Dear Naomi, I don't remember if I sent this to you ! Everytime you mention "Leeds" I "run" to this site and search the addresses. There were so many slipper makers and several people with the same name There is no registration of the name LEV on this site. . http://www.jewishgen.org/jcr-uk/leeds.htm All the best, Brenda Habshush, Israel. Thank you for giving us this address, I always look at everything just in case I find an ancestor, and I did. So it is nice to know that my 2xgreat grandfather was still at the address on London Road, Southwark when the book was compiled. We have to take it that because the book was published in 1894 the details were gathered in 1893 so I know he was still there, and still working at that date. Thanks Naomi for your reply. I happen to know - according to records that I have - that Barnet's father was Shmuel, and Jeremy's father was Abraham Yudel N. But thanks for trying. Thanks. I don't think this is what I remember. It might have been just Jewish businesses in Great Britain in about 1890. How do I go about getting one please? Elaine Goldman Bournemouth -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Miriam Pollak Sent: 13 October 2010 20:39 To: British Jewry Mailing List Subject: Re: [BRITISH-JEWRY] Jewish Chronicle 28 June 1895 Dear Ruth, My name is Miriam Pollak (everyone mis-spells the surname). It is a CD-ROM of personal entries from the Jewish Chronicle from 01 January 1900 to 31 December 1909 inclusive. Entries include: Births, Barmitzvahs, Engagements, Marriages, Deaths and In Memoriam. I've also added Tombstone settings to deaths that I could be certain about. I have a couple of CD's left (bear in mind the CD only works in a Windows environment, not Mac) and would be happy to pass them on to interested parties, as my husband and I are about to depart from England where we have been for the last four years. Please contact me directly if you are interested. Dear Listers, There has been quite a demand for these CD's which are currently out of print. I am sorry to say my small cache of CD's is now all gone - I only had five to give away. If there is enough demand, I might consider another print run (only for those who pre-order them this time). Sadly, my husband Fred and I are off back to Australia at the beginning of November. Living in England has been interesting and fun. I'd like to take this opportunity of saying thank you and goodbye to the members of the list who have been in touch directly with me. Regards, Miriam Pollak London working on Plashet cemetery
Brian, I have a Jacob Lewis who moved to Leeds from Russia probably around the late 1800's. He had two brothers I was told, which I'm searching for. I don't know where the Tottenham area is?? My Jacob Lewis was in Leeds and was a taylor. Keep in touch it might be connected. Judi USA
Hello & thanks in advance for any help/insight/direction as I'm new to this exciting project- Trying to find info on the families of my maternal g-grandparents who eventually came to NY fr E. Europe via Leeds. Through the course of their journey the spelling of their surname evolved, eventually becoming "Kaufman" in later US Census'. The family does appear in the 1901 UK Census as the "Koufman" family living @ #47 Black Nile St. (Polti 28, wife Hane 27, children Moses 9, Marie 5, Rachel 3 & Jacob 1); they are all listed as born in Russia (Foreign Subjects), Polti is a "Rag Worker". They lived @ #7 Black Nile St approx 3 yrs, then #1 St Johns Ct. in 1904, then #73 Bridge St in 1908, lastly @ #10 Sheepscar Pl. During the 9 yrs they lived in Leeds they had 4 more children (Jane, Gert, Sarah & Abe/Albert) I have the birth cert of the 3 girls w/addresses. When they leave England via Liverpool the surname chgs, appearing as Kauffman. Polti Kauffman departing in 1908, his wife w/7 chdrn in 1910 (she now appears as Annie on the manifest, Marie is listed as Mary, Rachel is Ro! se.) Also appearing on this journey w/her is a Simon Kauffman believed to be Polti's brother in his early 30's. The 2 other children leave later in 1910; Moses is now shown as Morris traveling w/his brother Jacob. Given the area they lived in while in Leeds, I was wondering if there are records to help me backtrack & find where they were from in E. Europe. I have been told that they were Orthodox, that the matriarch Hane/Annie or even Hannah was fr a wealthy family that included Rabbi's in Leeds at the time.( I can't vouch for this at all) Her maiden name I've seen written as Lev, daughter of "Leib". & later on on her children's death cert. as Lyons. I was hoping that someone might be able to give some direction on this area of Leeds during 1901-1910, if there temple or school records, or anything else that could help me in my quest. Also tryig to find info on Simon/Shimon Kauffman who was in Leeds & traveled w/Hane as the brother of Polti. Simon answers on the manifest as being married when he left Leeds in 1910 but does not travel w/a wife or children. Ultimately I want to find where in the Russ. Empire they were from (all Ships manifest answers given say Seidlce but I have had no luck w/that yet.) I thought it best to try to find as much information about them during their years in Leeds, England. Thanking you all, Trudi Bayes Miami, Fl.
Hello: I'm researching a woman who was born Hannah Goldman in the Tottenham area. Her father was Jack Goldman, and she was probably born 1920-1930, thats just a guess. She later married a man named Mr. Lewis. If anyone has information on this woman I would love to hear from you. Thank you. Brian

FYI (although I am sure some of you know). Enjoy! Sherry Landa (Oxford, UK) Today a new online BMD site in partnership with the Cumbria County Council Registration Service was launched. The new site CumbriaBMD is based on the well-proven software which already supports CheshireBMD, LancashireBMD and seven other county-based sites. The initial data load consists of 418,648 records which provide indexes to the Barrow-in-Furness District registers for: Births 1837-2009 Deaths 1837-2006 Marriages 1837-1900 It is expected that the coverage of marriages will be extended to 2009 within the next few days. Indexes for other districts will be added as these become available. CumbriaBMD can be accessed: Direct at www.cumbriabmd.org.uk Via www.ukbmd.org.uk (which also has links to the other county BMD sites)
