oxford, UK)

    3. Adoption records would be sealed, but there are agencies who will pass letters on. It's a question of knowing who handled the adoption, isn't it? Are you sure she was adopted and didn't end up with her mother? If you have the father's name and it's not SMITH or JONES or COHEN it would probably worth searching the BMD index, to see if the child was registered under her father's name. This would then give you the mother's maiden name and the registered name of the baby. However, quite possibly she was registered under her mother's name and then you are stuck. We did have someone on the list with extensive experience of tracing adoptive parents/children. If she doesn't contact you in a week or so privately, email me privately and I'll see what I can do-not sure the person I mean is still subscribed to the list. 3. I have added answers in between the questions Can anyone recommend the best people/ methods to research this further? I have written to a few adoption agencies in Wales but have not received any replies yet. Try the Salvation Army. They can find people and will but it will depend on what the person you are looking for wants as to whether they connect you. Were adoptions private in Wales in 1966-1967 All adoptions after 1927 had to be legalised and registered. This wouldn't stop someone giving their child to a relative to bring up, we only have to look at the number of people who discover that their oldest sister is actually their mother. If you can find the birth certificate of the person then it will say on it if the person was adopted officially or not. Ann Macey In Sunny Newport, Gwent, Wales

    3. Dear Genners, I have been asked by a new gen friend to find her half-sister who was born in Cardiff Wales about 1966-1967 to a sixteen-year-old boy and his girlfriend. I have the boy's name but not the girl's name or date of birth of the baby. The inquirer cannot ask her father the details because she thinks he might be too sensitive. Can anyone recommend the best people/ methods to research this further? I have written to a few adoption agencies in Wales but have not received any replies yet. Were adoptions private in Wales in 1966-1967 or would there be court records available? Notices in the newspaper? Hospital records? The inquirer and I are in the United States. We need someone familiar with the Welsh procedures from that period. Barbara Zimmer Virginia

    3. I'm back to my brick wall --locating descendants of Brucha KINSLER nee Frydman. Wrote postal letters, Facebooked, sent messages, emailed, but total disappointment--it appears that I was looking at the wrong descendants which was finally communicated to me. My search begins anew. oy vey iz mir. Brucha KINSLER married Nathan Kinsler in Poland, and they had 5 daughters. The name was originally KINCLER in Poland. They lived in Stamford Hill & were a secretive, private family. Ester B1915-1920 M Mr. ? Levi - had 2 children. (But Ester's info I am unsure about.) Barbara B1915-1920 M ? had 2 children Maya (aka Kitty) - M 1935 died w/her family @ Auschwitz Ada B1917 M1938 Bernard Barnett. New Synagogue. She lived Dunsmure Rd. before marriage. No children Helen B1915-1920 M1936 Alec Levy - had children (possible: I found a Shirley Levy B1940 but then can find no trace after that). Helen appears to be my best bet. - I know for certain that one of the above daughters was also known as ~Annie~who as of 1935 had not married. - I found an Annie (aka Chana Kinsler/Kincler) which led me to the Wrong descendants: Stricker and all of the descendants of Stricker are Not the right family. - The daughters went by both their anglicized given names and their Yiddish names, making my search even more diffcult. - There is a marriage for an Esther H. Kinsler married 1936 Nathan Weisberg (Wise), and a female child Valerie Wise B1938. I've contacted several Valerie Wise in UK via Facebook. Only 1 negative response to date. - Brucha KINSLER B 1880s may have died in 1949; Nathan Kinsler her husband died 1938 or before. Suggestions are most welcome -- Kindest Regards, Ann Florida USA

    3. My family embarked at Libau (Liepaja) Latvia on SS Vologda and arrived at the Poor Jews' Temporary Shelter <chrysalis.its.uct.ac.za/shelter/shelter.htm> on 5 March 1905. With that information I was able to access the manifest of SS Vologda under BT26. This was over 10 years ago, and the files have now been withdrawn from circulation. As Roger Kershaw and Mark Pearsall state in " Immigrants and Aliens. A Guide to Sources on UK Immigration and Citizenship, Public Record Office, 2000 on p. 49 "If you do not know port of arrival /departure or the name of the ship , it will be very difficult and time consuming to find any record. many passenger records are in a fragile condition, and searching them can be very time consuming. There are no indexes of names, and most lists are not alphabetical. The information given varies, but can include age, occupation, and sometimes a proposed address in the UK. There are separate lists for British passengers and alien passengers. the lists are arranged monthly by port of arrival or departure. To use them you need to know at least the approximate date of arrival or departure and the port. These records are in the Map and Large Document Room. " Arrivals, 1878-1960 BT 26 contains the 'Passenger Lists, Inwards', 1878-1888 and 1890-1960, where the voyage began at a point outside Europe and the Mediterranean Sea. NAMES OF PASSENGERS WHO BOARDED THESE SHIPS AT EUROPEAN PORTS AND DISEMBARKED IN THE UK WILL BE INCLUDED. My understanding is that many of the ships embarking passengers at Libau started at other ports, e.g. Riga where cargo such as pit ponies and lumber were loaded and then passengers were loaded at Libau. In any event I am almost certain that access to these lists is now closed. Its possible that Findmypast.co.uk is still processing additional lists that they microfilmed before closing the access. was carefull with my choice of words, stating .." not strictly correct" for the above reasons. 3. Thanks for that information Susan. I have Daniel Morris RUBENSTEIN'S birth certificate. It shows that he was born on 25th February 1883 and that his father was Barnett RUBENSTEIN, a tailor, and his mother was Sophia RUBENSTEIN formerly ABRAHAMS. I wonder whether using the expression 'formerly' rather than just ABRAHAMS meant that she was born STRAUSS and was previously married. I will explore the DANIEL leads, though I thought that I had visited Sheila in 1970, but of course 40 years on and my mind may be playing games on me. I plead ignorance of Ken Gompertz. Does anyone know if anyone is carrying on with his work? At this point I have to say how very grateful I am to the many people who have gone out their way to assist with this quest. Many have written to me off the list. It makes this whole genealogy exercise even more worthwhile. That and the finding more distant relations and connecting with them wherever they now live.
