    1. Re: [BRITISH-JEWRY] SAPERIA AND LIVINGSTONE / LEVINSON
    2. Barbara Zimmer
    3. 1901 census lists Fanny and Julius LIVINGSTONE living with his mother, Celia, age 51 and his sisters, Etty, and Rachel. They are living at 33 Byron Street in Leeds and were all born in Russia. In the 1891 census for Leeds, Julius LEVINSON is listed as the son of Nathan and Lilly, living at 80 St George St. Julius has younger sisters Etta and Rachel. There is no older son named Joseph in the family. (The ages vary widely between the two censuses.) In 1891. Nathan Levinson is a tailor's machinist, as is Julius. In 1910 Julius and **Frances Levinson are living in Chicago and they have a son Nathan, and a daughter May, both born in England. The family came to the US in 1906. And indeed, I could find the entry for Fanny, Mary and Nathan LEVENSON at Boston in 1906. Joe Livingston was born in Leeds in 1892. The 1901 census shows him as the son of Barnet and Janey. So I would assume that Joe and Julius were **not brothers. In the 1901 census, Morris and Etta Etalman are living in Liverpool with their daughter Rosie, born in the US. There is an entry for a Mrs. EDELMAN with two children, entering the UK in June 1901. (I am not sure during which month the 1901 census was taken in Liverpool. ) Barbara Zimmer Virginia Yorkshire BMD: Fanny SAPERIA and Julius LIVINGSTONE married in Leeds in 1901. If Fanny 16-22, she was b. between 1879-1885. There was a Fanny Shapiro, 22, living with Morris and Etta Etalman in Liverpool. Fanny was the sister-in-law of Morris, probably Etta's sister. Etta was 26, b. 1875. They must have married in about 1895. Their daughter, Rosie, was b. in about 1896 in the US. There was a Rosie Edelman b. in New York in 1896. JewishGen lists: Bertha SAPERIA, 22, Dressmaker, of 4 Wintoun St., Leeds, dau. of Solomon, a Gen. Dealer, married Joe LIVINGSTONE, 24, Tailor's Machinist, of 13 Crawford St., son of Barnet, a Gen. Dealer. Julius and Fanny came to Chicago and used their original surname, LEVINSON. They were friends of my grandparents, Harry and Anna WOLFE. I'm wondering if Bertha was Fanny's sister and they married brothers. <snip> I found Fanny SAPERIA's parents: Meyer, the Shoemaker, b. 1848, and Annie W. 37 Cannon St., Leeds. Meyer d. 1894.

    3. Look at www.thejc.com and use the search archives feature which is free. Then when/if you have precise issues have a look at our webpage. Jeff Maynard's website has quite a few extractions, Miriam Pollack's fabulous CD "The JC Project" covers the first decade of 1900 and lots of us have other random pages. The JC is on film at many libraries (which is why it would have been helpful to know where you are. I hope to get Cynthia's list up to view within the next few days. 3. I have a photograph of a relative with the following information printed on the back: Photographed by Salomon Potrait Painter and Sculptor Victoria Studio 39 Lauriston Road South Hackney Late of South Kensington It's a formal studio protrait mounted on cardboard, and from the photo itself I would guess it's 1880's or thereabouts, but that's a guess. I would much appreciate it if anyone has access to a resource that would indicate when that studio was in business, so I can date the photo more accurately. Many thanks in advance. ------------------------- Randall Davis Weston, MA, USA, as the leaves are starting to change

    3. Hi Cynthia, Have a look at http://www.british-jewry.org.uk/jcanouncments.php and see if your format (i.e. what you have transcribed) matches. If you have the same data and it's in an Excel (or compatible) email it to me personally ([email protected]) and I will see if I can add it to the above page-I'm not very good with tables in HTML but I can try! 3. Hi I recently undertook some research at the Christchurch branch of New Zealand Archives for a UK resident. One of the documents I viewed was a copy of the Jewish Chronicle for Friday 28 June 1895, which was used in court to prove the death of an individual. Although the newspaper was fragile I photographed the entire front page: births, deaths, marriages, engagements, thanks, in memorium and notices of tombstone placements. I have transcribed the names in case they are relevant to other researchers. Im not sure if I can upload this to the site, but will try. I am happy to email a photo of the section that relates to their family if anyone would like it. Cheers Cynthia Springtime in New Zealand

Gila also saw that it says Akiva for Jane/Fanny's father. The info on line says Reva, and I had an aunty with that name which made me wonder if it was correct. I still feel the native of section shows place names for both. <someone said the native of says Foreigner?? Judi Conway, USA> Naomi Ogin Brisbane

    3. Bob Moss mentions that he has the death certificates. I wonder if the Registrar's Office or the synagogue office (or cemetery office) might have further details. This is something we often suggest to genners here in America. I can't speak for the UK but I do know that a number of cemetery offices have more information about the family, such as who paid for the grave and matzevah, etc. Good luck, -- Jeremy G Frankel ex Edgware, London, England Berkeley, California, USA EBIN: Russia, New York, USA FRANKEL: Poland, London, England GOLDRATH/GOLD: Praszka, Poland, London, England KOENIGSBERG: Vilkaviskis, Lithuania, London, England, NYC, NY, USA LEVY (later LEADER): Kalisz, Poland, London, England PRINCZ/PRINCE: Krakow, Poland, London, England, NYC, NY, USA
