    3. Ann - Linda may have already suggested this, but you can send a query to the Toronto Family History Centre at [email protected] (or [email protected] - I don't know if it makes a difference). Your question would be posted in a weekly bulletin and replies would be posted in the next one which you can view at: http://www.torugg.org/toronto_family_history_centre_bulletin.html The volunteers are very helpful and often turn up quite a bit of info. 1. Re: [BRITISH-JEWRY] Which databases to use?
    2. Hi bob, I have found both sites to be useful in different ways. Specifically, FMP includes the 1911 census, which A does not. It also has military records that are not on A - I have only one half Jewish ancestry and the other Anglo-Irish, so I don't use it exclusively for the Jewish side. However, A has a large number of family trees on it and various people have contacted me through that to give me information I couldn't have found through normal searches. The National Archives also have things such as naturalisation documents available to search free of charge, but you have to pay to receive documents with the details. Good luck with the search, Naomi in Edinburgh -----Original Message----- From: Bob Moss <[email protected]> To: [email protected] Sent: Fri, 1 Oct 2010 18:34 Subject: [BRITISH-JEWRY] Which databases to use? 3. regarding the subject search for James (Jimmy) LEVY B 1887, D1955 I'd like to thank Linda Kelley who sent me some very valuable info for me to follow up on. James LEVEY was indeed a well known violinist and I can now direct my search towards looking for descendants, possibly in Canada. Thanks Linda...I do so appreciate it. -- Kindest Regards, Ann Florida USA

    1. [BRITISH-JEWRY] James LEVEY - in Canada?
    2. Ann Linder
    3. I am posting this on British SIG also as there is a London connection. In Canada, looking for possible descendants of Mr & Mrs. James Levey. James Levey (1883-1957) was a renowned violinist, born and raised in London. From 1917-1927 he was 1st Violin with the London String Quartet. James Levey taught and also performed with many music groups including the Royal Albert Hall Orchestra, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, & the Hart House String Quartet. He traveled the globe but I’m hypothesizing that he settled in Canada because in 1976, his widow (first name unknown) donated material on his career to the Music Archives of the National Library of Canada. I have found a description of the material on the website and I have emailed the Nat’l Library to determine how I can access/view it. I am interested primarily in his biography and his lineage. I found several references to his stellar career on the internet including a wike search, but no detailed bio. Facebook has some Wengiers but I would like to use other methods first. I would like to find out if James had children so that I can connect with them to determine if photos exist of my great grandmother’s sister Sura. Sura married James' father In London in the early 1900s (was a 2nd marriage for both of them). -- Kindest Regards, Ann Florida USA

    3. Hi Bob, I can't answer your question as I haven't used findmypast much, but I would suggest that you post the information about your brick walls on this list. This will 1) give people a better chance of advising you about whether you might find results on findmypast, and 2) this is an extremely helpful list and chances are someone on it will help you knock down a wall or two. 3. I see that Hilary Thomas has Phillips ancestors, as we do (see email below). We are stumped, and hopefully he, and others, may lend a hand. My wife's GG-Grandfather was David Aaron PHILLIPS. . . . . . he married Catherine ISAACS. I have very little info about both David and Catherine. Would love to find their parents' names, where they were born, and other info about them. David married Catherine 22 June, 1831, at the Great Synagogue in London, two years before their first child, Sophia was born, in Jamaica. So, the two of them probably emigrated from England to Jamaica between 1831 and 1833. He died 4 Aug, 1856, and she died March 26 1875. Both died in Kingston, Jamaica, and are buried there. She is referred to in the Jamaican synagogue records re her children's births as "Kate." Their son, Emanuel, my wife's G-Grandfather, came to Louisiana, US, in 1859. He married Fanny Kreeger and died here in New Orleans. David and Kate's marriage records show that his father's Hebrew name was Aryeh Shirga Pais; her Hebrew name was Keila, and her father's was Issachar Behr. ANY info whatever about David and Kate would be very much appreciated. 3. Oops ! As Jeremy Frankel has gently pointed out I mistyped part of my message yesterday. What I meant to write was: - "Checking on LancashireBMD shows that the brides surname was on the Marriage Register as either, or both, JAFFE or JOFFE." Many apologies. To see for oneself it would be necessary to get a copy from the Manchester Register Office. Asking for a photocopy of the original Register entry, quoting their reference number, 527A/2/26, as noted on the LancashireBMD website at <http://www.lancashirebmd.org.uk/> Again, many apologies. Dear fellow researchers I don't know if it is the power of Israel or just his canny ability to find the impossible, but I have to say how delighted I was when Philip Campbell found a group of relations that I had been searching for, for over some years. I am still not sure how it happened but he eventually found the grandson of a cousin of my father that I had been searching for, for over three years. He found him on Facebook. 3. On Friday I visited Birmingham for a conference at the Hippodrome theatre. Opposite this is a National Trust conservation project of some Victorian shop fronts and back to back houses in courts at the rear. This was in the heart of the old Jewish quarter in the mid 19th century. The back to back houses in Court 15 are arranged by age and the oldest (1840's/1850's) was occupied by Lawrence and Priscilla Levy and their four children Joseph, Adelaide, Morris and Emanuel. It occurred to me that this family could be the ancestors of some of the viewers of this site. Lawrence Levy arrived from London in his fifties (at time of 1851 census) and made hands for clocks. By 1861 he and his family had moved into the Jewellery quarter in Birmingham, where his sons continued the business. The Levy original Birmingham home in the Inge Street Court has a dining room laid out for a Friday Shabbat meal, with various Jewish memorabilia. (They were Polish Jews by the way). If this is your ancestor, I can photocopy the appropriate pages in the guide book for you. To further add to this, I found my own unexpected personal link to this area. During the 1950's one of the shops on the street front now owned by the National Trust was a newsagent run by Manny Gorfunkel. Manny's mother (from Hull/Sheffield) was my maternal grandmother's sister. Manny came from Liverpool where coincidentally he had been in the same class at the Liverpool Institute grammar school as my father. You can find family history in surprising places!
